Hmmm...I really like this point.

dete, I notice you're located in Gotham City? Should we call you Batman? Welcome to the forum by the way. Hope you like it here... . . . Bruce

As you already mentioned, he was a very skilled individual who had a great amount of charisma and intelligence. However, his reputation was one of being cocky. I can neither confirm or deny this as I did not know him. His future would have been uncertain. I see one of two options: 1. He would have continued to grow his style to include several of the more modern systems (BJJ and MMA type of things). He did add several wrestling techniques and was an advocate of using what worked for you. 2. By this time he may have believed his style to be complete and, if he remained cocky, would have joined the group of people that don't think the "MMA craze" is valid and argue against it. I like to think he would have been the type to keep an open mind and would have helped to usher in this newer era of martial arts. I'm just curious, how does this discussion help you improve?

Gi vs. No-gi Grappling
ps1 replied to bushido_man96's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
I perfer to train with the gi. However, it's good to do both. The gi will make you far more technical because it slows down the training. But you need to train no gi as well so you have a good feel for the grips you have in that situation. I picked gi because I find it more fun and like the larger variety of submissions. However, I feel it's only about 3/4 of the game. -
Eddie Bravo's rubber guard
ps1 replied to danbong's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Their Half Guard stuff is really different than any other half guard stuff. Particularly because they keep ahold of the grapevine. I don't like it as much because I feel like I don't have enough movement. That's why I prefer Saulo's stuff. -

I'm green with envy. It would be amazing to train at the Kodokan. Good luck! -
What Martial Arts Have You Studied
ps1 replied to Takusankage Soke's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I have not heard the term Ji Do Kwan for quite some time. About the only "Kwan" you hear of any more is the Moo Duk Kwan. I studied TKD Ji do Kwan for about three months (admittedly, not very long, that's why I never list it). JDK was described to me as being Korea's version of Judo. Never got into the heart of it enough to see how close it actually comes. -
side kicks in MMA

All I'm saying is that it's well known that he's very skilled. So his skill shouldn't be a surprise. -

I'm not sure he would surprise them at all. Threre's lots of video on him so they would know what to expect. They would have plenty to go on in order to build a strategy. I'm not saying he wouldn't do well, just that his skill level wouldn't surprise anyone. -
Forms/Kata
ps1 replied to Jay's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
Ditto. I enjoy them very much. But that doesn't mean I need to use them to teach someone how to defend themselves. -
I knew a guy who took "freestyle karate." He told me it just meant that they weren't affiliated with any one system (shotokan, Ishin Ryu ect...).

Check page 2. I gave a likely explination. Yes. A typical board for breaking (12x8x1 I think). It bruised the tip of my middle finger though. Very impressive, ps1. Maybe. Never again though. That bruise hurt for weeks.

Yeah...how did we get so far off topic ... don't answer that!

No doubt! -
Sounds like we're talking about forms that are for 2nd and 3rd dans. So, in theory, they should have an excellent grasp of the basics. I'm not saying that means they shouldn't or don't need to practice them, just that it's safe to practice the more difficult aspects at this point.

I've always seen insults and dirogatory gestures as a way of demonstrating fear of action. So I brush them off easily. While deployed in Iraq, I had the unfortunate duty of testifying against some of my fellow soldiers due to some of their indiscressions. It's something that was not easy for me and I didn't like doing at the time. But, in my opinion, it saved lives and it's something I have to deal with every day. As you can imagine, the other soldiers weren't very happy. Many threatened me and called me some unspeakable things. I made it clear that if any of them wanted to settle the matter with me, they could feel free to do so in what ever manner they saw fit without any fear of legal retribution (that is, they could try to beat me up if they wanted to and I wouldn't tell on them). As the training NCO, I was the combatives instructor. None of them ever tried to do anything but insult me. They knew I would have beat them within an inch of their lives. They were afraid of me, so they attempted to attack my character, insulted me and my family, and were generally unplesant to work with. Of all the things that happened with that situation, the only thing that bothered me is that people who were supposed to be team mates and friends would betray the trust of the unit as they did.

It's a way of moving around or waving the arms and moving through a wide range of stances. The indonesian for it is tjimindeku (chi-mindy-coo) which literally means, "movements that confuse." If done properly, the you will appear to be off balance or have openings that are not really there. It takes lots of practice though because you need to have a keen understanding of the weaknesses for each portion of your movement. Some people do it improperly and it just looks like frantic movement.

Ok. Thanks. Kinda like saying O Sensei then?

side kicks in MMA

The other day I watched Jeff Curran fight on the versus network. He threw 3 or 4 side kicks. But the guy he was fighting wasn't very good either. -
How much money in diffrent sports?
ps1 replied to 50inches's topic in Pro Fighting Matches and Leagues
Yup. UFC guys are probably pretty close to that now too. But that's a really advanced level (obviously). -
In the end, Bushido's correct. You need to use what works within the rules you are given. However, something I was always able to use to my advantage was the crawl. It worked well to counfuse opponents who like to stay back and time you. But it doesn't work well against the guys who just blitz right in regardless of what you're doing.

Ok, this is off thread but I need to know. What is an Eternal Grand Master?
