Do you kick to the head?
OldRookie replied to koreantiger81's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
We can kick to the head but no punches-for tourney's anyway. We mix up our sparring quite a bit & practice real world encounters & then with protective gear we do punch to the old mellon. We also work on groundfighting a bit & utilize chokes-to a certain degree. You don't let up until they tap. Getting ready for tournaments however,we have to play by the rules{{{..yawn}}}and only go to the head with kicks. -
Patrick-Arrrghh! I did it again! Sorry....I went from checking the pics in the photo album- to then logging in- to loading a pic & I dropped it in the wrong category. I see now after I log in even if I am on the celeb page & then log in it kicks me back to the 1st page for KF members pics ~@%&*#+!...Du-u-u-uh....(remember I am a just a product of the Texas public school system)...

IDEAL KUNG FU STYLE
OldRookie replied to MAVERICK's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
I myself have never trained in any style of Kung Fu but I would love to.....All the articles & info I have read points to White Eyebrow as one of the most balanced styles-but apparently is quite rare so I would go with Wing Chun. We now have an instuctor of Lung shou pai (dragon claw) kung fu working out at our TKD school & during sparring I could see no diff in his technique.... The way he put it-a kick is a kick & a punch is a punch no matter what the style. -
Patrick-guess my pick I uploaded needs to be moved. I don't think Cythia Rothrock is a member...or--is she?... I thought it would load to the celeb/misc page as that is what I was on when I loaded the pic.. ~~Thanks

Hey Monk-we usually start at what we call level 1 & that is no touching. Then after a minute we move up to level 2-light contact & so on. Saturday at my sparring class I broke a buddy of mine's nose with an elbow. I really felt bad;we were in close & my L elbow caught him & I heard it pop. Purely an accident but it still sucked. Our instructor just said-"It happens,we all know theres a chance of that when we step in here."......I still felt bad for him though....in that incident the pads didn't affect the outcome either way-maybe if he had on his headgear...

The Martial art movie stars
OldRookie replied to Nickgarren's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
Jet Li's very fast; also Donnie Yen is awsome though not well known here. He has done tons of films in Hong Kong,Thailand,ect..He trained at the same school in Wushu as Jet. Chuck Norris-he's up in his 50's now but I wouldn't mess with him. Richard Norton:starred with Cynthia Rothrock in a lot of "B" kung fu films in the '90s-had a lot of talent--at least on the screen. -
\\These are all planned for release in 2003 or later.//The remake of the 1971 classic Billy Jack sometime next year-no leads picked last time I checked.... Of course, Rush Hour 3 with the originals re- cast. How about this, Precious Sword,Golden Hairpin- I thought it was a joke at first but it is actually a prequel to Crouching Tiger......here is one I have been hoping for for quite some time--a yet untitled film with ((insert drumroll..)) Jackie Chan & Jet Li! From Colombia pictures described as an action comedy "rumored" to be a loose remake of Midnight Run.

Sorry guys, but I could care less if they were to strike {{yawn......}}...I prefer watching highly expensive tweaked out cars make left turns all afternoon at 180mph-thats right,NASCAR! At least the drivers risk more than a pulled hamstring to get their big payday! Regretably, I cannot lend a sympathetic ear to those poor, unfortunate souls that are paid millions to play a kids game.

What are your Sparring classes like?
OldRookie replied to koreantiger81's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
We do many of the mentioned at my Dojang; multiple attacks, using only hands or only feet & our instructor really emphasizes using the front leg 99% of the time. If your seen using a back leg, for say- a round kick, you hit the mat for 20 pushups each time. This usually works especially well with kids when the throwing a turning kick & after a few sets the start remembering to kick with the lead leg. I am guilty of this also as my R side is the strong side & I just naturally want to bring that back leg in from way back in the outfield-especially with round kicks. -
https://www.bubishi.com/resources/2manylinks--or just bubishi.com on Google or any search engine should pull it up. Over 3600 links,a little bit of everything from personal MA webpages to schools,MA merchandise, books just about anything MA related. I found a few dead links the other night but with that many, maybe you can find what you are looking for.

-now to go hunt down some elusive "Food of the Gods", get rid of some stress, lower my cholesterol, & I'll just cancel my dental check up & eat more chocolate!! -Of course, the sweet stuff I knew would make the list but I am doing the low carb/high protein thing so pretty much most "normal" foods are off my list .....never thought would miss bread so much... =[[[think there is still part of a milk chocolate Easter bunny in the fridge]]]

I have this secret addiction to chocolate so I try not to have any in the house. But-you have kids,your gonna' have cookies & when chocolate chip cookies are fresh out of the oven all soft & gooey--my willpower breaks like a 1" pine board! {I just thought of this topic the other day when I was chowing down on a southern delicacy-fried chicken livers. Battered & deep fried organ meat-yumm. I could hear my arteries clogging with each bite -so good,and yet so-o-o bad for you!}

Plus, I have always stayed in shape & have a been a regular gym rat for years. \\Tested for my green belt on Saturday & we have the awards ceremony this Friday night-Yeehaaaw!// -

old kung fu movies
OldRookie replied to sentry's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
OK-I know 7 Samauri is not actually a Kung Fu flick...but its still worth a look is you haven't seen it. Of the 70's.....I would have to go with The Chinese Connection & Return of the Dragon. Again they are classics, but not like "Monkey Fist of Drunken Fury VS Eagle Claw Death Zombies".. -

Ninjutsu and Krav Maga
OldRookie replied to lbouchet's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
Good answer LeaF! I have doing a little online research on Krav Maga myself as it is pretty unheard of in my little redneck town! -
The electric smoker!! 8th Wonder of the World!!! Plug it in-add a handfull of hickory or mesquite chips in the bottom around the element, fill up the pan with water & throw the meat on the rack! No turning -no basting, put the lid on it & forget it for the afternoon! I use my grill quite often also but when it comes the kitchen, thats definately my wifes "zone". Our agreement is she has complete, absolute power over the kitchen & I get to be commander in chief of the remote control for the bigscreen.......works for me..

Omnifinite stated good logic. Just last night at my TKD class as we were covering self defense, our instructor told us to "Do what you have to do to take him out quick". He told a story of an "altercation" at a park with a guy & several of his buddies. Things heated up & he knew it was fixing to hit the fan so he struck first with an inverted side kick. Striking downward on the outside of this unlucky fellows knee he broke his leg & the sound of the bone snapping & this guy's scream pretty much ended everything. He is not a braggart & doesn't walk around with his chest swelled out. He also told us if you put the attacker down-then you leave, quickly! I believe whatever MA (technique) you are skilled at--use it. One of our instructors favorite techniques if you are grabbed from the front is ramming a thumb in the eye of your attacker! Simple & effective. By the way, most of our self defense techniques are Aikido. A friend of mine at the Dojang (a greenbelt)works as a bouncer at local bar/poolhall a was pleasantly surprised how he snapped a wristlock on a guy & had him on the floor & said, "I did it without even thinking about it."
