  1. Welcome to KF, Tom. Although I would not call myself an ITF stylist, I do currently use forms from the ITF form set (I mean my organization does). Look forward to seeing you on the forums.
  2. Welcome aboard, Frank!
  3. Swimming would be good, as it is lower impact but high resistance. But, check with your doctor to see if you should start doing anything yet.
  4. I think part of the problem is the near elimination of physical education in the school systems. If it is there, it is a class for underclassmen, or it is relegated to one semester per year. Physical activity is shyed away from, and there are those who just flat don't want to do it. I think another problem is that teachers are shying away with putting kids in positions to challenge each other in physical skills. They want to eliminate the concepts of winning and losing for fear of making someone feel bad. This needs to be embraced in a way that even though the loser loses, they can still be analyzed and talked to in ways that they have improved, and what they can do to improve further. Everyone also needs to understand on their own and accept the fact that not everyone will be a professional level elite athlete. But, everyone can be athletic to a point, and can get into basic decent shape.
  5. 8-30-10 Weights: push day: bench, decline bench, and incline dumbell bench. 9-1-10 Weights: pull day: pull-downs, seated rows, leg press.
  6. The only thing I would be worried about as a father/son student/teacher pair is that kids tend to get burned out by their parents more quickly than they would with a seperate instructor. Parents can tend to want to push their kids harder than others would, perhaps expect more, and perhaps make them practice/participate more than the regular class would. That is something to keep in mind when teaching your own. You don't want to drive them to the point that they no longer enjoy what they are doing. That is when they will shut down.
  7. I will have to try to do it, and then record it and post in on FB or something. I'll see if I can arrange that. I'll warn you, though...I think I look terrible.
  8. I agree. There is no proof that leads an MA to being more effective because of how old it is. BJJ is another example...its younger than TKD, with roots in JJJ and Judo. And aruging with the effectiveness of BJJ is tough as well. Older does not guarantee better. It just guarantees its older.
  9. I need to check my set, but I have always done it as a slow motion. Maybe it is just an oversight in your edition?
  10. I'm not denying that. I just thought the OP should be aware of the issue. There can be very strong reactions to this topic and that it can easily lead to flame wars should he ask on another forum. sorry if i have caused any offence by asking this question No offense is taken here. We are pretty good about keeping away the flame wars.
  11. I second this notion. Also, the books I have read of the "Best Karate" series have been quite good. I hear Kyohan is quite a good book, too. Funakoshi also produced a book second to Kyohan, called "Karate-do Nuyman." It might be worth checking out as well.
  12. Tony: one way that I have taught and practiced the elbow strike, especially when teaching it for breaking, is to start in a back stance, and shift into a front stance as the elbow strikes the bag/board. This is great for teaching the hip rotation and getting that power.
  13. Thanks for linking to my article, ps1. I agree with you here. More time in partner drills will lead to increases in sparring ability and with self-defense skills, if these drills are focused in these areas.
  14. Very cool. On a side note, I didn't see that many of those kids were much more impressive than putting together that many American kids.
  15. Boy Tony, you said a mouthful there. Sparring can appear so intricate when you really start to elaborate on it like that.
  16. I think it is great to teach your sons like this. My dad taught me and my brothers like this for a short time, and I loved it. Now, as for finding a place for your son to spar, I think you can find a place, but you need to approach the situation delicately, and respectfully, and make sure that your son knows, understands, and abides by all the rules of the dojo you go to spar too. I'm sure you already know this, but it is something to keep in mind. You already mentioned that there are no quality schools in your area, in your opinion, and should keep this in mind when you take your son to places. It might not be something you want your son to mention at the class when asked why he doesn't just sign up there (kids say the darndest things! ). All in all, your not in an insurmountable position. I remember when one of my ATA instructors knew some guys from other styles, and after one of the classes during the week, those guys would come in, and have some friendly sparring sessions using different rules and stuff. So it can be done. Its just finding the right people to do it with.
  17. The Rays are going to make it close in that division. I am keeping an ear to the White Sox/Twins, the Phillies/Braves, and the Cardinals/Reds races. They are all close, and could go down to the last week of the season, for sure. My Royals are down and out, but they have shown some sparks, and I think Ned Yost can get them headed in the right direction as long as management doesn't keep giving away the talent. Alex Gordon had been looking pretty good since coming back, and hopefully they can keep building. I would also like to see Pujols win the triple-crown this year.
  18. Chiefs play tonight. Hopefully I get to see the light at the end of the tunnel....
  19. Welcome, Jones. I live in Hays, so we are in the same neck of the woods! Hope you enjoy it here.
  20. Hello there! Are you back for a while?
  21. You might try to roll your hip around before trying to stretch. As for why it catches and pops, I would consider talking to a specialist that might be able to answer why.
  22. Sorry to hear about this. I hope you can get it back together soon. You can always work on one-arm push-ups. That would be impressive to do.
  23. This week went to hell in a handbasket really quick. Only got two days of training in. 8/24/10 Weights: pull day: back, doing assisted pull-ups, seated rows, and upright rows. Also did some leg extensions and curls, and my hams are still sore from the curls. Got some jump rope in, too, doing 4 sets of 50 jumps.
  24. It looked like in the video he shifted his weight a bit to get the kick off. I think I end up pulling the kicking foot into the knee, but I don't recall. The way we do the form looks SO much different than his video, though. I will be honest, though: I hate this form.
