  1. When did Stan fight full MT rules with elbows,I thought the fight with Kirkland was modified rules for the WMC title(no elbows????) Ivan Hypolite was a great fighter. Peter Smit was a hard fighter as well. JWP is great ,spent a year off(just boxing) and comes back and wins on the Kings Birthday show, not many fighters can do that.
  2. If you are talking kickboxing and not MT then Maurice Smith,Benny Urquidez,Pete Cunningham,Hector Penna,Richard Sylla,Stan Longinides. If you are talking Muay Thai then you have Rammon Dekker,Rob Kaman,Sangtien Noi,Jongsanan Woodenman,Samsan,JWP,Danny Bille,Stephan Nikima,Ronny Green,Sakad Petchindee. Sorry there are too many good fighters to pick one.
  3. Havoc, They weren't the best from either side, there weren't any of the world champions from China but they were high ranked San Shou guys and the Thais that fought were top 10 ranked Stadium fighters but not the no#1 guys,so I think they were evenly matched, but yes it is stupid to compare styles but fighter with there own styles and skills is cool and regardless of the results it was a hell of an event. The Chinese guys did look like MT guys with throws though.
  4. Well gents I've just returned from a long stay in Thailand and the highlight of my recent trip was the Kings Birthday Muay Thai event. Just absolutely amazing and guest what China fought in a team event against ranked Thai fighters not like the last lot of fighters that were supposted to be top Thais but weren't. And guess what the Thais blitz them many by K.O.,one chinese guy did win and that because he saw he fellow countrymen get koed when they tried to throw,so he was smart enough just hit and run and won on points. They also had an 8 man elimination and it was good to see an Aussie get through, that being JWP. 100000 people were there and it was crazy and full on! San Shou is ok but its no MUAY THAI!
  5. Middle /Super middle,5'11'' when I'm not competing I try and still maintain my weight as it can be a problem if you put on too much pud in the down time.
  6. You sound like you would be good at NHB ever thought of that, they have elements of Muay Thai and the submission grappling. There are some of the best fighters and gyms in this style of fighting in the US.
  7. You sound pretty fit,you will find you will have to get the cardio going as MT is an aerobic sport. You may find at 40 that your injury rate maybe higher than someone in their 20's but that shouldn't be a problem unless you are competing.Your strength training will help when you do grappling and knees but speed and timing are the keys to your kicking and punching. What other martial arts have you done?
  8. I have fought in boxing, kickboxing and Muay Thai,I prefer the Thai rules.
  9. My injury tally: Broken Nose(twice) Chipped Tooth(from an elbow) Broken little toe(right foot) Hairline fracture shin(left leg) Broken ribs(still give me sleepless nights) Fractured right hand. Tenden damage right shoulder. Left ankle did the achilles. plus the usual cut and bruises(about 4 or 5 times had to be stitched up) I sound like Eval Kenievel but thats the price you pay sometimes.
  10. The gift of the gab is big plus, alot of good fighters get forgotten because they dont talk up the fight, look at the biggest names in boxing they always talk it up. The media love BS,take a big look at the WWF 50% talking/30% soap opera/20% action and check out the crowds, television sales and product merchandising and none of it is real fighting..just good marketing. Some fighters also just have that magic thing called charisma.
  11. To cripple someone with a single leg attack whether to the leg or thigh would in my thinking a fluck shot, your not kicking a dumby that is standing dead still you are fighting a living, moving, defencive, offencive thinking human being. I also have known guys who have broken opponents legs(Thigh,Tibia and shattered knee caps) but they were not one off shots but set ups and usually middle to end of the bouts. I trained with a Thai who had a reputation of breaking the pad holders forearms when they're holding pads for him,he was awesome. In Savate they kick to the knee directly, so where are all the broken knees in one shot? You can hurt a wrestler when he tries coming in but if he is half decent and has done his homework he will take you to the ground.
  12. Easy one Bruce Lee would clean up,I love Jacky Chan buy its all movie stunts not the real deal. Lee would wipe Jet Li easy too!
  13. That is weird what happened to the post. I agree with both Iron and Ken,I am a Southpaw and have never had any problems with Orthodox fighters but I know they have had problems with me the main problem being moving the wrong way and throwing the wrong shot at the wrong time. If you train both you can switch hit which is even more confusing to them. Do what feel natural.
  14. (i took off the the messed up message) [ This Message was edited by: MuayTB1 on 2001-08-25 13:45 ] [ This Message was edited by: MuayTB1 on 2001-08-25 13:46 ]
  15. You should be running daily between 8/10 km. Do your fitness work in the morning(running,sit-up,plyometrics ect) and you fight training at night (sparring, bag and pad work) Fitness is everything so you had better push it more than 4 nights. Good luck
  16. To prevent your eyes watering when hit in the nose, rub your nose hard and slap your cheeks, you'll find your eyes wont water when you get hit now(old boxing trick!) As for fighting Alex Tui,sparring not fighting, fighting wouldn't be a good move. If you really want to get into the fight game those are the best guys around Sydney so you should seek one of those gyms out to train at.
  17. Angus we are talking about guys who can fight not some slep off the street full of piss.I have fought both in the street and ring and it is very hard to take a guy out with a single leg kick if he is half decent a fighter. Your in Sydney here a few guys in Sydney I know that are good that you could go and spar with and try out your theories; Nick Stone,KamSung Doi,Colin Holland,Adam Watt,Alex Tui or Hape Ngarnona.(you can find their ph numbers in IK magazine) If you go to any of those guys gyms you could try your stuff with them and let us know how you go.(if you can take anyone out with one shot punch or kick let me know,Lol )
  18. Sorry to burst anyones bubble but I have yet to see anyone take someone out with a single leg kick, try watching some of the Pride series tapes and you'll see what I mean.
  19. I believe it is easier to teach a wrestler to strike than to teach a striker to grapple.I wouldn't peg all wrestlers to be unable to punch or kick.some are quite good strikers. Even if they are average it will be enough to get their opponent to the mat in their comfort zone but like I said previously it can be unpredictable out there and sometimes the K.O. will come out of nowhere. Bottom line best to cross train with good people in all.my main skill area in hands and feet but every week I train with the grapplers to help my allround skill level. Cheers.
  20. I agreeif a fighter wants to go to the ground it will happen,I have always been a striker but I have the utmost respect for wrestlers(I actually cross train now with some good guys in wrestling) As for who would win well that another "What if?" if its in the ring yes the grappler would 9 times out of 10,in the street though it maybe different, fighting has no formula,it is unpredictable. A friend of mine is a state ranked wrestler and he has no problems with another friend who is world ranked in MT when they spar NHB rules once they hit the mat..Can't name any names.
  21. In Thailand and under the WMC rules(the main governing body running Muay Thai) knees and elbows are the number one scoring techniques and to throw like Judo is illegal, you can hold their leg and kick the other legs out but you can't hip throw. As for the knock out you are probably right but there are more than one way for the K.O. Do they sanction elbow fights in the U.S?
  22. Elbows and Knees score highest, then kicks then punches.A fighters aggression is also part of the scoring.
  23. There is a saying'if you cut the base of the tree it will fall',so the legs are the first to weaken then the body then the head. The reason the chin is a good target is there are nerves that cause a K.O.,the chin is not a solid but is loose and the jaw can be broken with a good shot. The solar plex is another good target as are the floating ribs.
  24. About 3 years ago I retired from the ring but still train as much and with the lads,on the street the other week,I do security work, night clubs so its a regular thing.
  25. You guys get into this style vs style thing alot,to me thats a load,it's individual vs individual. In Thailand as around the world different gyms concentrate on different thing, some gyms produce fine boxers ,some kicker and some alround fighters. To say San Shou is better or Muay Thai is better is pretty childish as there will be good fighters in both,it's sorta like saying my big brother can beat your big brother. There probably is San Shou here but Muay Thai is the sport that is televised weekly.C7 show Thai fights while Fox show the Aussie based events, the only other arts televised is Karate and Tae Kwon Do and they are few and far between. As for Cung Le,I have watched himfight a couple of times on ESPN and he is O.K. but some of the guys he's fought aren't much,I'd like to see him fight someone of equal standard,a real International opponent. Then you would see how hot or not the guy really is. (No point fighting stiffs, anyone will look good fighting guys below par)
