I wanted to know if anyone could feel my pain... At my first karate school (wado-ryu) There was a Sempi there named Zach. He could only come once a month and I wondered why. It turns out that he was the unarmed combat drill seargent at the infamous Paris Island Marine Training Camp. He was the hardest teacher I EVER met. He loved what he called the "twelve step ladder", the ladder is when you (without stopping) do one pushup, then two, then three, then four, then five, then six, then seven, eight, nine, and on up.. ann with no break BACK DOWN. The worst part was, when the pushups werent machine perfect... he put his foot on your back and made them three times as hard. And sparring was r... you can guess... look at what his job is. But overall his training helped me in the long run Anyone else had hard teachers?

I have got to say though, be careful. I live in Georgia, but am only a few miles from South Carolina (where you are from) and if you pulled out nunchakus or throwing knives and used them, you are going to jail--even if it is self-defense. There are legit self defense items, such as pepper spray, a registered hand gun, a walking stick/cane, and some tactical knives, but none of the things that you are carrying. Please be careful. I hate to say it, but only people looking for trouble carry things like nunchuks. Don't be one of those people. AoG Ive done my homework

I was one of the only students he had, sometimes my family helped himm with money... we were extreemly good friends. I think that a person can and should do what they want. I just think that MAists should have the intellegence not to TAKE IT TOO FAR. I agree with just about everything stated before this. Good Points.

I personally think that a martial artists should from training gain the dicipline and over all common sense not to do things such as drink, smoke ect... I myself usually (though I know im not to judge a book by its cover) get a generally bad outlook on people who I know drink or smoke. Because I simply take into factor that most people who smoke and drink are idiots. Of course there are exceptions, but too many people in my family have died because of these things for me to see any logical reaso to use them. I just dont understand it. So I want to know whether or not you think a martial artists should have the dicipline and intellegence required not to do these things.

I had to ask to see if they were legal where I live and now I carry them everywhere.

Wrestling and BJJ
Grimslade replied to MFGQ's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
I believe that generally nearly no style was based around the assumption that the user would engage in combat with a multitude of opponents. I Think that this is wrong, if a style of fighting is geared on self defense multiple opponents is required to be covered in training. End of story. But... I think judo is better for self defense -
Wrestling and BJJ
Grimslade replied to MFGQ's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
In my opinion BJJ is one of the best styles for self defense ONLY IF there is only one opponent. This is partial to my decision to partake in the training of MMA. But on the side, I think BJJ is more effective, I have seen it on many occasions. -
I have a friend that likes to give people nicknames... his for me is Sputnik, my brothers is Burlap, my cousins is numbnuts, my other cousin in Mr.pumpernickle, and he calls himself The Mongoose. I would say the others... but that would be inapropriate for this forum.
