You got it right. In a bag, to and from training. As long as they're in something, you're okay. You don't need to worry about a case in a bag. I think you're supposed to have a license to buy them, but i've been to places that don't ask. i could be wrong though.

I don't have problems at the moment, but a mate of mine got done for defending himself with a d-lock against 5 chavs who were trying to jump him. 1 of the chavs had a knife, but didn't use it. My mate got arrested because he hit 2 of the chavs over the head with the lock, after they started hitting him. I can only assume that the Police thought that didn't constitute reasonable force.

Speaking as a UK school employee, dude, you will probably get expelled. Regardless of provocation, if you take a chair leg to another kid, you will face severe consequences. If you've got problems, i know it isn't 'cool', but speak to a member of staff.

My brother-in-law did MMA in the '70s, involving karate, kung-fu and kick-boxing, and he's told me he had to register. I've no reason to suspect him of lying. Unless it was a club registration for insurance or something not quite as romantic and the years have addled his brain. *shrugs*

Just curious. I know it's not strictly a martial arts weapon, but it's something I have always enjoyed doing. Seems a bit more civilised than a rifle.

*Normal* nunchuka aren't "illegal". You just can't carry them on the street unless your are travelling to or from your place of training. And I think they have to be concealed. *shrugs* I assume since kids can buy that sort of thing in toy shops that it's not a problem. I remember when those bloody turtles were all the rage, you could buy scary toys....

It's a great book. Very, very, informative. I don't think he tries to discredit Funakoshi, but explains why things may have happened a certain way, especially when you consider the politics of the time, and how the Japanese work as a culture (I found the bit about real truth and official truth fascinating).

It was a private seminar for members of my club. Well worth it. We concentrated on hip movement and how to step forewards correctly. Also, movement of the rear hand. Heian shodan in mirror image, that was intersting... sorry i didn't see this till afterwards, so i couldn't pass your address on.

I'm been learning shotokan for about 6 months, and have been given an invitation to a seminar with David Hooper. I've read some of his articles, and he seems to be a "spend two hours on hip rotation during choku tsuki", which is fine, I just want to know what to expect; obviously i'm a little nervous because i'm 'new'.

we all train together. there are a few 'advanced' classes for brown belts and up (and any one who can handle the pace), and that's regardless of age too. I sparred with a 7 year old the other day, he barely reached my waist, but boydid he come at me. To be fair, I could have flattened him with a kick to the face, but that doesn't mean I can't take his height into consideration, drop my stances, and learn something from him.

From Beginner to Black Belt by Gursharan Sahota [sic] I find the sequence pictures useful for remembering what techniques there are in a kata, i wouldn't use them for actually learning them though.

thanks for the replies; i eventually found a labelled diagram of the think on the korean flag in a feng shui book, there's some duplications like water and lake, but i'll figure something out.

I was actually looking for a description and comment on the roundhouse, as i was taught it yesterday, and was shown to lift the leg perpendicular to the hip, with the foot tucked it towards bum, pivot round and then kick out head height, which seemed terribly inefficient to me, although being a beginner i'm a lot slower and more clumsy than my sensei. Do you (or anyone else) have any comments?

Although the kicks I've learned (from JKD and Thai) don't chamber, I have to agree that it's better to chamber the front roundhouse.

Have not long started Karate, and have heard people on the dojo responding os/us to certain things, what does it mean, and when should i say it?

I am creating a kata/practice area in my new garden, and I am planning on having a circular slab at the centre, with concentric rings around broken up in a fashion similar to the korean flag (but pefectly circular) I was planning on having a pillar at 'corners', each with something on top, perhaps representing the four elements, fire, water, earth and wind. But I want to keep the meaning and representation true, rather than just being bits of mythology that have been mashed together. Does anyone have any ideas, opinions?

Thanks for the replies... After the first week, I went to Gedan Berai [sp?] at home to practice and it hurt every muscle in my body...... ....2nd week wasn't so bad.

I've been to two karate lessons so far, and i'm so out of shape it isn't funny..... I've started cycling a couple of miles once or twice a week, but what can I do in terms of flexibillity and fat loss?

I have just started a beginners course at a local club, they call it shotokan karate, and the front of my membership book says minakami bushido karate dojo. On Minakami's Website, it says he teaches Shitoryu karate. What do all these terms mean? What style am I learning? Why are there hundreds of Governing bodies? Thanks.
