Where are martial arts values?
OldRookie replied to three60roundhouse's topic in Instructors and School Owners
IMHO-if you quit after acheiving your black belt, you are not looking at the big picture. I feel that martial arts are a learning process that does not end-unless you choose to end it. There is always something to learn & I find it difficult to understand how a person can put in time, effort, sweat & of course $$ to just a certain point in their training and say,"O.K.-I finally got my blackbelt-guess I'm done...." Myself-I am in this for the duration & just set short range goals & once they are acheived, move on to the next. I am confident that I will have my blackbelt one day but-will still have tons to learn! -
All Martial Artists listen up!

KickChick- a big to your sites you posted! I go to webshots all the time as they have such a huge amount to pick from,& I change my wallpaper every couple of days!(Get bored with it looking the same....) -
I have books that I have started & simply have not had the time to read....just about anything by Tom Clancy I like-& Steven King some of his stuff is very good for a late night read. *On the Fight Club book;isn't true that its always better on paper?......I don't think I can recall a single book made into a film where the film was par to the written work--IMHO {of course}

Age and when you began
OldRookie replied to rabid hamster's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I like that "Never too old" statement Sai-lol-I am an ancient 42 & just started my TKD in Feb. I too started classes at about 18 but was more interested in running the roads & chasing girls to devote any time or serious effort to MA. Funny how things change after a few birthdays... -
Just tested Saturday & will recieve my yellow belt this Friday night. Choong Sil Tae kwon-Do. We also work a lot of Aikido techniques when training self defense & I can't wait to start sparring. Our belt system is white, yellow, green, purple, blue, brown, red & black with Jr. & Sr. in all belts until black of course. Tessone-wish I had time to put in 4 days a week at the dojang!

Good Luck Sabra- I started to just drop 10lbs & had a bet with the wife on who could lose it first--I won but actually dropped 15 lbs & think I will try to skim off about 5 more before heading to Florida in June. Keep your goal in mind & stay motivated!

Yep-it would be great.....I usually run across a creative forms or a breaking comp once in a blue moon but it is usually only lasts 30 mins! ESPN runs it at night like a filler between other programs! It would be nice to see at least an hour long broadcast on ESPN or ESPN2,they show some pretty outlandish crap that couldn't possibly have as large an audience draw as MA---lumberjacks competing to see which guy can cut through a log with a chainsaw the fastest?!!....Yeah-that involves a lot of training & skill

Any OTHER MA you would like to learn?.....
OldRookie replied to OldRookie's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Angus-you've found the time to train in all those styles?!!! -When do you sleep?..lol -
We all believe our own sytem/style is the best (of course) but what other MA would you like to learn if you had the time & $$? I would love to learn Hapkido! I had a small brush with it years ago with a former instructor. It is geared more to actual self defense and covers many effective techniques-throws,locks,chokes along with kicks & punching. Plus-there are no forms to learn! Kick boxing also-unfortunately, we have only TKD schools here in my little town & one Shotokan school.

Bo staff. Not near as cool looking or flashy as most other weapons but I figure in a pinch I could probably improvise one if it came down to it...eg;pool cue, broom stick,et..

Favorite Martial Arts Movie
OldRookie replied to Chris from CT's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
I have recently started buying Bruce Lee's films when I can find them on DVD. Of course Enter the Dragon is at the top of my list, and if you can get past the horrible voice dubbing-The Chinese Connection has great fight scenes. -

I have been stretching every day for about the past 2 months & man my calves always feel as though they are the brink of cramping and- quite often do. I know about extra pottasium to help prevent cramps at night but I am wondering if my old carcass is going to adjust to stretching, or is it "normal" to keep having these "charlie horses"...?

Good pics Ram....also.the latest Jet Li film on DVD "The One",has a good showdown with the "good" Jet VS the "bad" Jet. Yeah, it has a tons of wire work & CG-not true one-on-one fight scenes like the old days but its still pretty cool. -
Hope you guys don't mind if I jump in here--superfoots.com, Bill Wallace's online store has competitive prices & very low shipping charges. Check 'em & see..(no- I don't work for them..)
