  1. I have a solution to the McDojos problem. Make sure there are atleast 10 color belts and make every single belt including white have 5 degrees cept for Black which has 10. Im sure not even the McDojos can mess that one up..........lol.. Oh crap wait every TKD out there will end up ranking up every weekend and charging $90 for it CRAP...NM about my idea =p
  2. Holy Crap And I thought my style took forever although in the long run I guess it does. We go Tuesdays and Thrusdays nights for 3 hours a night. On Saturday we have an optional class but basicaly if you were to attend all 3 classes and only miss about 5 per month you could rank up every 3 months but don't let that fool you. Once you get 1st degree Black belt in our system you wait 2 years for 2nd degree training. After 2nd degree you wait 3 years for 3rd. and so on so on.....For every degree you wait that many years and at the 9th degree black belt waiting 10 years would be CRAZY but it takes about 45 some years from day one in our training to achieve 10th degree. But in our system only 6th degree and higher are allowed to actualy leave and create thier own Dojo...so those that want to teach have to wait about 22-25 years depending on the Classes you miss. *sighs and takes a breathe* the bad thing is im dedicated and really wanting to open up a dojo I work along side our Grandmaster a 10th degree and I love it but I have about 9 years in and I purposely held myself back from testing for skill reasons and morale reasons but most other dojos in our area take bout 5 years to get 1st black and they test every 2 years for the next degree no matter what. So when you compare my style to thiers....lol I have to wait a while but its well worth it.
  3. Its funny but I didn't see anyone mention Speed as a Factor I did skip page 3 of the posts so I appologize for those there. I take a very differnt style of Jujitsu called Manabi Masho we express that Speed and Technique and Flow of the movement is better then power and range. This may seem sick or differnt to some of you but almost all Easter MA is taught that speed is top on the list for training. We also do not chamber punches at all even for hard ones, if you practice this and can get Close Quarter Combat where your literaly chest to chest you can light a person up and eventualy learn a 2-4 inch punch where you hit and instead of drawing back the hand you swing over to another area then another and speed is the factor on this technique. Just my opinon I have sparred and gotten alot of compliments on my speed with hands. Has for "nearest target" Idea, everyone says that but they go for the knees thighs, torso, or head, When the nearest target is always the hand/fingers/toes/ think about it....
  4. I am an Instructor at my Grandmasters Dojo although I don't have full command I do take over alot of classes from time to time but we have ran into these issues. There are a few rules we go by, maybe they can help you. #1 No students are allowed to Date or become involved in the Classes! #2 Age and Body Type are not considered during the Ranking System! #3 When the Grandmaster asks you to do something you will do it! #4 No Teaching the style or movement outside of class to anyone! Ok those are some of our main rules we have had issues over the last few years with problem people even a 6th Dan student who ran off to create another dojo dedicated to our style ended up messing up hardcore more then once and has just recently been fully stripped of every title and award he recieved in our system....18 years down the drain! but with the dating rule, that only applies to students who were not actively romantic before signing up....in other words if you and your girl friend sign up then its ok. but you can't date any of the other girls there because of Drama issues and when hearts break one or both students quit coming.
  5. Hmm Do I dedect sarcassm......because I didn't see any of those ideas that I posted in anyone elses post. The guy asked for help and opinons and I travel to differnt schools I have seen 3 story dojos that look like temples and dojos that literaly are about 45 by 45 feet. I was just trying to help! Please if I seemed like a copy cat I am sorry but I just reread the page 1 posts and didn't see anything like what I said on anyones. =p Sometimes I think that either I am on a differnt page from everyone else or everyone else just seems not be reading a book at all!
  6. That is not how it works...noone registers. There are Martial Arts Clubs that can register you as a Deadly Weapon but its just paper and not really legal, nor does it mean anything in Real life. However .....if you get into a brawl and end up hurting someone heavily or killing them and alot of the evidence says you were at fault the procecutor can come in and bring up that you are a Black Belt and paint a picture of how you train for killing and such. I have witnessed this by seeing a teen in our class who just made 1st Dan go up for Murder and was tried as an Adult. The procecutor used the Black Belt as a sign of his anger and power, although No state has any laws against Martial Arts thank god. So techniqualy being called a "leathal weapon" is not against the law its just looked down on when you fight. Same goes for Boxers and KickBoxers it can be used in court against them but in todays court system a lawyer can bring up anything and use it against you.
  7. You will probably not be impressed at all and probably won't belive me but I have connections and I promise this story is true. In Japan and the mountains of Tibet they do train Ninjas from very early ages and even accept orphans into the programs when the child becomes about 25 or so they are set out on missions. The missions of course bring in money usualy and someone or company hires the services of Ninja and lately over the last 20 years I have heard startling rumors that almost 60% of the buisness that goes through is for contract spying on celebrities from all around the world. Yes Celebrity snap shots and if you think about it at fist it seems stupid, but what most people don't understand is if you can get one snap shot of just about any female celeb in thier underware or during a drinking eposide or sex its worth $40,000 american dollars and then on second thought you may be thinking.....wow easy money and no killing...where do i sign up. but seriously they do get recruited for photo spying and tracking celebrities alot, as for killings I have no idea. I would assume some high up company or mob bosses would go to them because I would. If you go to Hells Angels or some crazy crack house you never know who is gonna be a cop or is gonna run with the money. Not that I would ever kill or want anyone to be killed *coughs* ... hehe
  8. I can honestly say I have no weaknesses regaurding what my style does or doesn't do. I have had compliments and standing elevations from Grandmasters who have more years in Martial Arts then most Masters have been alive. I do Manabi Masho Jujitsu, the only way to describe it would be you have to forget everything you know or thought you knew about fighting, the human body, pressure points, and energy ki /chi. Then you would still have to see us at work. What we do is on our website in the link area titled "what is manabi masho jujitsu? I will say that one thing that makes our style very differnt from other judo or jujitsu styles is that we Train to purposely never go to the ground. Although we are taught hundreds of grappling moves and sacrifice take down moves we are taught to never do them. For those that ask why..........pick a fight in your local club using only wrestling or grappling...........ill mail flowers to your bedside table in the hospital as you slowly recover! =p What i meant by that is grappling is a 1 v 1 art. Unless your in a room or dark alley and its 1 v 1 or in a cage 1 v 1 its ok.........but with witnesses , friends, and other issues its completely bogus in a real bar fight or street fight
  9. Hmmm....I am not trying to come off rude, but I am a man who speaks the truth and get's to the point. Having said that.... Just out of curiosity were you a problem student or something? Did you walk out of training a few times, or always say "I can't" or cuss out someone during class? Other then that if you didn't I would have to say that by listening to your story your Master has something against you and any Master who plays favorites is trying to glorify himself, not his style.
  10. When you say "bad habits" do you mean in Martial Arts? If so continue to read. I have noticed alot of martial arts bad habits lately I will list a few and I am sure everyone does one of these atleast! #1 Tugs thier pants just above the knee during thier stance or before a kick. Almost 99.9% of the time they do it 3 quick times. #2 While in a fighter/boxing stance some of you for some unknown reason lift one of your hands up to your face to rub your nose! #3 Way to many people trying to block, block, block, block, then attack attack......You create a rythm that any pro or vet of sparing can interprat. #4 The turning of the foot while in a stance like your Bruce Lee.....Come on guys n gals.....that's just getting down right silly. #5 I have noticed alot of TKD students/Masters do combo attacks then leap back..........WHY!!!!!!! you were pressing the attack LOL #6 During streetfights- Taking off your shirt or jacket while not watching the other guy........can you say SUCKER PUNCH! #7 Kicking at the worse possiable time!!! I see so many people try to kick me when im 3 feet from them! What is the point in that!!!! #8 The Peekaboo boxer stance! THis has to be the worse thing you can ever do in a fight. A peekaboo stance is when you take your hands into a fist and basicaly rest them on your Cheeks of your face. This blocks your vision and I love to personaly smash thier hands into thier eyes and say "Stop hitting yourself". #9 Spinning move followed by another spinning move. Ok I have seen this ALOT when sparring with JKD students....not bashing but just explaining. They will move in to do some combo and 2 of the moves are spinning! Like a spinning backfist, then they spin the other way to kick or close in elbow........umm can you say OFFBALANCE. #10 Not watching your surroundings! This is a big deal for me in the style I use we are taught early on that a fight can be easily won by paying attention to the enviroment. Nothing is funnier then seeing a full grown man trip over a chair during a fight or sparring on accident. #11 Wild rage like rushes....Oh man I love it when someone just charges me, either they blast in wild haymakers in sloppy aim or they try to do a wrestling like football tackel. Your sefu/sensei/soke would be ashamed!!! #12 Taking off your shoes during a real fight! WHY....the shoes are harder then your foot! Keep them on and kick thier shins to death. #13 Not taking off hats! The worse case is the guy you run into who wants to do some friendly sparring and he has a hat on. Either take it off, or hold it in your hand to help you. Anyone can easily grab the bill of the hat and move you around like a rag doll from there.....where the head goes the body must follow. #14 Jumping into a stance right off during an actual fight. For me this is a biggie. I don't even use a stance during sparring at the begginning I don't want the other guy to know I have skill untill the fight is over. When I spar it never fails the other guy will do his stance and usualy telegraph to me what style he knows, how skilled he is, what foot he leads with, if he is left/right handed, where the blind spots are, where his stances balance is at, and I can almost read how the other guy will lose.
  11. NEVER USE TELEMARKETERS LOL...... Ok just a thought but our dojo does demonstrations at two fairs that go on during the summer. They are of course free to watch if your in the fair and people in the hot sun like to sit under shade and be entertained! We basicaly try to do about 80% of a deomonstration geared with and for the children ages 5-17 because children are easy to pull in adults and teens are harder. Also - we print out sheets with information of our website, where our school /dojo is and some info in flyers and put them under the windshield wippers of parked cars at highschools during school but don't do this more then once! It atleast gets some attention of your school to the teens and most of them have younger or older syblings too and who knows you could get the entire family in.
  12. I have your easy answer!!!!! You should have a time limit on when a student can or can not go out for thier belt ranking. Also have a set rule about during that time how many classes they are allowed to miss. Sit down and speak with the parents of upcoming testing students and let them know the dates, and achievements thier kid has. Encourage the parents to understand that skill is something learned by both the time to do something and the love to listen. Also keep in mind NEVER EVER play favorites, if you pull one child up to the class to do a move, make sure you pull them all up one by one. Every Parent wants thier child to be the exception and best at everything and it's your job to make sure that thier child becomes 100% of what they could be.
  13. I am 27 and very skilled and I run into the issues mostly where people I have to teach who are older then me don't tend to listen. So I feel you, but if the Father is actualy giving bad advice, or counteradvice to what you are instructing on then you need to pull rank and show your in charge. It has nothing to do with being mean, because the father is both stepping on your toes and slowing or upsetting his sons training. Remember to keep in mind They both are there to learn a skill that you arleady have some rank and experience in. The best advice is always done by example of action.
  14. Our school has some issues with students mostly the teenagers who get aggrovated at repeated movements. I have a super fast solution to your problem. Don't lecture the ones getting bored, set them up in front of the class room to show thier performance in that move, then have them do it a few times to a fall guy. After doing it properly a few times say good, and sick your fall guy on him in a fast real time attack. If your student fails it is because he was not ready, or was nervous, or possiable because he was just scared. Either way you should lecture after he has failed not before, so that he learns from failure and then advice. Sounds alittle cruel but it get's everyones attention and what good is a black belt who can execute thousands of moves and yet freezes when attacked!!! Something to think over...
  15. What you fail to understand is what you fail to see. The following are my weapons, steeltoed boots- Hat- Leather normal Belt- Keys- Rings on fingers- Sweeter/jacket- bandana- sunglasses- Newspaper rolled up- sodapop can- fliplighter- book of matches- need I go on.... It is very upsetting to me as a very dedicated martial artist to see the young run off and choose the sword, knife, staff, or nunchucka as thier weapon of choice when going off into the streets. Why choose something that is Designed to be a weapon when you have so many things that are everyday items which can be turned to weapons by Skill and knowledge. In a demonstration I did for a police force last year I asked the police to pat me down and strip me of any possiable weapons. They took my keys, bandanna, and said Ok. When asked to be part of my demonstration I used the officers hat smacked it down over his head stepped around and chocked him with his own tie, then lightly kicked his kidney with my steeltoed boots. When the other officer was asked to come to me, she didn't demonstrate pulling out her sidearm because I didn't have a weapon. I had a quarter and tapped her lightly on the forehead with it and she went down and that was that. As a Martial Artist we should all learn to literaly become skilled in Deceptive abilities. For those who actualy carried a weapon in the streets you would have been arrested had you been checked by the cops, I will never have to worry bout that issue because my 10+weapons are everyday things. ((((For an exercise our Grandmaster asks our students to pick anything from thier house and bring it to him the next class and he would show atleast 2 ways it could be used to kill a person or break thier bones- This is a great exercise you should all do.......because literaly there is NOTHING that can not be used as a weapon.....Nothing....)))
  16. The sheperd who drives his flock of sheep to him by fear often has sheep who mistake the common frog for evil. The sheperd who holds his flock of sheep to him by love will often see an abundance of wool and new lamb. It is the worst thing to see spirtual leaders speak ill and negative things. I would advise everyone to search thier souls and experiences in Martial Arts. It has given me alot to live for and I can not recall any negative actions from it. Also any church that has a preacher who spends more time expressing hate then the love of Jesus or God should be booted from that church.
  17. WOW Alot of opinons and noone has brought up the best point yet, so let me begin by doing it. You seem to have enough room to pack in about 20-30 students, what you need to do is first create 2-3 classes. First class childrens class age 4-11 Juniors class age 12-17 Adults class age 18-up What this does is give you the ability to get over 50 students and you can also give more attention to students. What you also have to realise is that in the Summer you get more children, in the Winter alot more adults. If you need more room though for kata training I would suggest that you seek a Park, someones house who has a large yard or a undistrubed area where you can train. This gives the students the feeling of actualy going out on a Training mission. Also you can tie in some family/social support. it works wonders for our school because we can train at a students house on a offday for 4-5 hours then barbq and sit around and actualy have fellowship. Remember that alot of students are not just seeking exercise, or warrior training, many will be there for disapline, and structured guidance as well. I wish you luck and drop me a Personal message anytime my Grandmaster has over 59 years in Martial Arts and is very fabled in going to aid other Dojos in troubled times. *BOWS*
