  1. U from NY, kid? They why all the noise? NY is da best place in the world and despite common gossip, we don't kill each other here on a daily basis.
  2. No worries, YODA, I'm not planning to assault any1 with a damn knife. I wanna study the art of weilding a knife to better understand the position a possible attacker might take. Thx for concern, though
  3. Hi, I've been doing martial arts for many years now, but I've never tried weapons. I'd like to complement my Wing Chun training with some knife work (no, not kitchen he he). Any1 know a good style that teaches knife and a place in New York where I can take classes? Thx.
  4. Bruce Lee movies got me excited about ma, but I didn't have courage to go to a school with unfamiliar ppl to fight 'em. Then at 13, my father (who was a boxing champion in the Baltic fleet of Soviet Army years ago) made me take boxing classes. 4 years later I was a pretty decent boxer, despite low weight, but I was always very afraid to fight (not because of pain, but because I could lose in front of others). I took a 3-year-long break from ma when I moved away from my family at the age of 17. Then one day, I was driving by a karate school and decided, "why not?" From then on, I've done a year of karate, 2 years of capoeira and now I finally found my favorite style - wing chun. Never again in my life I'll be afraid of fighting.
  5. I began practicing Wing Chun after 4 years of boxing (regular, no kicks), a year of shotokan karate and two years of capoeira. My reason? WC is many times more practical and fun to train in. The general problem with martial arts imo, is that fighters are usually trained to circle around one another, waiting for an opening. In realistic conditions, however, the fight begins with a sudden attack and progresses very fast and violently, making most of the MA training virtually useless. In WC, you are taught to engage in a fight without any prior warmup and fancy stance. Instead of running around your opponent, u go in along the shortest course, block his initial attempt at stopping u with the punch(s) and either hammer the ******* in the face with extremily fast and powerful chain-punches or twist his hands/break knee/sweep his sorry ass. Wing Chun doesn't have any fancy high kicks, but u do get to learn a very fancy-looking handwork. Trust me, when ppl see it, they get impressed _________________ The blade is only silent until it cuts through your flesh. [ This Message was edited by: OxygenAsh on 2002-02-19 13:29 ]
