I chose other, and the reason is this: the most important thing you need to be an instructor is the ability to teach. All the skill in the world won't help you to transfer that knowledge to others. Experience is what will count the most, and that only comes with time and trying.

5-9-07 Taught Orientation from 5:30 - 6:00, focusing on round kicks, especially the chamber and the base foot rotation. I did my little forms routine again today as well, doing a low rank form, and then 2 advanced forms, followed by the low rank one-steps. I did it 3 times, for a total of 9 forms, and then the one-steps. -
Building the muscles around the bones you want to use will help, with both your knees and the forearms. Also, using the makiwara for your forearms is ok, just use it in moderation. After extensive time in training, they will begin to toughen. Thai fighters don't get tough overnight. Years of pounding the heavy bags and competition and sparring all help in the conditioning process. It just takes time. If you try to hurry things along, then you will only bring on injuries and set-backs.

Do you know what the best thing about solo training is? You can do whatever you want! No teacher telling you what you have to do, no strict class regimen to follow. Just pick something, work on it, and have fun while you do it! Your skills will not deteriorate in 2 weeks time, so don't stress too much about that, either. As the others have said, enjoy your vacation! Besides, the break may be what your body needs, even if you don't think it needs it.

That has been my experience, obiwansbane, but in his video, the judges are seated. They ain't moving too much...that is the way I have seen it at some tournaments I have been to as well. If I ever run a ring, I will move the chairs away, and tell my judges to get up and move around a little.

Chess Boxing?

That is true. Just think, you box for 2 minutes, then you have to sit down, calm yourself, and try to beat the guy at chess in the next few minutes. All the while you try to move the pieces, your hands are shaking away. Lennox Lewis expressed interest in the sport, and he is an avid chess player as well. -
I get to feeling like I am the only guy browsing around here that doesn't do a version of Bassai Dai. I feel sad...

Aikido vs. Kickboxing?

The problem with the Aikido techniques they demonstrate against defenses is that they are only against one attack. Drives me crazy! That just isn't how it is going to happen on the street. Especially the 'spinning kick.' I don't many who just walk up to a fight and throw a spinning heel kick. I didn't notice any MMA in those vids, either. -

I used to think this way as well. However, my knees at this point tell me otherwise. I still think I am young, but the fact of the matter is that some people's bodies wear down after a while. That is really what it comes down to. You want an instructor who knows what your body is capable of, and then be able to push you from there, at a safe level. Your body will wear down, but like a good classic car, if cared for it just gets better with age. Yeah, but even a classic car needs an overhaul once in a while! -

I would have to agree with you here. The dojo/dojang atmosphere just gets me in the mood to work out, and I know that I am there to train, along with everyone else. Distractions are minimal, and it is easy to focus. -

Hehe, no, I don't have stripes on the pants. Good thing, too. About the only kicking I can do in these things with the duty belt on is front snap kick or a push kick. Maybe a low round kick, but that is it. -

The thing about a street fight, though, is that you don't get the time to set them up, wear down their legs, and then dance around them until you knock them out. Street fights are often fast, brutal, and very quick. Your strategy would have to be a lot different than it would be in the ring. -
That is sweet. Once again, I am jealous! Another note that I would add is that when the adrenaline dumps in self defense situations, you would be surprised how fast your muscles become more supple. These are all great ways of stretching on your own, and using stationary objects to add resistance is a good idea. As far as doing the partner stretching (PNF stretches, preferably), you will only want to do these a few times a week. Therefore, only doing them on your class nights would probably work out just right for you.

Well put, ps1. I would have to agree with ps1 and DWx. Just keep doing what you can, while you can. Try to find ways to apply what you do in baseball to your grappling, and vise versa, as far as movement, actions, etc. It may seem silly at first, but it will stimulate you to think about both, and who knows what you might come up with.

Look into protein drinks/shakes. Also, consider eating 5 to 6 smaller meals per day. The higher range weight training with fewer reps should help to gain muscle, which is the weight that you want to gain. I can't offer a lot of help, because I am not a personal trainer. Here are my stats: Height: 5'8" Weight: 235 Build: Short and stocky. So, I envy your inability to gain weight, and to weigh 127 pounds. -

Well, at this point I don't carry anything of mine off-duty. I don't carry a gun as of yet, because I don't own one, and have not qualified yet. The department won't supply one right now, because I work in the jail at this time.
