  1. um, well, yes you made a point (albeit one that is flawed) but i should point out that it ends up implying that the styles that you mention (bjj+muay thai) are the ak-47s where-as everything else is a 9mm. is that your point?
  2. But most who read Potter go on and read other books as well well, i think this is where my cynical mind shows up. i'm not entirely convinced that the kids who read harry poter will read other things. i mean, well, i'm not really sure if its the reading that they are interested in or if its just the harry potter 'craze/fad'. after all, when all of your little friends are talking about harry potter, it doesn't 'help' if you mention another book.... maybe i should have more faith in the youth of today.
  3. oi! this is MY thread. no laughing! at least help us out here.... i'm confused now....
  4. during forms training we try to do the in nose/out mouth and in time. but during actual sparring and the drills, we try to breathe as natural as possible. we don't hold breaths or draw out breaths or breathe with the out motion or whatever (at least not in a fixed way). we just breathe. make sense?
  5. hmm, interesting... what did you do in your first lesson? i'm always interested in everyone's first wing chun lesson.
  6. his best role? 'executive decision'. maybe cos he dies.....
  7. should it be 'karate and i? the title is refering to two separate items; it is refering to 'me' and 'karate'. they are subject and no verb is being applied or implied. it isn't 'karate and i something something...' it is just about karate and me.
  8. but the advantages themselves do have the same implications+consequences in any way similar to those with the examples of the guns. if you mentioned two guns of the same 'type', let's just say revolver vs semi-auto, i would feel that is a better type of comparison. the problem i have with the 9mm vs ak-47 is that one is in more ways than one, better then the other at doing it's job. a person holding an ak-47 is more likely to kill someone, no matter how much or how little skill they have, than one holding a m92f (for a start, an ak can do everything the 9mm can AND more). as it has been discussed before, the stand-up vs ground-fighting thing is much more complex and open to debate than this.
  9. ooooh la la la! the magical mystery tour. the magical mystery tour, is coming to take you away..... to take you away to take you todaaaaay.
  10. well, if you do come, it's be a shame for you not to try out the class as well.
  11. could just be cos he's at that age where he feels like he has defend everything and see everything as a battle.... y'know, i don't see what difference it makes whether or not he is.
  12. ...right now any job will do.... hehe, just realised taht by mentioning the ticky donovan class, i've kinda given away to people in the know, what town i live in! pah, come and get me you wimps!
  13. why is he so keen to prove he is thai? you know what shakespeare says (in not these exact words) he who has something to hide tries the hardest to hide it.
  14. my problem with the gun thing in this argument is that one inherently has advantages over the other (9mm vs ak-47). i'm not sure if this is the case with martial arts.
  15. while i agree that nything that makes a child want to read is good i'm not entirely convinced that their reasons for reading the books are that valid.... i mean, 'wanting to read' is one thing, 'wanting to read harry potter' is something else, 'wanting to read because of harry potter' is another and finally we have 'only wanting to read harry potter'.... is it good if all they read is harry potter?
  16. ...which is why i'd like for us guys, where-ever we are, to meet up and cross hands....
  17. hang on, so in the two months that we last saw you, you went from about to take your green to being a blue? anyway.... mart, i pay more for the 97 octane cos i have a button on my car that i can press to let the engine know that it should run the higher fuel mapping.... actually, i wished i had that car. i pay for 97 cos my car is one of them variable valve timed things and the way i drive it hard on the high cams the 97 octane is 'healthier' than the regular 95. the supposed high cam doesn't actually work properly if you don't use the 97 cos, while you get more air from the cam timing, you are not getting the proper combustion cos of the 95, hence, using 97 is recommended. sorry if i bored you....
  18. well, i'm kinda busy the coming weeks with job interviews and the like, as well as prepping my portfolio. just want to get into the right frame of mind and also want to let you guys know what's going on in my world.
  19. muaythaifreak mentioned in passing an important point that i mentioned before. a lot of styles have very little reference to attacks outside of their own style. you train with your own people, using your own moves or against a set of moves based loosely on what you might encounter. however, no matter how much you try to impersonate a teep, or a biu sau or whatever, unless you are skilled in the style from which the move comes from, it will most definitely not be used as a real practioner will use it. i can hypothersise all i like about what i would do against a tkd guy based on what i know but unless i try i will have no idea what he is likely to do. you can destroy any style in words based on their written principles but do you really know how they will fight? everyone knows what wing chun looks like and how the drills go but how many have actually crossed hands with intent with a wing chun guy? how many have fought gainst a muay thai guy who really wants to kill you as opposed to knock you out? how many has fought against karate, tkd, any style where it really was win or die? it isn't just the style that counts, or the fighter but also the situation. just to point out that i'm not sure if the gun thing works in these discussions as the implications are far greater then those involved with learning hand skills.
  20. the easiest way for me to know exactly what style you are doing is to ask what lineage of mantis are you from.
  21. as many of you know this little monkey has been 'homeless' for a while now. recently, a karate club (or whatever you prefere to call it although 'studio' is a bit poncey in my opinion...) has opened in my very local area. it is isshinryu and from what i can tell either headed by or even actually taught by ticky donovan. i have had a look on the net for info so no 'tap in google...' replies please. what i want are comments/thoughts/opinions from you guys who know about the style and what you think of it and the possibility of me training there.
  22. well, i'm not saying that they are bad books as i'm sure that for a childrens' book, they must be a revelation but i think that by their nature, a childrens' book is quite simplistic in their approach and execution and hence, not totally deserving of the praises. i think they are popular because of their simple nature; they don't require much effort to read (perhaps a sign of the times...). in the same league as lord of the rings? as the narnia tales? the mary poppins books? while they might be pushing forward the notion of a 'mature' childrens' book, it doesn't do anything new like the books i mentioned did. ... i really sound like an old man here...
  23. but you can't deny the fact that it was re-designed (from the original styles) to better suit teaching in schools as opposed to pure fighting. while this does not detract from anything which it claims to offer, it does serve to remind that maybe, because of this, there are elements that aren't as it were pre-funakoshi.
  24. what? you mean you don't wave the knife about like a crazed lunatic?
  25. she's a bit of a boxing freak and quite handy with her fists, if that's what you mean....
