Husband doesn't like me studying Karate
KarateMom replied to KarateMom's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
KickChick, He has started to see the benifits of me taking Karate. He likes the way my body is starting to tone up after having our second child! He has also helped me train and has noticed I am lot faster than I used to be! -
SuperLeeds, I get nervous to! Make sure you get plenty of sleep the night before, eat at least 45 minutes prior to testing, are well hydrated, Go to the bathroom prior to testing. Do your best! That's all you can do. If you mess up don't stop! Keep going! Best of luck to you! I test for my Blue Belt the 2nd week of December.

Husband doesn't like me studying Karate

How is your relationship at home other than Karate? Are you meeting each others "needs"? Our relationship is great. I can honestly say "yes" we are meeting each others needs in my opinion. We have 4 children, ages are 9, 7, 2, and 10 months. I am 32 and she is 31. Now, she is a stay at home mom, the most underrated, underpaid, thankless job in the world. BUT, one of the most important! We have 2 children, ages 3 1/2, and one. I am 31 and he is 37. I am also a stay at home mom (Thank you for the compliment about stay at home moms) I asked him if he felt we needed me to or wanted me to work part time and he said absolutely not. Now you can imagine what kind of energy level we have for one another. Sometimes ZERO! You need to worry about your marriage first and foremost if you love each other. Sometimes zero is right! He and I have talked and we both feel our marriage and family come first. If my wife said tomorrow, which she wouldn't, QUIT! I wouldn't hesitate. What makes my wife happy makes me happy. Would I regret? Yeah, but I would get over it. There is generally a tomorrow. If my husband quit, I would say why did you push me to get a hobby outside the house. Then once I find one and am into it and enjoy it you tell me not ask me to quit. I have tried to get him to get outside hobbies but he doesn't want to. Best advice, get him to talk about his misgivings about you learning Karate. If it just has to do with the children, he needs to suck it up and watch them for a little bit twice a week. I have asked him to talk about his "Misgivings" about me learning Karate and he says he was fine with it until I needed to attend class 3 times in a one week period. I missed a class the week prior and was told by the instructor that I needed to make up the class before I could advance. (I never did make up the class!) I am still goimg twice per week but he knows the days and time (Monday and Wednesday 7- 7:45) He comes home at 6:30 every other night he gets home at 6 sharp and spends the first 15 minutes in the bathroom. then when he comes back to the kitchen and I say I'm ready to go he pulls this B.S. about me taking the kids with me. They don't have any child care at the dojo I study at) -

axe kick
KarateMom replied to Lau gar's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
The axe kick is one that I have to know for my next belt. I really need some suggestions on how to do this technique better. I can bring my knee up to my chest but when I try to extend my leg out everything goes kaput! -
I train at the dojo on Monday and Thursdays.

Husband doesn't like me studying Karate
KarateMom replied to KarateMom's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I told my husband that we really needed to talk about the Karate topic. This is what I got After I told him my side I also told him this: I would prefer to go to class by myself, afterall this is suposed to be for me. But since I am going twice a week I will take one child with me one of the two nights. Response So I guess he can't handle two kids under 4 years of age for 45 minutes 2 times per week. -

Thank you everyone for all of the advice(SP?)! KSN Doug - I asked him to go with me and he said hevwould think about it. A few months went by and I asked him again, he said he wasn't interested at the time. So, I have stopped asking him about going to Karate. KickChick - I hear you! I think my husband is jealous of the fact that I have a hobby outside the house that I enjoy and excel at. Not to mention the fact that I have made numerous friends in my nine months of training. I just want to do something for myself, I am training to: get more self confidence, exercise, and God forbid be able to protect myself and my two children if the times comes. I just wish he would get a hobby or if he doesn't want to take up a hobby be happy for me that I have one! My husband and children come first and I have told him that until I'm blue in the face, I've even told him that I would put off training for awhile if that would make him feel better. -

shotochem, Thanks for the kind words! Our daughter was also taking Karate (She was in the Tiny Tiger class) she is 3 1/2. This was a bad idea. She started to misbehave at preschool, home and Karate class. We took her out of it. (Maybe when she's older we'll try again.) You are right though about making up the class and the grading period. Thank you! -
Godd Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have! I think he is jealous of the fact that I have a hobby that I like outside the house and that I have made many friends. I have never discouraged him from going and doing something for himself! -
Husband doesn't like me studying Karate

In order to have 8 classes per month (Saying there are 4 weeks in the month) I have to go twice a week. I went on Monday of that week and I went on Thursday but at the wrong time( So I couldn't take that class as it was a kids class) I normally go on Monday and Wednesday. This means I only went once that week (since I couldn't go on that Friday) I had 7 classes that month instead of 8. Hence I need to make up one class to have 8 for that month. -
Hello everyone, I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place! nine months ago my husband was encouraging me ( a stay at home mom) to get out of the house and take up a hobby. So after some thought and research I decided to take up Karate at a Do Jo 10 minutes away from our home. FYI I discussed this with him prior to starting classes and he was fine with it.( so he said.) We have two children oldest is almost 4 y.o. youngest is almost one. So this requires him being home to watch them or I have to take them with me(and try to take class while watching them! ) I go to class twice a week. I had a really bad day two weeks ago and miss read the class schedule, I went at 7 pm instead of 6:15pm. This put me down one class as we are required to have at least 8 classes per month. (I willingly admit being down a class is my fault!, This was a Thursday night) I asked my husband to please watch the kids Friday night so I could go to class and then I wouldn't need to make it up. He said absolutely not! My main problem is, my husband doesn't under stand why I need to make up this class and refuses to allow my to go to class 3 times just one week in order to make up the missed class but also to stay caught up! I don't want to upset him but I feel I should be able to continue taking Karate! I think he feels by coming home late or refusing to watch the kids that I'll get tired of taking them with me and stop taking Karate. I personally think if he didn't like it he should have said something before I really got involved (I'm an Orange belt) Don't get me wrong my husband works hard at his job. But his job is from 8 am to 5 pm Monday thru Friday. As a mom my job never ends! He doesn't have any hobbies that he goes out side of the house to do, however I have told him to go do something! Get out of the house and have some fun! He chooses not to. What do you think?

common mistakes in sparring
KarateMom replied to CTpizzaboy's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
It was an in school tournament. I have sparred many times as I am an Orange belt, but I had only point sparred a few times prior to the tournament. There was a women's division and if you wanted to enter the competition you were more than welcome. I talked with all of the other ladies in the school and several of them said they would compete. However the night of the tournament there were only 3 that showed including me. Two orange belts and one second green belt. It was the first to 5 points. The young lady that was the other orange belt had two stripes and experience also in Kung Fu. I had no stripes. I won 5-3. Then both of us (orange belt Ladies) sparred against the second green belt for fun. we both lost. (I lost 5-3, (she lost 5-2) -

Yes, When I was 18(I'm 31 now and in a different part of the US.) I was taking Go shin gitsu(SP?) Karate. My instructor tried to do some unspeakable things to me one night after class. Everyone left and our Sensei didn't realize my brother(10 at the time was there with me) I didn't have my car it was in the shop and we were waiting to be picked up by our dad. He threatened to hurt my brother just as our dad pulled up to pick us up. I told my dad he tried to "Put the moves on me in a forceful way" and my dad called the police. We didn't go back after that!

Peripheral vision is the key. Motion detection is keenest in your peripheral vision. I agree! -
should young kids do a martial art?
KarateMom replied to kickbuttnat's topic in Instructors and School Owners
I think it depends on the child!
