  1. Keep in mind that you're going to be only against people of similar rank and experience - and they are all probably going through the same thing you are at the moment! Just try to relax - I always find meditation helps - just to clear your mind before you compete. Try not to pay attention to what's going on around you, as tournaments can get crowded and pretty noisy. Just relax, stay focused - and have fun! Even if you don't place (I never placed in a tournament until I was a brown belt) it's still a great learning experience. Thanks, great advice. I hope they don't allow photography I hate flashes.
  2. Thank you very much, I am so glad to hear my training is coming in useful. I feel unready for the tournament though any tips?
  3. Thank you very much, I am sooo incredably nervous for this tournament there is going to be so many people watching. Any tips?
  4. Pretty much anything I can. What do you mean silat is some nasty stuff? and what type of stuff does it stress if you know.
  5. Well I have my first real bug tournament coming up and I'm really nervous and I don't thik I'm ready for it, but I think it'll be a fun challenge. This week has been giving me a little more confidence though. First off I was playing flag football in school, and I got two touchdowns, and it was becuase I was able to block everyones hand away from my flags, honestly I ran th whole feild and I had two people on me at the same time at one point, I really think it was becuase of shotokan that I could block everyones hands, and I know it's not really thay amazing becuase you know where there hands are going to go but it still felt good. Then me and my brother were playing teather ball and I was able to win which made me hyappy becuase not only was I able to stop the ball but when I hit it, it went with lots of force. Do you think it was shotokan that actually helped me or do you think I'm just saying this becuase I'm in it and want to belive that it is the reason? P.S. I am not trying to sound cocky, and I do not even think I am at a good enough level to defend myself against an attacker at least a that well, I was just happy to see improvement.
  6. I like the roudhouse we do in karate, but that's becuase at our dojo we do it like the thai one, I think my favorite is front thrust kick though which I think is the same as front push kick
  7. I'm happy with the teacher I have but I think it'd be amazing to train with gichin funakoshi or tsutomu oshima
  8. I dunno I suppose the MA world seemed more homophobic than I thought, and Oshima being born 76 (I think) years ago might not approve.
  9. I don't know much about the Indonesian martial arts I have only ever heard of silat I have no clue what it's all about. Could somone tell me about silat and any other martialarts that are their. Thanks
  10. I was always afraid once my sensei or fellow students or even oshima himself found out I would be like banned or hated, most of you make it seem as though I have nothing to worry about
  11. I'm a bisexual myself actually, and no one in my shotokan classes know becuase where we train is not to dicuss sexual prefrences, but to train. I don't imagine anyone would care all that much, and if they did they probably wouldn't show it.
  12. Hey I 'm from canada too, but I'm a ways away from Quebec. I study shotokan as well, are you a member of SKA?
  13. Very good post .shotokan basics prepares and developes the body very well .A good shotokan club has a well balanced training rota ,catering for basics ,kata ,self defence and competition style kumite . Thanks, I completely agree, I love being agreed with it makes me feel less incompetant.
  14. Well my sensei started with judo at first when he was young and then at I think it was 12 started taking shotokan his focus was and is more on shotokan but he knows judo pretty well and therefore is a really well rounded fighter at least in my mind. I think you should start with whatever you feel is best choose either a stiriking or grappling art first and let that be your focus then take another on the side.
  15. Can anyone give me some good japanese internal arts, and explain what it is?
