Everyone has their own way of pushing themselves. Once you find yours, you will be set to go.

I love seminars. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to go to one for a long time.

I like long katas. They force you to try to sustain a high level of power and speed in your technique over a long period of time. They make you push yourself.

There are a lot of comments about the effectiveness of jump kicks. You can gain a lot power through the momentum of these kicks. They can be useful in sparring, depending on the style of sparring that you do. Are they effective on the streets? I think not likely, but someone else may have used one with success in the streets. My question is this: Do you like to do them, if not just for fun? I like them because they are challenging and provide a good workout.

You can still blast your techniques, but you will have to watch how close you come to making contact, if that is what you mean. MizuRyu is right on key. There are no bad martial arts, just bad instructors. Another thing is that the focus of the school (self-defense or sport oriented) is also based on the instructor's philosophies. The best thing to do is to go watch classes in your area, talk to the instructors/owners, and then make your decision. This is the best way to find what you are looking for.

This is a valid point, I think. Many times, especially with high ranked master instructors, they want to save face, instead of admitting that they don't know. They should not teach what they don't know, and then go and look up answers to the stuff they don't know.

I think that training with mixed ranks is beneficial, but I also feel that beginner/intermediate/advanced/black belts should also get the opportunity to train with people of only their rank, in order to better focus on things more specific to each level.

Yeah, that sounds about right. Also, the winning side would loot the field, taking all of the equipment left behind.
