  1. Well, there are many levels of success, based on your goals. However I think for most full time school owners, its being financialy independent and being able to provide for your family...ie-a successful career while doing what you love. However for those school owners on a part time basis just wanting to teach a gifted few, then my opinions and definition of success would not apply.
  2. Just because you cant beat somebody up with a flip doesnt mean anything. The skill and sheer athleticism it takes to do XMA makes a faster, more flexile, more coordinated, and stronger athlete. All of which are useful in fighting. open your mind to all avenues of training. Do you think Bruce Lee was an avid runner because he could use it in a fight? Or because the by product of the running (conditioning, endurnce, speed) was useful in his training for fighting?
  3. "when did students start getting a say in class activities?" are you serious? You say that to most MA businessmen and they will laugh. when they started paying your salarie. Its not about the instructors ego. Its about having a successful scool and being a better instructor. You can be "hard core" all you want, but until you learn students are there to learn and have fun doing it, then kids will continue to quit.
  4. I agree you have to change the repitition. It cant just be the same drill over and over. there are many ways to exercise a technique and each should isolate a different component of the tech(the preparation, direction, execution, reload etc.). I think different drills also help the student understand the tech. better. I also explain the tech, when I see boredom, then demonstrate, and go to repitition again, or a different drill. I agree kids nowdays lack in the "Work ethic" thing. But also, all of us are instrctors we cant hold every kid to the same standard as us when we were young. Variation of the same thing is the key.
  5. no or low cost marketing; flyers on post-it-notes to stick on car windows.People take them and stick them in pockets,dashboards-to be found again and again. People keep them for some reason, plus they stick to anyting, and dont harm anything. Newspaper INSERTS, as well as ads. VIP-stand outside local shopping area and say "hello my name is,I teach at, here is a free 30 day pass" give 30 day pass card.(I dont like this, its kind of gorilla) Buddy days-have students bring a buddy to a moch class at a set time. Have welcome buddy signs so they know this day (time) is for them(some have screen printed buddy day shirts to give before class) after class pass out headbands and x-many days free. TRY TO MAKE IT STANDARD THAT BUDDY PARENT WATCHES. apartments-offer to hand out apartment newsletter if they let you insert your flyer. schools- give every student a paper that "ok's" them to test with parent and teacher comment area and signature. Under teacher sigature include that you often like to share in your students school activites and would love to come and talk to the class about (MA,stranger danger, lifeskills, etc.) The teacher will select from your listed topics. Make sure doinclde a DATE and TIME so the teacher makes the appointment right there. You call and confirm. You would not believe how many of these you will get back wanting you to come and talk. Of course hand out flyers to the class and invite them. This also keeps an eye on your students at school and both parent/teachr appreciate it. Offer each new student a certain reward if they bring a friend to class. Once one has that special (star or whatever) every kid will want it. Take your students out in uniform to the public. Parks, beaches workouts/testings, or just to mcdonalds as an award. This stirs up recognition plus its a retention builder. sell a lot of personalized apperl at cost. T-shirts,polos,workout/lounge pants, everything. make them "profesional looking" not "kiddie looking" and make them stylish. Even give some polos and shirts away to your most dedicated people. They are now walking advertisments in appearance as well as speech. Thats my no or low cost education (i say that because they are not my ideas only ideas taught to me). Hope it helps you.
  6. MM Artists are NOT the best fighters. The only thing that gives the UFC creditability is BJJ. Without it they are just upper level amateur strikers. as far as Bruce Lee goes, he would destroy them. Have you forgotten the feats of strength and technique he did? he could side kick a heavy bag and slap it against the ceiling! I gurrantee nobody has matced Bruces training schedule today.
  7. Hey, thanks for the info. I guess a back kick is more powerful, but I think a lead leg side kick is as powerful as a rear leg rk. and in my case its faster too. I think the judges should score such kicks. Where do I find regional tournaents/ The USA TKD site has only pan am, natl. qual., etc.
  8. first a little background; ok, Ive been taking TKD for 21 yrs (im 27). Im a school owner (new school). I am transfering orgs. and would like some help from USTU people. 1. the side kick is the most powerful in TKD. Why in sparring do you guys take almost a front facing sparring stance thats completly vunerable to a side kick? Why in turn is the side kick never thrown? 2. is the rounds 3 min. for all competitions, no matter how many times you fight in one single elimination tourn? 3.If I kick someone in the face with my bare foot and they bleed or break their nose, will the match continue? 4. does USTU have weapons and forms creative competitions, or traditional? 5.last one, should I start my competiting at like an AAU tourn or something instead of a National Qualifier? Thanks.
