  2. Is there no one else in Calgary here? =( hum... well i'll be around if ya need me for anything and if you have advise or anything to share with me it'd be appreciated.
  3. welcome to KF, you'll love it here!
  4. Bolo has alot of films, and i mean a lot! i only have a few; Breathing fire, fist of fury, legend of the 8 samerai, streetfighter, fist of fury; touch of death, Young tiger 2, the Tatoo Connection, Blood fight, and Fearless hyena, i think i have more but can't think of the off hand. it's just good to see him. lol but he's great in movies, i really enjoy them. even if he's not doing much but building to the 'tough' atmosphere. bolo is not his real name btw. people just call him that because of the movie "Bolo" i haven't seen it yet, still looking for it on dvd. from what i can remember, he pratices Tai Chi, and something else. it may very well be shotokan. there is tons of stuff on him on line, just look it up eh.
  5. I think it's ok to pursue someone you like. just make sure to me aware or the dangers. Not everything works out the way you'd hope. I think it's ok for teachers and students to date aslong as it's respectful and goes un-noticed, and there's no politics infecting the dojo. The students are the ones i'd incourge to hook-up in the matter or fun and joyous fulliment in they're lives, the motivation of training together is a huge plus. Much to talk about after class, and things to do together outside of the dojo. In the situation of the relationship going sour, well, then it's a test of character and disipline. Dont be a fool. Be respectful. Still be attenitive and learn to stay patient and accepting of people. But dont let them walk all over you either. I had a great time while with someone at my dojo! Loved every minuite of it. though when it was over, there was no chance for us to be in class together anymore and there was no chance to see how it would have gone. i know that I'd be fine and still be 100% satisfied in class. but as for him, i'm not so sure, i'd imagine that it'd not effect him much either. but it's not assistive to our situation and i do not know for sure. I'd definatly do it again if the opportunity arises. And incourage it in the dojo aslong as it's a good connection with good people that i know are mindful.
  6. I thought he made up or had his own style and called it after him or something, if so then it's probably a mix of different things to look good in the movie...
  7. Ah yes, Sonny Chiba. I have some of his movies, they are very good. i have the Streetfighter series, includuing Sister Streetfighter, Legend of the 8 Samerai, and Kill Bill Vol. 1. take a look at some of his movies ... https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0002002 Did you know he has a movie called The Vigilante in the Funky Hat?! lol

There's practically everything in Calgary. i just can't decide which to try or where to go. almost any possible style is available to what i've seen. I've been looking around and found '1' goju school in the city, probably go there when i can afford it. though if it doesn't work out for whatever reason i'd have to start a new practice. i think i'd like tang soo do, or shorin ryu or kempo or just go to TWD...
  9. I completely agree on that one goju_boi. Ong-bak was an awsome movie, saw it in the theatres and now own it on dvd.
  10. i had to say it didn't help nor hurt. i could see that some kids would have liked the movie and were inspired to practice karate, and who knows how it was carried out. but i could also see people who already pratice karate would be a little disapionted to see that it was a fake and was a poor attempt, or that the actors were just that... 'actors' and didn't seem to be too in depth in martial arts. I liked it, still like it, but it didnt' impact me too much on this matter. I just like movies.
  11. guilty! Thinking about training with a master seclusive and isolated (like the movies) and being happy for the rest of your life there!! I get really sad once i realize it wont happen Really it'd be the best thing that'd happen to me!!

i stopped at senior yellow at my dojo. unfortunatly i have to start new after i've moved. Full contact sparring is mostly for the guys. i wouldn't mind, probably love it! but couldn't see practicing all the time in full contact. i liked it just as it was at my old dojo *tear

yes, it's a very simple kata. but it's the basics involved within it that's what i like for good training. staying in 'proper' shiko dachi the whole time, not rushing through, and not changing levels when taking a step...just goes for a good work out and training with the perfecting techniques. does anyone else agree with me? I believe that kata is my favorite training in karate. though sparring is really fun! and self-defence is vital for street. i have not been able to learn different kata's other than geki sai dai ichi, and ni. (and taikyokogeden) I have no desire to go further yet. there's always something more to learn, i do not know everything yet and am not yet satisfied.
  15. well, we are human...but i try not to forget things as a manner of self disapline, respect for myself and others and a matter of routine to help with other aspects of life and always remembering important things. i have come close to almost getting to class and realizing i've left something behind. usually it's because it's not right in front of my face from my usual preparings. (so it's not forgotten) nevertheless, it happens. But i go early enough that there is enough time to go back for whatever i need. never forget my belt though, it's always with my gi, and can't forget my gi, it's part of karate. i love it too much to forget anyway. i may forget to wash it before class but not to bring it. i have forgotten like june1 said; a sports bra if i had to pack for the whole days worth of stuff in the morning, or a last minuite change of plans. like i said, we're only human. Do your best to respect your school and be mindful of things that are nessesary. Though my sensei would send the people who actually have forgotten their uniform or belt to the begining rank of the students, even if they're a high belt, they still go to the end. Not too sure what he does with the kids when this happens, so i couldn't say. As for doing extra push-ups and crunches; that'd be only if you are late to class. there are some good people at my dojo and are willing to lend out an extra gi or belt. oh, come to think of it i've gone to class unexpected, and waiting for my uniform to be delivered by a fellow classmate, who was late. i waited till he got there and we were both late. but at least i was not late AND without a gi. Oh, and come to think of it i have forgotten my mouthpeice before, though we don't spar everyday, i've learned to make it an everyday nessesity.

I personally liked taikyoku gedan. it helped with my shiko dachi and the disapline of staying low the whole time. i love the burn. good training. i learned this kata the last few classes while i was still at my dojo. then of i believe there's other's to it, as instead of low block it'd be high or middle block. but didn't get much into that.

well, i'm not sure. i'd ask my sensei but i'm not at my dojo anymore. though the adults learn tykiokogedan if they like. For the kids it's just learnt before Gekisai.
  18. Thanks you! i'm intersted in JKA before i moved i almost joined that assosiation in Ontario. And i'll be contacting the Calgary Academy of Karate. It's too bad i'm on a tight budget at the moment, that'll pass soon though. is there anyone on this forum who is in calgary? and practices here?

yes I should add that to my profile eh.....hum.....done. and the childerns first kata are tiakiokogedan (not sure of spelling just quite yet)
  20. I'm moving to my home town of Calgary, though i dont know what to practice nor what school to go to if i do decide to switch styles. I believe I'm open to switching styles, i was thinking TWD, kickboxing for fun. but would like to stay serious with with goju if i can find it. but not sure what else to try. I've been in Gojo and am now a senior yellow. but unfortuanllty i have to leave and start new. i've been doing this for over a year but am still new to praticing the art and enjoy it every much and i'm very focused. I'd like to find a dojo with traditional values and who are disiplined. I'm wondering if i can get some help on to discribe the differnt schools form the people in Calgary. Any style and any area, i am however in the NE. i see that there is alot of aikido and jujitsu in the city, though i dont know exactly what it's like. Include prices too, i'm on a budget. I used to pay $65 a month. i'd like to stay in that area, but i've heard that it's more expencive in Calgary....? I love sparring and kata. i am open to differnt styles and people. Could anyone help me out and let me know what it's like in your dojo? where you are and your sensei's and the teachings and atmosphere. Thank you!!
  21. I love goju, it'd like to keep with it. though i may be moving and having to switch to TWD, the very opposite as you jctkd. and i hear that TWD is all legs, no upper boby techniques. i must get used to this i guess. I recommend goju for sure! and it's sounds wonderful that you found a great sensei! good luck!!
  22. Ha! Karate kid movies are almost a joke. i can't say an answer to this question though. in my opinion, it belongs to all Easterners and maybe picked up by everyone and anyone else. it is mostly creditied to Asians in general for all i know. As for the Westerners taking top position on this, well...no, they did not found it. all around the world everyone wants to be 'the best' and by all means it going to go from place to place, person to person. The winners can be full of themselves or the surrounding people can be overly encourgable. There are compititions every where. Who is the best in Martial Arts. it's all just a nationality thing. I was so Glad to here that Canada Won Against the Americans last July in Ohio! Of course, you can't blame me. But it's not a title or claim to the sport it's self. it's individual.

Asfar as i've researched, Chojun Myigai developed the two kata's after his training in China and from other places and of styles. it was developed as a means of exersice for younger boys. and for an attraction to the style of Goju for more people to come and train. At my dojo the adult classes have Geki Sai Dai Ichi as their first kata, and Ni is followed. in the childerns classes i belive they learn a differnt one first, i cant remember what it's called. but you can start learning your first kata as a white belt.
  24. Geki Sai Dai Ni =) I Love Kata!
  25. I dont think i can defend too well from a male, i do think that i can void and get away fine and in one peice. if it gets physical I'd do my best to get away with or with out damage. It's hard to say because the situation has not been risen since starting Karate. As for attacking him, there may not be very much damage therefor no piont, I'd just like to get away.
