yes. several. you won't find many people who teach them though. They have tribal stickfighting arts and also some empty hand arts. None of it is commercial, from what I've seen, with the exception of what is taught by kallindi iiyi.(sp?)

One of the teachers I train with is actually brazilian. The other has relatives there and visits at least once a year. They both say that it was brought over, not developed after they arrived.

I've seen big guys do regional. I am a big guy myself, and I have been training it for about a month now.

Are you a Thug or a Warrior?!

which is fine.... it's a romanticized opinion, but we are all entitled to opinions. The DEFINITION of warrior has already been stated here. -
Help from a confused MA in training
elbows_and_knees replied to Bruce WillPete7's topic in Health and Fitness
stretch daily plyos 2 days per week weight train 2 - 3 days per week skill training daily endurance training 2-3 days per week -
you are talking about two VERY different things. sprinting is explosive - activates the explosive muscle fibers and is largely anaerobic. Distance running activiates the endurance fibers and is completely aerobic. Sprinting will not help your distance running and vice versa. My best advice is time - just keep running and over time your wind will increase. Measure how far you run and try to run a little farther each session.

60 pushups per session isn't really alot. This means that you can either increase the reps or increase the frequency. However, your goal here is time. So first and foremost, you want to be timing yourself to make sure that you crank out the 30 in less than 60 seconds. instead of 30, 20, 10, I would do 30, 30, 30 - rest for several minutes between each set so that you can fully recover and then time each set. I would do the same for the situps. the running portion will be A LOT harder, since you only have one day per week. How soon befor you can get the treadmill? Last thing, I would add some exercises in for other body parts as well, such as the legs and back.

Training Methodology
elbows_and_knees replied to UseoForce's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
we're in agreement for the most part, but I disagree with the two things I quoted. It just so happens that the example of the knifehand is a perfect example of why you NEED to spar, which is why I responded to that one - it's an example of theory vs application. -

graceffo trains everywhere. He is currently in hong kong - he just filmed a movie. -
how would you rate your training
elbows_and_knees replied to white lily's topic in Health and Fitness
spirit is kind of a byproduct of tough training. From a sport fighting perspective, I wouldn't give it it's own category. Also, each person's rating will be different, as different fighters emphasize different things. For example, a slugger is more worried about strength than speed, while an elusive fighter is more worried about speed than strength. Instead of breaking down training, you may want to first break down fighting style, then break down components of each style. fighting styles aggressive defensive tricky elusive NOW, break down the characteristics of each. -
why don't you post yours and let us comment. posting ours may not help, as our goals may be different. Tell me what you are trying to gain from your program, then type out your program.

What to do if your invited to instruct?
elbows_and_knees replied to ronin.74's topic in Instructors and School Owners
they should be though. Actually, you will probably find that any sport fighting coach worth his salt has competed at some point in time. He may not have been good, but he competed. I personally would not train under a coach who had never competed, if my goal was to compete. -
it's possible. Or, the s hook or whatever hook it was mounted on was weak.

What to do if your invited to instruct?
elbows_and_knees replied to ronin.74's topic in Instructors and School Owners
The thing about muay thai is that there really is no certification. In thailand, there is a ceremony to induct new teachers, but outside of thailand, that's not the case. You know what your skill is like. If you truly think you are capable of producing a good quality fighter, then go for it. If not, then don't. Or, you can test yourself. there is no one certification, as I said, but some associations have instructor courses and certs... these things mean absolutely nothing outside of their organization, but they may be what you need to give you an assessment of yourself. master toddy is a good one. adjarn chai sirusute is another. attend some of their seminars and align with what you need to do to get them to test you. When they see where you are, you may have a more clear idea. -
I've seen many injuries in kickboxing. protective gear helps, but it's not 100 %. NOTHING is too dangerous to spar with. if you don't understand your principles to the point where you can modify a technique and still use it, that is not the fault of the style. FWIW, my old longfist instructor also trained hung gar, and he sparred with us.

Why is kumite more important in western karate than kata?
elbows_and_knees replied to Monkeymagic's topic in Karate
no, it's not all attack. as with anything, there are various methods, as people differ in mentality. What you find typically are: agressive defensive elusive tricky what you are depends on your tendencies as a fighter. you can use what you learn in your forms while sparring. the same thing applies. You must make a conscious effort to use it. If you do not, you will likely never use it. If you have to, drill it repeatedly first. After you are comfortable with that, THEN make the effort to add it to your sparring. forgetting things is natural and you will NEVER be able to just spontaneously use it all, but you can use much of it. as for the last part of your question, I've trained traditional styles in the past, so I've done kata before. for example, since you are in bejing, you may have seen kung fu forms that use the "shoot the bow" technique. One of the applications for it is a fireman's carry. You can drill this repeatedly, then work it into sparring. -
Best Karate movie
elbows_and_knees replied to Pogo's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
it's tkd based, but is the "us national karate team" and, isn't everyone on the US team except for tommy a karate exponent? alex, sonny and travis definitely are. I'm not sure about virgil. Team korea is all tkd though. -
more modern style
elbows_and_knees replied to cole's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
I'm at one - it doesn't sound like what he's looking for though. Where I train and teach, there are many different styles taught, all by different teachers - capoeira, kenpo, bjj, judo, thai boxing, wrestling, kali and aikido. We don't mind if people who train one of the other styles comes to our classes, but it sounds like cole is looking for something else. He wants to be shown something that his teacher apparently doesn't think he's ready for yet. -
Chinese Goju
elbows_and_knees replied to Hart's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
considering that the okinawan arts came directly from china, I wouldn't call it too innovative. goju is okinawan, not japanese. -
not true. traditional kickboxing is the older thai style - muay boran. the kickboxing you are referring to is not traditional at all. it is a combination of karate and boxing that allows full contact hits as opposed to light contact. my school is located inside of a kempo school. One of our guys is a black belt in the kempo system. He tells us how easy it is for him to beat them since he started thai boxing. I personally don't consider anything dishonorable. there are things that are illegal, but that doesn't mean they are dishonorable. you have to watch it when you make such broad generalizations. I have that movie on tape. i saw it years ago when it first came out. "I have shown you the dragon, but you have not seen him..."

not true at all. the term "street oriented" is really nonexistant, IMO. If I elbow you in the jaw, I am just as capable of ending the fight as someone who tries to hit an opponent in the throat. people say "we will kick them in the knee, we will eye gouge them, we will hit the throat, etc", which really does not make them more street oriented at all. it merely means you have a different tactic. I elbow the jaw, punch the liver, etc. it's just as "street effective", if not more so, because I am not only hitting larger targets, but I am able to do so in practice in most cases, which you are not.

What exactly do you base that opinion on? That is a VERY broad generalization...
