What I've seen of clf doesn't resemble western boxing at all - the swinging techniques I've seen are WAY wider than textbook boxing punches. Different footwork too. Thai boxing systems, whether they are old, new, etc, etc. all of the elbows you saw were muay thai elbows. most people have only seen the upward, downward and cross elbows. Not many know of the stabbing, spinning, rear, jumping etc. Same with knees. people don't know about the jumping, spinning, half, slapping, etc. variations. it doesn't look like kung fu to me. It simply looks more traditional.

winning isn't the point - perfecting his strategy is. After all, you fight how you train. you won't learn more by having fun - you will learn more by picking something to focus on and working it - whether you win or lose.

If I'm not mistaken, the closed fist is allowed in pancrase now.

Actually, what he's talking about is very effective. I think you are misunderstanding what he's saying - you may just need to see it.

It will surprise him t the first time , after that , he won't be surprised , I think the only way to overcome him is by becoming a good infighter , work on that . I wouldn't advise that unless he's already a good infighter. What he wants to do is make the guy fight his fight, not fight the other guy's fight. If he tries to infight with the guy, he will get mauled, unless he's got a good infighting game. How different would the tyson - lewis match had been if lewis tried to infight with tyson? He woulda gotten smoked. But he was smart - he kept tyson on the outside, where he could pick him apart - lewis made him fight his fight.

We are in a similar boat. I'm out of school, but work two jobs - I am a bouncer by night and a web developer by day. I still find time to train 5 - 6 days a week though and compete when I get a chance. since I like to compete, I know that I must make time to train for it. I hit the gym on my lunch breaks, train 4 days per week and work out and train with 2 private students I have 2 days per week. competition drives us to train harder; it's the nature of the beast.

Public schools + MA classes = ???

my capoeira instructor teaches at several local middle schools. As I'm not the one teaching tho, I dunno what issues he may have had. -
Sharing MA school space
elbows_and_knees replied to trustkid1's topic in Instructors and School Owners
go for it. Our school is the ultimate sharing space. We have: bjj judo submission wrestling kenpo aikido capoeira muay thai kali All taught by different instructors, all under the same roof. It's great. -
everyone assumes that you want to hold or submit in a streetfight... this is NOT the case. If you do take the fight to the ground, you don't submit them - you snap their limb. The idea isn't to go to the ground (take some bjj self defense and you will see this) but to be able to finish quickly and get up efficiently if you DO happed to go to the ground.

agreed. The "kick em in the nuts" guy told me he didn't want to hurt me, when I told him we could spar, but he was welcome to strike both my throat and groin. Another told me that he can only fight at his best when his life is in danger.

Today, we see who trains hardest. In the initial competitions, we saw which worked best when one wasn't prepared for the other. a grappler with no striking training vs a striker with no grappling training. The grapplers proved that it's easier than most people think it is to take a person down. Doesn't mean it's the best, but it opened the eyes of the general public to some things.

look at the uppoer torso. You will be able to see his arms and legs via your peripheral vision. When you look only at the eyes, it's easy to lose track of the legs. In time, you will learn to read their shoulder and hip movement in order to determine what is coming. When boxing against a taller guy, remember mike tyson in his prime... He was a master at making angles. He would slip inside of the other guy and eat their lunch with his body shots and uppercuts. slip and make angles. Fast head movement and footwork. There really is no best defense - everyone has their own preference. There is a worst defense though - NEVER move continually backward.
-
that goes both ways. I literally meet TMA all the time that say things like "I will never go to the ground, so I don't need grappling" and "boxers have no skill - they just stand there and slug each other" When I heard them say this, I just laughed. One has also told me "In a real fight, all you have to do is hit them in the throat or kick them in the nuts" - as if it's that easy.
-
you are dealing with what we call an infighter. you're gonna have to use your footwork against him. That, and make him not want to come into you. You CANNOT simply move backward - he will catch you every time. you have to sidestep him as well. use your long weapons - jab, lead leg front kick, etc. to make him keep his distance. he can only come in if you let him. When he does get inside, unleash a flurry of punches - make him not want to come inside anymore.

Wing Tsun vs...
elbows_and_knees replied to dippedappe's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
No, you don't. That is only one way of generating power. Other than stepping into the punch, what is there that can compare? coiling. -
Not because they work, but because they CAN work - nothing is absolute. This is why you will find XMA guys out there who could beat TMA. At the core of what they do is the same basic technique that TMA learn. The problem with XMA isn't the flash, but the training method - they ONLY train for XMA related competitions and such. I bet I could take an XMA guy, train him for the ring and he'd hold his own, using his techniques. They key is in the training method, not in the style.

even if UFC were like that, the results would be similar, I'm willing to bet.
