"i dont know the Nike dri-fit" Companies like Nike, Addidas etc. a few years ago started making shirts etc with a synthetic type material that is supposed to absorb the sweat more effectively and keep it away from the body. Generally, those shirts are more expensive than the normal cotton ones. You know when cotton t shirts get wet, they tend to stick to your body; dri-fit is supposed to limit that as I understand it. The Shureido New Wave is supposed to do a similar job, and I've had one for a few months now and I'm fairly happy that it does. "Do you like your Tokaido NST, I think the NST is in 100% cotton" Yeah, I think that is correct, but would have to check to be 100% sure. I've only worn it a couple of times so too early to say anthing about it. It certainly looks very nice and is very light. It also did not shrink much (maybe a cm) the first time I washed it. Will see how it goes over the next few weeks. It does feel new and like it needs to be worn, and washed a few times.

So you wouldn't say it has sweat absorbing properties such as Nike Dri-fit? It's just a very high quality gi that is very light weight, but holds its shape like a heavy weight gi. The reason why I ask is I have just got the Tokaido NST and, although I have only worn it twice, I am beginning to suspect what I have described above.

Is it like a normal light weight cotton gi, or is it supposed to soak up the sweat better than normal cotton gis and keep it away from the body?

Just to correct the information above. The Pinack is not more expensive than the Tokaido NST. I think they are similarly priced. The difference comes in the shipping and if you decide to ship the NST EMS (the fastest option with insurance), it ends up a bit more expensive.

I think I've decided to go for the Tokaido NST. Simply a cost issue and I seem to remember the Pinack being about $20 more expensive, although would have to recheck the email I received.

I'll take that as a 'no'.

Has anyone got the Pinack, and can offer any feedback? It's time to get another gi and am wondering whether I should just get what I have again or take the more riskier route and get something different. Thanks.

Also, the other students at the dojo can be important. If you get on with the people there you're more likely to enjoy it and keep going back. Granted, difficult to know by just watching one session first, but something to think about when you have a look and when you're there for the first few times.

I have the NW 2 and keeping the sweat away from the body is probably its best feature. Also, after training when I fold the gi I always notice how cold the sweat is for some reason, so it might somehow be keeping me cooler also. The only problem I have noticed with the NW-2 is that dirt is accumulating in the lapels and is harder to wash out. I am about to buy some stain remover and see how that goes.

It was over fast that's for sure and obviously slightly disappointing because of the hype around the fight with Ultimate Fighter 3 etc.

Sorry, I'm still not clear on this . If I learnt Wudang Tai Chi Chuan in the UK, would I be learning the same thing that is taught at the Wudang Taoist Kung Fu Academy in Wudang?

When I type Wudang into google UK, I get Wudang Tai Chi. Is this a fighting form of Tai Chi? Are they the same thing? I thought Wudang was kung fu from Mount Wudang.

Well I wore it last night in training. I need a couple of weeks before I come to any conclusions. But quickly (and don't hold me to this yet), the things I noticed was that it was light. I have a 12 oz brushed cotton gi and I'd say it seemed quite a bit lighter. The NW 2 is supposed to be lighter than the NW 3, but heavier than the NW1. It felt good to train in. It's very soft. It's very easy to move in. "I am concerned about the noise I've heard it makes though. I don't want to sound like am rubbing sand paper together with every step I take". I don't recall it making that much if any noise when walking for example. There was no sand papery noise. The material is suprisingly soft and flexible. However, it does snap, which is surprising given how light it is. I didn't find it loud. Quite a nice crisp sound. Not in your face, but noticeable. I remember thinking it was pretty good (strange even) last night. It felt a bit posh knowing that it was this 'newer' material an' all. I'm tempted to agree with Jussi. It is a different experience. But I need more time with it. I've washed it today, and will try to wear it as much as possible over the next 2 weeks.

I just got this through the post about 30 minutes ago. It took a long time corresponding via email to get the measurements right. The time difference did not help. Once it was ordered it has taken about 2 weeks to get here, which I think is quite fast. I got them to cut the sleeves and pant lengths to approximate tournament cut. Initial impressions - very blue! Strange material - a bit like a thick t-shirt but does not fold/crease as much. The ends of the sleeves, trousers etc. are very thick. It gives it more weight and perhaps helps it to fall. Very light! It looks good. Will try it in practice later this evening.

Would it be futile to practice Shotokan and Wing Chun at the same time? (Not literally at the same time obviously, but on different days say).

No - Shureido are sending me a New Wave. What I meant is that none of the online shops in the UK stock the New Waves (I don't think). It's not like ShureidoUSA where you can just phone them up then (I guess) they can just send you a New Wave from their warehouse in the US.

I'm not sure but I don't think there is a distributor. You can get Shureido products from some stores but I think they just import on a small scale from Japan. I'm also pretty certain (although I could be wrong) that you cannot get the New Waves. Strange isn't it. You'd think that the UK market was big enough.

I'm going for the NW-2. I've been told it's a good balance between the NW-3 and the NW-1. Plus I read your review of the NW-3 and heard that it was a bit on the loud side. They're on holiday in Japan at the moment. I will have to wait to send the order/fax until next week. Shureido Japan have been good so far I thought. Some language problems but very patient given how many questions I have asked them - to try and get this order right.

From Shureido: "If you like to have a snap one for Kata, you'd better take NW-2. The NW-3 is the heavist material in the New Wave series. They (NW-1, 2 and 3) all are snap material, but NW-1 is a little light, so it is good forKumite but you can use for Kata. NW-3 is also good for Kata. They all are same material, different is just weight. NW-2 is most popular gi for Kata. It makes good sounds when you move. All of them do it, but NW-2 is just good weigh, not too heavy not too light."

Does anyone have any more information on the differences between Shureido's NW-1, NW-2 and NW-3? For example, are they cut the same? After a few emails I've got my measurements right (I think). But I'm having trouble getting info from Shureido on the differences between the three. Wish I knew basic Japanese. It would be a lot easier. Tx.

Tx. Also, Shureido were good enough to send me the measurements for their tournament cut uniforms this morning. I will pick it up later today. If anyone wants this information then I can pass it on.

I still have not ordered yet . Tokaido, Shureido, and Hirota all seem pretty good at the moment. The main difficulty is choosing the right size. It would be good if their websites had the exact measurements (jacket, sleave lengths etc.). I guess this is one of the disadvantages of not living in Tokyo. You would have better access.

Did you get the Tokaido TSA? How does it compare in terms of weight with the KI heavy weight? Would you also call it a heavy weight gi?
