He is right and so are you.

that is an awkward question for me to answer because I don't know why I started training. I started when I was thirteen and am now fourteen. I have a fifth kyu in shotokan. I do have a theroy on why I might have joined though, but it isn't a very good reason. I wanted to excel in something and try something new not only that in a sense I also wanted power. not too be creepy or anything of course.

Yup that is right, and that is why I plan on taking a grappling art as well once I get to a good enough level. I can't say I completely agree with you though because the whole grappler and versus striker thing is true, full contact martial arts tournaments aren't realistic really many vital areas are not aloud to be hit, which I think gives grapplers a little bit of an edge in stuff like the U.F.C. and what not. All areas except the eyes were valid in the early UFCs when pure grapplers were defeating pure strikers left, right and centre. Have you seen UFCs 1 - 10? Early Vale Tudo? Actually I was younger when the beginning ones were out and had no incline to watch it. and I actually just started watching it this year so sorry I did not know that the rules had changed, I will try next time to research what I say before I say it. sorry about that and I hope you didn't take it offensive, I also said though that while grapplers having an advantage over strikers was true that the rules that were more recently placed may have made it more apparent.

Well she isn't terrible about it and pokes fun at it out of no where but if I'm talking about it with my friend who does another karate she will definately put her two bits in or roll her eyes or when me and her talk about judo she will talk about how great it is, but if I ever say anything about shotokan she will attack (though not in a way to make me feel bad about myself) Or if I were to say something about the importance of both striking, and throws and grappling she'll get on my case.

I totally know what you mean I've been seeing lots of karate teachers show and teach flashey moves, that are completely inaffective. My teacher says a head level round house kick looks really pretty but a knee level one would actually work. Your are really smart, I'd say you understand karate almost to the level of an expert. Oh and I have decided that because judo people are able to apply what they know to combat quickly I must work extra hard so no matter what they could not beat me, that will now be one of my goals that sit beside my others like equaling and then surpassing Corrie at form, john at power and connection, my rival in in kamloops in everything he does and then possibly try to be good enough so I can beat my instructor at everything he can do amazingly well.

I am currently taking shotokan karate, and I was wonderiing what everyones thought was on this style, and karate in general. I know I have posted something similar to this in the karate section (and now believe it or not on the korean arts by accident, sorry to the people who have to deal woth that I am sorry), but I thought here would be a better place to put it. My question is, meant with no disrespect, do you beleive that judo practitioners are most likely going to beat a shotokan practitioner in a real life situation, not only that but also more realistic? My belief is that a martial art is only as good as the practitioner can make it by applying it appropriately yo combat and have a good instructor. So basically what I mean is that I do not beleive in a superior style, it is my friend who does and I wanted to hear others thoughts on it.

I have no video titles to offer but there are wuite a few good shotokan books out there that will help you along in your training. welcome to the world of shotokan karate.

Quentin, and Uma are both very amazing. For me both movie are at a tie because they both have their good and bad points -
No don't worry you weren't rambling, and if you were it was helpful rambling. thanks

this is a good plan, but we do judo and karate at the exact same time and at opposite ends of town. I will still try and bribe her though I have always wanted to try judo or aikido, or jujutsu

I agree, but she can be ignorant that way. I wasn't bashing anything, and I didn't curse. She doesn't know of this site so she won't put any rude things on here. No, I meant me. I didn't want to curse on KF (I hate bashers). From your post, I thought that's what she was doing (bashing). Sorry, it was late when I posted that. Anyways, yes, some people are ignorant. And the sad thing is, you can't change them. So don't let it get to ya. Just train hard oh hahhahaa sorry about that. I promise you I will train hard. I have a friend who does tang soo do, what is it like?

thanks for the kind words, I beleive you are correct.

very well said, I especially liked the part where you said there is no one dominate style because it is completely true.

Who else here really enjoyed Kill Bill and Why?
-
I agree with you also, that is why I want to try out judo,so I can be not just good at stricking but grappling too. Our karate group does throws and some grappling so whenI do try it out at least I will have some knowledge of it already.

WOW in one month, very good, I must say I am proud even though I hjave no clue who you are

I have a friend who is in judo and is constantly saying how much more effective it is than shotokan and how unrealistic shotokan is. I think she only says this because of lack of knowledge, but it bugs me. What should I say or do? I know that judo is effective. Do all judo practitioners believe karate is a joke? I'm not saying this to be rude or disrespectful, I just want to know because I only know a little bit about judo. I know not all think that about karate because that would be just ignorant, but does a large portion of them think this? What can I say to open her eyes that shotokan can be effective so long as the student and teacher are good? p.s. I think judo is great and may one day try it out so I am not flaming it.

Shotokan's Secret: The Hidden Truth Behind Karate's Fighting

The part about useing pure muscle is I think innacurate we get our power with conection and weight and being less tense. -
I'm currently 1st kyu. wow your miles ahead of me, hopefully I will reach that level soon. how many times have you done Bassai? I just started kearning it and I find it to be a really different nice kata, but also very difficult. Ummm wow....how many times?.... I'd say ALOT, I dont count but it would be ALOT of times. I do Bassai 10 times a night minimum, slowly working out small stuff now. Then another 5 minimum, going full force. Yea Bassai I find requires a strong amount of stance work to look even half decent. I've been keeping a log of how many times I have done bassai, but so far I haven't done too many. I completely agree Bassai really requires a strong amount of stance and a willingness to work hard at it.
-
yeah mine do too, but it always feels like I'm doing bad even after they help but I'm sure it will pass. You seem to have a lot of your future in karate planned out, which isn't a bad thing at all I am currently fourteen, I've been studying a little bit over a year now and am at fifth kyu, I hope to be a black belt as soon as I am able to be ready for that.

What style of karate was it that you studied?
