White Belt

White Belt (1/10)

  1. You're mistaken to think that the pattern was performed to music, it is actually not. If you notice the music continues nonstop throughout the whole video... The ITF uses sine wave as a way to generate more power and to relax the body as you go from technique to technique. What you see in the video is a very emphasized sine wave, along with other stuff, since it's at a world competition...
  2. There are many different circumstances to accepting a student's previous rank. If the style was completely different than I would say, start over because I wouldn't even know the basics. If the style was similar, then the student should be reevaluated to a rank that suits their skill. This was what happened to myself, and I agree with what my instructor did. I caught on quickly, and relearned everything including all patterns, knowledge, self defense... of the ranks beneath, in time to test for the next rank as if I had gone to the school from the start. For a black belt, if they are to keep their rank I would assume that they would know that they have to train hard consistently in order to catch up and understand the new style. Besides, if they join a new style, I assume they are interested in learning and want to train, and with past experience they would be able to catch on easier. In some cases, this might be true, in other cases it's not. And it's quite a shame, not only for the instructor, but the other students who feel pride in their school when someone stops in to watch the class and they notice a "black belt" with skill that would make people wonder what the standard is.
  3. My school has, that I know of, two high school dating couples that hooked up recently within the past couple of months. The two guys are both assistant instructors who will be testing for their black belts this june. And the girls are both two belt levels behind their bfs. One couple is more expressive with lots of PDA before and after class... Hopefully they won't break up, we don't think that far ahead.
  4. Sine wave is supposed to work with the natural motions that the body does, but puts a little bit more emphasis into it. It's a little bit confusing for myself, sometimes I get it, sometimes I don't... If you want to see a picture of a diagram that Master Wheatley drew of the different types of motion, I will post the link, otherwise I won't.
  5. I'm 5'2" and it's not all about height. Granted some things are easier to reach when you're higher, but you also have to have the balance and coordination to really be effective. There's a really tall guy at my school, who I believe almost has to duck to get through the door (or maybe he does), but his coordination and balance is terrible. He complains when the targets are high, but they're really on chest high on him, when they're over head height for all of the other non complaining students and myself, who just try and mostly make it. And then there's another kind of tall guy, but not as tall as the other, who is pretty good and utilizes his height effectively combined with his great jumping techniques, so in my opinion, it's really all about how coordinated you are and how much you work at it.
  6. Since right now you are learning the lower rank patterns, you should notice that whatever you do on the left side, you usually do on the right side. Same also goes for going foward and then back to the starting position, except most of the time it's a different technique, but the same number, until you get to the higher rank patterns. And the way that you turn should be the direction that you're going in. For instance, in the beginning of the pattern you're moving foward so you first do low block on the left, then step foward punch, then turn so that your body faces foward and then continue on until you face the right and repeat. Also, usually if the first technique is a block, the the left foot is foward. if it's an attacking technique, right foot foward. Patterns usually start with a block. Saju jirugi and saju makgi are actually fundamental exercises. But mainly, the most important thing is practice. And make sure you practice the pattern properly (with power, correct stances, breath control... otherwise the practice is useless) all the time, and it will become engrained in your mind very soon.
  7. we have parties for all the students and their familiest to come to. There's one around Christmas time in the dojang, which is mainly for the students. Certain students are awarded for their dedication or attendance. The other one is near the end of summer at a park where the whole family can come out and eat bbq. All of the students as well as their siblings can participate in the games that we have. It's a lot of fun, especially with the jump house and water balloons... ;]
  8. for itf it's 1st - 3rd novice : Boo Sa-Bum 4th - 6th expert : Sa-Bum 7th - 8th master : Sa-Hyung 9th grand master : Sa-Sung i think that's the phonetic spelling though...
  9. all the way if split is one foot front, one foot back. if both feet to the sides, then an inch or two depending on how i feel..
