  1. LOL! ...wax on wax off!
  2. Morgray, could you elaborate for those of us who do not have that book?
  3. Thanks all! Yes, currently I am taking olympic style TKD but have been training in MA since high school around 76'. ...jeez, am I that old??? Oh well, I don't look it or feel it!
  4. Powell's.com has several books on navy seal training and combat.

  6. I love all the basic kicks (flying kicks are for movies and drunk opponents) Right now I'm partial to the rear leg fake leg sweep that "s" curves into a hook kick very hard to see coming! The opponent usually is only concerned with defending his/her legs.
  7. I think of forms as a kind of moving meditation. It takes a certain amount of discipline. When done correctly, it builds the neural pathways you need for the effortless execution of techniques. Think of it as practicing musical scales. A football player does not have to run through automobile tires in an actual game, but when he has to fake an opponent out with fancy footwork, he has the skills. The reason kata is still around is mainly to hone technique. To get any benefit out of it you must apply yourself. in boxing they teach footwork and hand combination drills. This is a form of kata. Each sport has a series of exercises. This is all kata. If the forms you are learning in your current martial art don't seem to have any practical use then you might want to study something else. Just keep in mind that no one art has all the answers. Awareness comes from within.
  8. I have seen some of the students that are the product of the Dacascos school and they are badass (in my humble opinion) Good luck!
  9. I studied a small amount of kung fu in my early years which was interrupted by my Jeet Kune Do phase which arrested any thoughts I may have had about studying any traditional styles. My son became interested in Tae Kwon Do and started taking lessons recently and as a result gave me a renewed interest in martial arts and now I am studying Olympic style TaeKwonDo at US West Coast school.
  10. I have met Al Dacascos and he is very personable. He had two schools here in Portland, OR But one of them has closed or moved. You can email him directly at:sifual@aol.com.
  11. I find it sad that these two kids who sued have learned little about respecting their sport. To some people, martial arts are nothing more than selfish vehicles to run people over with. I think it's just sad. I would suspect their parents had a bit to do with the whole lawsuit thing. On a side note, people of all religions should strive to find that which is common among us and avoid that which seperates us. WWJD ...indeed.
  12. edgy? What do they mean EDGY!...oops...."courtesy....self control....Heh heh.
  13. The purpose of martial arts varies with the frailties of each respective martial artist. When you mix combat techniques, philosophy and humans with agendas, well you get the idea. My personal goal is to minimize the jealosy factor and learn from others as much as possible
  14. I like to wait till they try to draw you in by fake-stepping forward and as soon as their weight is moving forward, bam! spinning back kick! But I guess my all time favorite is when your opponent is lying crippled on the ground after a particularly brutal skipping side kick, that's when you jump six feet in the air and (with both feet) stomp down with a monkey scream while your face grimmaces in slow motion. That last one is only to be used on Han's henchmen.
  15. Duh, I totally avoided the original question... Wing-Chun...
  16. I started in Judo-Aikido when I was very young and went on to take private instruction from Kung fu, karate and TKD instructors then I became one of those Jeet-kune-do fanatics, sparring at every backyard barbecue that I could get my martial arts buddies to come to. I've just recently started taking TKD again to get back into shape. (Cause I'm getting old) Heh..
  17. Respecting fellow martial artists is academic.
  18. I'm new here although I've been into the martial arts since 1976. You seem like a cool bunch. I think I could hang here (with your permission)...
  19. Oh, I'm new here so hello everyone. _________________ "you can't hurt them with your Chinese Boxing!" [ This Message was edited by: Ti-Kwon-Leap on 2002-04-21 02:38 ]
