  1. Me neither till recently and its pretty cool. its a shield and a knife or spear. the techinuqes are really interesting. has anyone else trained with this weapon?
  2. hope you will not confuse true self defence techniques with kumite and competititions. true karate is hidden within kata and the moves are in fact very deadly and so are illegal in kumite and competitions. dig a little deeper and i think you will appreiciate your kata better. good luck.
  3. Its exercises from the original feeding crane system that goju came from. to learn more about it visit https://www.kimowall.org and look for kung li. Tell me what you think.
  4. your brother does good work the armor looks nice
  5. where is a good affordable place to get insurance for a karate school.
  6. first off i have found that kids classes should be not much longer than one hour or you will loose their concentration. secound dont get to serious with them play games that trick them into doing karate movements, and give rewards. Sometimes we would give patches to the childern who preform well or stripes on their belt. Such as respect stripe or power patch just to get the others to say to themselves i want that so i better try harder. I dont know use you imagination and good luck
  7. one in a million times maybe if they get lucky. thats impossible
  8. anyone ever heard of it or if so do you still train the exercises.
  9. Just wandering recently I had the honor of meeting and training with Kimo Sensei and I would recommend it to anyone. Also wondering if anyone is a member of his orginization the Kodokan. here is his website https://www.kimowall.org check it out especially his lineage
  10. well any classes such as speech and education classes. I am taking classes to be a teacher so they really helped. Also any type of anatomy class of sports science. I also have recently taken classes in Ancient Thai Massage and that really helps me not only with people with injuries but you learn interesting energy lines and pressure points.
  11. this is really to bad but typical of the tournament scene. I have also had bad experiences in tournaments and refuse to even go watch them due to the lack of martial arts that i see in them. It is more like a shouting gymnastic match than karate. If your students want to participate in extracurricular activities outside of class maybe research a good seminar of camp to attend would be my advice.
  12. if you are looking for fancy moves and ever have to defend yourself you will be very disappointed with you martial arts. You may impress tournament judges or those ignorant to the martial arts but not someone who is trying to take your head off.
  13. My teacher introduced me to Kancho Takahashi and we began training. And Kimo Sensei just recently came and visited our dojo and lived in the area for a short while so had the honor of joining his orginization.
  14. if you are interested in goju-ryu karate i may be able to help you out
  15. I have for years studied under Kancho Akira Takahashi of the Genbukan in Kyoto, Japan. His teachers include Gogen Yamaguchi, among others who directly sutdied with Myiagi. Recently I have had the honor of joining the Kodokan under Kimo Wall sensei and I am convinced that it is authentic goju-ryu. He trained under Miyagi's senior student Higa.
  16. Im only speaking from what ive been taught this is of course my opinion. I have been taught to only ask a small amount of questions during class and to watch and imitate what the sensei is doing. If there is to much talking then you are not training. Now after class my teacher is allways willing to spend as much time necessary on questions but not in class. As far as the sensei, mine gives info. on a personal basis you dont want to bog someone down with to much info. just get them to do the basic movement and over time pick out things to improve and before you know it that person will have really good technique. So not alot of talk, beginners sould not look like black belts, what im saying they may be able to look the part but they wont understand what they are doing without going threw the motions of learning.
  17. yeah all the time if i have an idle moment and i become bored my mind automatically turns to karate. I guess im a dork for this type of stuff guess im at the right place Just playing everyone.
  18. Oh well yes Hammer is right i should of said that the goju-kai is A governing body of goju-ryu. There are others of course but from my experience the goju-kai is one that is widely accpted in Japan and to the others i admit my ignorance in that area. I guess it would be a good idea to look into these also . One question to Hammer you listed Sho Bu Kan is that house not under a ogrinization? My school is called the Gen Bu Kan and we are still under the Goju-kai. Just a curious question thanx.
  19. yeah that reallly sucks so you didnt hear form the sensei before they colsed and you trained with there for 7 years? seems like he would respect you enough to talk to you one on one. Oh well good luck in finding another goju school I also train goju hence the name and i really like it so I hope you find a good school.
  20. yeah me either Lion but different strokes for different folks. The color of the belt is not important its what you train. I also come from a traditional school and we do not test for white belt, you will however have your white belt for a while.
  21. good luck with your training and most of all i be careful in Iraq and do the US proud. I dont agree with the war but i know the soldigers dont have anything to do with that but I really respect you for going fight for us. Thank you and be careful.
  22. well to 1 there are standards in Goju-ryu but testing can vary tremendously depending on your instructor. 2 the history is pretty easy to find on the internet but start with Miyagi and see what you get. You can also find info on one of Miyagi's teacher Higioana (might be spelled wrong) then Miyagi trained several styles of kung fu in China came back to okinawa took it to Japan and so on. Thats very shortned but the jist is there, you should also know about Gogen Yamaguchi. 3 time, after time you will say them in your sleep, and you can probably find that in the internet, see if you can find info on the Goju-kai thats the governing body of Goju ryu. 4 Do what youve trained and remain calm. Good luck
  23. hey shawn my only advice is to be patient w/ him. goju is very traditional so the same old white belt techniques.... get used to them, i am a black belt and that is the majority of what i train is basics. your basics are what really works. all of the fancy katas and stuff like that will come in time but to have them work first your basics have to. goju for lack of a better word can be very boring and tedious but if you stick with it you will find the rewards far surpas the time you put into it. good luck.
  24. in japan this kata has been named a black belt kata not to say that when you reach black belt it should be at a black belt level but rather you do this kata at a test for shodan. The goju-kai will ever so often pick kata that are to be emphasised so that the kata is not under trained this year they happened to choose this particular kata. thats what i was trying to say sorry if ther was any confusion.
