  1. Man, I would definitley bring some rehydration powder, pepto in pill form and immodium for the stray stomach probs you'll run into sooner or later. The rehydration powder is for the crazy amount of sweating you'll do if you plan on training, I got so dehydrated that I was cramping from any small movement ... definitley not fun. Oh one last thing, Heavilly DEET concentrated bug spray, I don't want to make you paranoid, but my wife picked up Dengue fever from a mosquito bite down there. Probly won't kill you, but from watching her I can tell you it sucks. A Lot. And will most certainly put the kibocsh on any training you planned. Have fun! PS. If you don't have lonely planets thailand guide, I'd highly reccomend it as well.
  2. I can vouch that a bag hung from rafters will shake the surounding structure quite a bit - unless its a garage I'd go with either the metal bag stand wedged into a corner so it doesn't walk too much, or maybe a free standing bag with a weighted base if you aren't too much of a purist.
  3. Yeah , you guys are right, I should probably at least get the heart end of it checked out - although I'm fairly sure its muscular pain it would be good to know for sure.
  4. Hey all, just wondering if anyone here has experienced anything like this before. I realize I should visit a doctor, but was looking for any experience. So around christmas time I was training somewhat obsesively (bjj and conditioning stuff) after about 4 straight days of training, I was taking my rest day - but my wife convinced me to do a pilates routine with her. Me thinking, its only pilates, this can't screw up my rest too much right? Well about halfway through, doing some flutter kick type things my chest seizes up and I have to lay on the floor in pain for about 5 minutes. At first I thought I was having a heart atack - but it subsided for the most part. Now Several month later, the solar plexis to left central pectoral is still tender, and I'm just now easing back into training - twisting motions seem the most noticably painful, although direct pressure is bad as well. did I tear a muscle overtraining? crack a rib or something? this was really weird way to injure myself, and slowwww healing time. gahh very frustraiting, 2007 was the year of the injury for me.
  5. There are several old threads discussing some of the various camps people here have been to if you do a search. I went to a training camp in phuket last summer for 2 weeks and must say it was a great experience. If you go you should plan on spending a few extra weeks staying at guesthouses around bangkok and maybe Chiang Mai. Get the newest lonely planet guidebook. The exchange rate is so affordable in thailand that once you are there, you might as well stay a while if you can get the time off of work.
  6. exactly, so if they overturn decisions for Marijuana, then they should overturn them for steroids as well.
  7. oh, this might be the kicker for me, my wrists are both pretty messed up right now. Can't put any pressure on the left one thats not straight ahead without it screaming. ahh well.
  8. This is all true, and I agree it needs to be curbed, however the fact the athletic commision completely overturned a decisive submission win for nom performance drugs seems inconsistent with the treatment of steroids. Many fighters have tested positive for steroids, and not had wins overturned. Why should a recreational drug that likely decreases performance receive harsher treatment than something that more realistically could have changed the outcome of the match?
  9. yeah that no decision stuff sucked - I personally don't think it matters if a fighter wants to toke or not, but thats just me.
  10. Rainbow warior; can you go into more detail for the rotation move thing you stated? Do you mean for like power lifts (cleans, jerks stuff like that)
  11. This is what I suspected - Been trying to convince myself that the standard would be fine, but probly for my lifting needs olympic makes more sense. (I guess this makes good logical sense - olympic lifts need olympic equip? heh)
  12. I've recently been pricing a weight bench and set - and have been wondering whether it matters which of these i get - the olympic obviously takes up quite a bit more space - so i'd like to think the standard would be ok, but I suspect I'd regret it in the long run. anyone have experience with both of these to compare/contrast? can one do olympic style lifts with the standard bar still? (squats, cleans etc)
  13. I experienced this over the summer as well - I was doing a pullup from a wooden beam that was kind of wide for my grip, and something just gave on me. My wrist was out of commision for most of the summer. Had to stop bag work and the majority of weight work, pushups were ok as long as I stayed on my knuckles. It improved over time, but took forever - I'm still not really sure what I did to it, or how. Wrists are fragile things unfortunatley.
  14. I've never really been able to stomach the metal, so I usually stick to techno, or some faster paced indie rock
  15. I've done it with 12 sets working my way down and it was pretty rough. I try to keep the rests to a minimum, just enough to mostly catch my breath (still probly at least 30 secs).
  16. Look around for various plyometric exercices as well, they will increase your explosive power. clapping pushups, medicine ball throws, box jumps etc etc.
  17. I recently came accross a workout idea that was apparently taken from a maximum security prison. Everyone of course is familliar with the burpee I hope? This was supposedly done by inmates deemed to dangerous to have access to free weights. Basically you just do decending sets of burpees. You weren't considered a man or to be respected unless you could start from 20 and work all the way down to 1. (set of 20, set of 19, set of 18) keep in mind they only got less than 30 minutes to work out, so any longer than this time frame doesnt count. Not sure if any of this is true, but its a fun and different endurance and stamina workout, have fun!
  18. It looks like an MMA school to me. If thats what you are looking for than have at it! you can always change your mind ( as long as they don't require a contract that is)
  19. I find a good set up is to get a tight overhook on the side you want it on trapping the arm to the mat and getting their balance all off center, and start moving like for an oma- plata to the side, then yank the shin in front real quick and presto!
  20. Check out some websites like: https://www.bodybuilding.com take some of there stuff with a grain of salt(particularly anything written about suplements, which are for sale on the site).. but you can find good information on here, workout routines, etc by a number of different independent authors. https://www.bodyweightculture.com a great resource for all kinds of training ideas that involve little to no equipment. Something challenging enough for anyone on this site. https://www.lockflow.com not really workout ideas, but a great resource in general for grappling, mma techniques and discussion hope that helps!
  21. yeah, I'm not really that advanced - just more advanced than most of these guys.. its a fairly new club. They have a decent Jiu Jitsu instructor, so I don't think they'd really want my help instructing at all. But might be worth a shot anyway. Its frustrating right now, because now that i'm back in my home town for an extended period of time - and some decent gyms have opened up I can't afford to enroll in any of them. ::sigh:: ah well.
  22. So, just to gloat a little, I havn't been able to train officially much lately as all the gyms around here are way over my price range (130-150 a month!! gotta pay the rent y'know..) But I saw a posting for a free mma class in my area. So I figured what the hell, one free mma class is better than no class at all, and packed my stuff up after work and headed out. now, to be fair I think I was more experienced at grappling than most of the guys there, but we started rolling after a few drills and I was hitting some sick submissions. An armbar from the back, upside down armbar from the guard, a couple of guilotines, and ::gasp:: a gogo-plata! the exotic of exotic submissions which I have never been able to pull off before. So I guess that class got it out of mysystem a little bit, but man.. I need to find a place to train again. ::end rambling::
  23. a couple of karate based fighters I've known of in MMA competition are ryota machida (shotokan i think), bas rutten (kyoksushkin) , a guy named jeff newton in KOTC , and believe it or not, George St Pierre has a pretty high belt in kyokushkin i believe. oh and Seth Petruzelli from the Ultimate fighter also has a karate background. as has been mentioned however, all of these fighters cross train extensively in other arts. Machida has been very successful and has kept his striking very karate esque still. GSP has kept a lot of it , but obviously incorporated a large degree of wrestling, bjj, and muay thai to round out his game. It would be interesting to see more serious fighters come from a striking background such as karate etc, but its not too likely in the near future.
  24. sweet, thanks for the ideas Sohan! the basketball/medicine ball sounds like a nice improvised workout aid, and i'm all about training cheaply/ minimal equipment.
  25. thanks for the input Sohan, yeah i'm still tweaking the sets a bit - I suspected that the curls and tricep extensions may not be the best options, I'll have to give the snatches a try. As for the medicine ball, it's on my list of equipment to purchase. I've been trying to work on a plyometric program to go along with this, but so far mostly just have clapping pushups, tuck jumps, and resistance band punches.
