Well i had just got the operation about almost 2 weeks ago. Doctor told me no weight on my leg until 4-6 weeks. Anyways my question is, looking at my leg it still seems alittle puffy and of course it doesnt straighten completly proberly due to the swelling. Is this normal. Did you guys heal quicker. What execrise did you do(Rehabilation). Just in case you dont know i had a meniscus repair NOT removal(I'm only 22). -Thanks

cant say that i had a problem like that but i do have a ligament problem in my knee. I give it rest and relexation. Maybe thats what you should do. If you still want to go to class, just take it easy dont go hard. And very important..talk to you instructor and/or doctor. -Michael

We all heard of the JKA organization and whatever horrible dealings they had with other people. But now i want an honest opinon from you guys about the organization. Did you have dealings with them? Were they that ignorant? Truth is, i am JKA also but on one side of the coin i understand our reasons for being the "best" when it comes to shotokan but on the other hand we have no character. -Your friend in the arts, Mike

Sport, street fighting, and personal growth....

i do agree with most of the article except the part where he talks about sport techiniques can be used for street defense. I dont really need to go in depth for that one but in terms of sport karate, not judo or juijitsu, i dont really think you can use techniques in such defense situations. I dont think you can ever use it except in the ring. Look regardless if its judo or karate sport it doesn't matter a street fight will always be unpreditable and how many "black belts" have fallen to a street attacker. But the article was a good read and i do agree with most of the answers. -
HOW...How does 90% percent of fights end up on the ground...who conducts these surveys..So my fights are all standing up..never went to the ground yet...should i say that 90% of fights dont go to the ground. I apprecitate opinions but come on..base it on some fact. dont base it on a UFC champion winning using juijutsu which did happen in the early 90's and all of a sudden everyone said that all fights end up on the ground. Lets be real here.

A Couple of points i want you to reconsider. 1. Yes Funakoshi did alot of kata's..and your point...so did Master Azato and Itsou. Just cause you do kata doesnt mean you cant fight. Also look at the teachers he trained with. Azato, Itsou, Matsurmura..legendery at their time. 2. Actually it was Itsou hes teacher who made karate into a public school event 3. It was Funakoshi's stundents (Nakyama, Kanazawa etc.) who made karate into a "sport". If anything Funakoshi was against the idea. 4. If you read the book carefully he points out another incident in which he took on 6 guys by himself...which story?? the story discussing about pride. When funakoshi was involved in a arm wrestling game..........read that story again and very carefully. 5. Most definetly look at his son. One of the greatest karateka who died before his time.

well look at it this way..All the great past karateka such as Funakoshi, Oyama, Masturma, Nakayama, Kanazawa, etc. all trained with kata as thier base. Of course they did sparring (pre-arranged and bunkai). It wasnt until after Funakoshi's death that sparring became a principal method to train(At least in the J.K.A.). Basically its like this, all the great masters did kata and thats why they are masters. Now i ask you. If kata "sucks" then why did they do it. Why not fight all the time? Why does every ancient fighting style dating back to Africa has some tpye of kata? Maybe there is something to it? And dont give the standered answer that "its to pass on knowledge" which it is, but theres more............

Is it nessecarry to have free sparring in order to learn how to fight. You can have basics, kata, and pre-arranged kumite and of course kumite taken from the kata and applied to self-defense. But is free sparring nesscarry and does it produce better fighting ability than people who dont do it. Thank you

A couple of months ago i meant a J.K.A. yondan and he has helped my karate a hell of alot. He has opened my eyes to alot of things mainly making my kata sharper and techiniques more accurate. One of the things he said to me once was that if i study shotokan outside the J.K.A. it is not real shotokan. Not the one funakoshi has in Khyon or best karate series. I study under my sensai who studied under Thomas LaPuppet. Is he right. Granted there are changes in parts of the kata but are generally the same. Please someone give me some piece of mind about this. Thanks

Maybe its time to re-evalutate your friendship. If it costs you something you love regardless if its a girl maybe it isnt totally worth having..your choice in the end
