  1. I got attacked by a gang of about 8 or so people....nocked to the ground and kicked for a while. I never even had a chance to throw a punch. Does that count for a fight? Only fight ive ever been in...but its what caused me to take up Kung Fu, so its all good
  2. I agree with what your saying and understand. However, in my Kung Fu, most of our strikes require us to use our shoulders (and hips) in a twisting motion alot, and with our shoulders up, we lose alot of speed and power. Also to the defence part, it makes sense. But again, in my experience (in my Kung Fu) where our hands are positioned easily defend the face and theres no need for our shoulders to be shrugged. Ive tried having my shoulders up, i dont like it, i feel tense, slow and hindered. So lets just say it works for some but it doesnt for others
  3. Sorry, but thats totally wrong. Your sloulders should always be relaxed and down. You will lose so much power and speed if theyre up.
  4. Dont know where you got that from. An extract from the website: "Lau Kune (also termed Lau Kuen, Lam Gar Lau Kuen & Lam Gar), founded around 1880-1890, is a traditional close range Southern Chinese Kung Fu System. Lau means Flowing, Adapting, Changing, Flexible and so on. Kune means fist or boxing (that is empty handed fighting). Lau Kune - Flowing Fist or Adapting Fist" So if you want to take the full name its Lam family Flowing Fist Kung fu.
  5. Greetings everyone. Im just wondering if anyone else has heard of or is studying Lau Kune Kung Fu. I study it, and i have my own opinions, however im just trying to see what the general view from everyone else is of it. Because from browsing these forums i havnt seen anything about it. So tell me what you think of the art! Anyones experience either practicing it / viewing it is very welcome also The webpage for where i train can be viewed here: http://yeeyongtong.ntn.com.au/ Thanks Dane.
  6. Your back must always be straight!!! When you have a straight back, your whole body is aligned, and you will produce alot more power and have better balance.
  7. Excuse my ignorance but im assuming that a ridgehand is where the fingers are held straight and you hit with the side of your hand. For all those people using ridgehands, try this: Just before you hit something tense your hand into a fist. (ie. like a hammerfist) this sudden switch from a relaxed state (which will give you incredible speed) to a clenched fist (will give you awesome "whipping power") will make your attack just as hard, if not harder than hitting someone with your knuckles. Think of hitting someone with a hammer, as opposed to jabbing them with it. A clenched hand using the same technique the same as a ridgehand is alot harder, try it if your skeptical. Palm heel strikes: If you hit them with the right part of your palm, you should not injure your hand as you are using the full force of your forearm bone. An argument against hitting with a closed fist (for beginners) Any of you who do not have super conditioned nuckles, go to a brick wall and hit it as hard as you can with a) your nuckles and then b) your open hand. I gurantee that because you know the brick wall isnt going to give, you will hit less hard with your nuckles (to protect them) as opposed to your open hand, because you are hitting with somewhat softer tissue (but when you condition it, it becomes just as hard as nuckles). So therefore, you will effectively produce a better strike from a open palm as opposed to a closed fist using nuckles. Just a little food for thought Dane.
  8. NWOBHM doesnt stand for that. It stands for New Wave Of Brittish Heavy Metal Just thought i'd point that out BTW: My fav bands are HIM, Korn, Metallica, Pantera, Slipknot and Ministry of Sound
  9. Technique. Using your whole body, not just your arms to give you power. Anything that strengthens your triceps will help too.
  10. my sifu and i are friends...but i show the upmost respect for him when we are training.
  11. Our uniform is considered street clothes. Long plack pants, white polo shirt....shoes optional. We train outside also.
  12. Lau Kune Kung Fu http://yeeyongtong.ntn.com.au/ if you would like to know more
  13. Kung Fu Fan. Simple, effective or Twin Machette / Butterfly knives
  14. I agree aswell. REAL Tai Chi is a complete art. Therefore it combines everything, striking, grappeling, locks etc... No need for cross training.
  15. Something simple you can do if you have to resort to violence. Just kick him in the groin, sounds childish....but its effective. If its at school he will get laughed at for sure. And if he gives you crap for kicking him in the balls, do it again. Just make sure (if your still at school) you go and tell a teacher or counseller straight away that you did it, why you did it and that you had not other option. With your history i doubt you will get into trouble...especially if you mention the term "legal action for failing to provide a safe and harassment free schooling"
  16. Are you talking about structurial training with pushing hands... I.e. training your stance by not getting moved by force, using your waist to 'coil up' and unleash power, sensitivity training and all that??
  17. Exactly! Something like having a square body, feet shoulder width apart, one foot slightly forward, weith 50-50, both hands (with palms facing out) infront of your body just above chest height, elbows in is perfect. (very natural looking, which is what im going for) Even saying "hey buddy, i dont want any trouble" is perfect. Its very non threataning and can catch alot of people off guard, and its great to defend blows from. This is of course if you get the chance to take a stance or whatever. Most fights dont start like "hey you, lets fight...take your stance". There usually isnt much time to think of what your going to do, you just need to do it. Dane. Remember, Never fight! But if you have to, don't stop.
