  1. Frank Shamrock ,Tito Ortiz are my favs to watch. Pride series is a better series than UFC,its a bit more hardcore. K1 isn't as cool as real Muay Thai for me. I prefer the lighter weights than the big boys, who at times get abit messy. Peace.
  2. Sorry to burst your bubble but Muay Thai is more popular outside the USA. In Australia and New Zealand kickboxing is no where near as popular MT. Japan has MT and the K1 series(which is basically modified Thai) Europe is MT mad and has some of the very best fighters. No one is into conditioning as well as the Thais, they are the Kings. Kickboxing was created in Japan in the late '60s,it was a modified version of what the Thais were doing, then American picked it up and changed it again and called it "kickboxing or full contact".It was the US that usd the Karate and Tae Kwon Do type kicking. 2 groups formed; the PKA and the WKA. PKA had an 8 kick per round rule and kicking had to be above the belt. WKA could kick to the legs. Both had their own world champions. From this there grew new groups,ISKA,KICK,WAKO,WKO,WKC and the list goes on and on.A ****e load of politics. Meanwhile the Muay Thai from Thailand was and always will be run by the Thai government, this why Mt will always be stronger. The rules are always the same and have been since 1929. As for the fighter side of this there are great fighters from Kickboxing and Muay Thai but comparing them is not going to prove anything, they are the same but different. Picking up stuff from both is the best thing to do and be an individual not a style. peace.
  3. Its like comparing rugby and grid iron, both simmilar but very different. Kickboxers usually win under kickboxing rules against MT and visa versa MT always wins under their rules against kickboxers. The tempo and rythem of the bouts are different. Who would win in NHB,kickboxer,Mt or grappler???? The point is they are all good and every individual will bring something to each art. I believe inthe individual before the art, just because your a mt guy does not guarantee a victory over this or that. Its how hard you train and how you are as an individual.
  4. The only ones that are really recognised here in Australia are the Thai ones run by the Thai government.WMC and the IFMA. They are run and sanctioned by the Government not by businessmen who just want to make a profit. The ISKA and WKA used to be quite strong here but since the majority of people are involved in Muay Thai they have faded. I think the big issue isn't so much what title some one has its matching of the elete like the K 1 series that really excites the general public. 2 great fighters of equal skill is what its all about not someone with a noname world title.
  5. I'm not into the conspiracy thing either but I am curious to how he died.I sorta find it hard to believe he got a blood clot from a head ache pill? I don't believe the death touch, ninjas and all that gear about his death. It would be interesting to know the real facts not just the rumours and crap, same as alot of other icons,JFK,James Dean,Jimmy Hendrix,etc... Just because the it 30 years ago doesn't mean its forgotten.
  6. World renown Bruce Lee historian David Tadman and JDavis are putting a petition together to uncover the truth and facts about the passing of this planets greatest influence in the Martial arts Bruce Lee.Go to : http://www.network54.com/Hide/Forum/185654 for more information.
  7. Pads and the heavy bag will toughen up your shins. Before you fight you'll have to get rid of the fear factor as this could prevent you winning fights.Sparring is good for this as it's probably a confidence thing. My biggest advice is make sure you are with a good gym(check their rep with other Muay Thai gyms). A good coach will know when you're ready and not throw you to the wolves. Good luck. As for being 22,I wish I was still 22.
  8. I'm showing my age here but yeah I know of Steve Sheppard,he was one time a world champion and promoted and fought on his own shows.Wasn't he based in Florida? The first Aussie to challenge for a world title was Dave Hedgecock for Steve Sheppards title.Sheppard won,I think by a K.O. On a separate note JWP beat Rodtung on Master Toddy's show in Vegas and Nick Kara beat Manson Gibbson.Juansanan Fairtex beat Daniel Dawson over 5 rounds. It's good to see the Aussie doing well.aussie, aussie, aussie, oie, oie, oie!!
  9. Each are good in their range. You can't effectively kick when your in close that when you Knee and elbow. I tend to elbow when they try and knee as in some cases they tend to drop the guard when they knee making it a good scoring shot, not to mention the possiblity of causing a cut. I'm talking from a ring perspective.
  10. I drop by here occasionallybut tend to spend more time at the AX site ,only because it is more fighter oriented. Heard Ludwig beat Ole Laursen in the K-1 Max US series,so it will be Duane Ludwig representing the US in Japan for the finals. [ This Message was edited by: Danny boy on 2002-03-20 06:39 ]
  11. Sasha's carreer went down to toilet when he was charged with spousal abuse when he beat his wife.He was to appear in court but was a no show.Guess he wasn't as rightious as in the movies.
  12. I started at 9 in kyokushin and have been fighting since(I'm 35)I have trained in most full contact arts, boxing, kickboxing and muay thai and wrestling(amateur). Over 26 years of training and I am still learning, thats the great thing about the MA.As for ability the younger you start the better,my son has started traing in Karate and is what I consider a natural,I think it comes down to the genes. He's only 6 and mores like he's been training for years, the big thing about karate is the focus it develops it helped me when I progressed to MT,thats why I wanted him to start with it before traing in other arts.
  13. Hey Yoda, You'd know of Ronnie Green in a big way, wasn't Master Toddy his trainer at one stage? Another Pom that came out to Aussie was Kash Gill,he fought a guy by the name of Alex Tui.Alex k.oed him but it was a hell fight. After that fight we all hung out together in the Cross, which is probably the equivalent as your Soho. A couple of heavy weight Poms came out to fight Stan the Man but I can't remember they're names.
  14. Hey Tommy, Ronnie Green was a pioneer for the sport in England. He was awesome. He fought on one of the Las Vegas shows afew years back against Pete Cunningham, top fight. He also fought Thai legend Sagat Pechindee in Japan,I think he lost on points. He has fought alot of Thais and was one of the first poms to go to the land of Muay Thai. Hows you demo fight coming along with Don Wilson,I met the Dragon a few years back and he came across as top guy. What he charging for a seminar these days? You yanks should be watching out for the Aussie invasion,JWP and Daniel Dawson are both fighting on Master Toddy's show in Vegas. I have trained with both boys and they are both ****e hot fighters. It would be nice if some of you yanks can step up to the plate and give them a good run(instead of importing Thai's for them to fight). JWP is a great guy and I train with him for several years and the kid just gets better and better. Good luck with your upcoming show. Chow .
  15. Kickboxer International,Muay Thai News,Fighting Arts(Japanese) and sometimes Blackbelt. You can get most info off the web and more up to date stuff as well.I mainly get magazines when I travel for something to read.
  16. 5lbs isn't much weight, cutting out the carbs 3/4 hours before you sleep is good.No Cheese, milk products stick to lean foods and the old fish, fruit and salads is pretty much the go.If your running in the morning add a light run after training to burn off any excess fats at night. Don't try and drop the weight the day before or especially on the day of the fight as this could drain you,use the 3 weeks to do it the right way.5lbs isn't much so I wouldn't think its to hard unless you haven't much body fat. :bigwink:Good luck!
  17. I had an old Sports Illustrated with Bob Thurman on the cover, first kickboxer to ever get a cover on that mag,it said in the article he was a golden gloves champion.I remember watching his fight with Theriult and was disappointed he only lasted 3 rounds(as I recall) but I think Theriult was a little heavier.that must have been '86/'87. Man,I'm showing my age here,Lol.
  18. I agree with everything stated here, the only thing I don't agree with that it doesn't have power.I favour my lead leg and it is definitely more powerful than my rear due to leverage and wedging. This is purely biomechanics add with explosiveness(fast twitch muscle fibre) and you will have a powerful kick. Lee favoured the side kick for this as he knew that with correct form and application this kick was a winner,he actually got this from Joe Lewis and made it better and more suited to his own needs. Its like a boxers jab,you can flick it in or when needed you can drive it home, what ever the situation calls for.
  19. Met Don Wilson a couple of times at Benny Urquidez' old Jet Centre and he was a real gentleman.I'd love to get a copy of his fight with Theriult(if anyone has one let me know ) I was never into the above waist type fights I fought 3 times in these rules with mixed results but always felt limited. Those rules suited TDK guys(especially when they had the minimum kick count). Blinky Rodrigez was another good fighter from that golden age.His fight with Bill Wallace was a classic. And if your talking old legend what about the guy who started it all Joe Lewis.
  20. Didn't Bob Thurman get belted when he fought Jean Yvse Theriaut. If your talking old fighters them Benny Urquidez would have to be the king. I have a couple of old tapes of Bob Thurman he looked like a boxer with a front kick, pretty limited. Troy Dorsey was a great alrounder.Pure guts all the way.
  21. If you really want to be the best then you will have to sacrifice alot and push your limits over and over.
  22. If your in Canada get intouch with Mike Miles,he' steer you in the right direction. Try http://www.mikemiles.com
  23. Here's mine: Everyday: Run between 5-8km I vary my running with sprints but I run every day. Abdominals:30 minutes straight(no breaks) I vary my gut work aswell, never the same everyday.(upper, middle, obliques, lower) Pad work 5 days per week.5 round boxing/5 rounds kicks and knees. 5 days speedball,5 rnds. 5 days Heavy bag,5 rnds. 30 minutes of stretching before and after training. I do my running and cal in the mornings and my fight training at night. I grapple(wrestle) 2 days. My only part of my training that I don't do everyday is spar,2 time a week I get in a few rounds but then again I'm not fighting anymore.
  24. He was as good as any of the above the waist fighters of that time.As for protected ,I think every association protected their champion to a certain extent,he wasn't a leg kick fighter because he really only had one good leg so it would have been pretty easy for a leg kick fighter to injure his good leg.His main other weapon was his left hook. As for his seminars he is always entertaining and a good ambassador for the Martial Arts in general. Fighting has changed alot since his day but for his time he was good!
  25. Andy Hug was a great fighter for both Kyokushin and kickboxing, his passing was a sad loss for the sport. Anyone know what Pete Cunningham is up to now? or know where I could get a copy of his book?
