Best movie martial artist
Logan replied to gojuchad's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
Jackie Chan. Not only for his MA skill but for his creativity. -
I want to thank the nintendo era for the current view of MA. Most kids that think of MA think of Mortal Kombat. Violent, bloody, attacking of each other. Few realize that there is a whole, different, more important side to MA. I see many parents bring children to class to learn MA. First the kids are into it because they want to kick someones head off. The parents think it will do them some good to have some discipline,(that they are obviously lacking at home). The next thing that happens the kid finds out it isn't just kicking and punching, and darn it ,there's all those push-ups and situps. So the child wants out and back to his controller where he doesn't have to do squat thrusts to kick someones a**. So the parent allows him to quit. (lord knows the kid gets what he wants). So in essence the parent has taught the kid to be a quitter. If things get tough, quit. Welcome to the new genereation.

That is what I like about Jackie Chan movies. He will use whatever is at is disposal to attack or defend. I catch myself comtemplating what I would use if I was attacked in the room I am in.

I workout with elastic tubing. Punching, and kicking. I think it has increased my speed. You can use bungee cords, or I use medical tubing you can get at most supply stores. You can snake it through the crack in the door on the hinge side and then shut the door and it will stay. This way you can set at any length.

IMO = "In My Opinion" MA = "Martial Arts" ISC--I stand corrected

Help.!!!! Would someone please give me a list of all these abreviations. I have figured out IMO, MA, and a few others.

I too have been in a profession where fighting was a possibility every night. I worked security at an arena. There were concerts, rodeos, and professional wrestling all the time. Sometimes I was forced into an altercation. I have even gone offensive. Lots of times, just the show of aggressive behavior will keep you out of aggression. "Who wants to fight a crazy person?" Learning alot to learning nothing at all

Think about realizing you don't know near as much as you thought you did when you thought you knew everything, and then figuring how dumb you were then, it should make you seem smarter. -
What would you do for three billion?

TKD kicks for kicking people off horses
Logan replied to dear john's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I got kicked off a horse once. They don't like it when adults ride them at wal-mart. Hey, I paid my quarter! -
Surely, this is a test by the all mighty karateforums management to see if anyone will recomend a school to someone with this attitude. If not, search get out of any situation that may evolve into a 'hardcore' streetfight.

It is true that certian aspect of martial arts isn't taught iin every discipline. I think humility is taught to some degree in boxing and wrestling and other sports. If it is not, Why? You are training your body and mind to exceed the levels of your normal people. You should be taught to not use these skills so readily on the general public. IMO any MA that goes into a bar or anywhere else and intentionally picks a fight with someone is a coward. You are picking a fight with someone you presume does not know as much as you do. If that was not your intent you would seek out other MA's. I do not find anything wrong with relaying your experiences if you were honestly attacked. You should feel a certain amount of pride for defending your self. Continue on your path AngelaG. It is refreshing.

What motivates you to train

I think for 1 billion, I could rename it, that way I could think of "something"else.

Glad to see there are still Cobra Kai dojos out there. Look forward to seeing you on Cops someday.

Squawman wrote to fu** belts, that they were there to just hold up pants. For the most part I agree with that. But yet he says that he has 10 year old bb's in his class. Apparently belts are very important in his class. If not why are they being awarded so abundantly. His statement that a black belt means that 'you were ready to learn' is what is wrong with the belt system. What the he** does yellow belt mean? As far as children go, are we doing them any favors by letting them think they are something they are not. You wouldn't coerce a little league pitcher into thinking that he is just as good as a major league ballplayer, just becuase you can 'buy' him the same jersey. Think of the disappointment that would ensue. Child MA's should learn discipline, confidence, honor, integrity all the good qualities that come from the martial arts, including honesty.
-
That I could live with, a child with an elevated belt. I have always felt that the bb was the symbol of experience. I don't know how true it is. The old story of white belt evolving into a black belt, just by the wearer working in it for years and years. But I believe in that. How much experience could any kid have?
-
Thank you for feeling the same way. I was worried that I would step on alot of people's toes for speaking out. I meant no disrespect but it just amazed me that instructors could deem it appropriate to award a kid a bb. I agree on rare occaisions there can be a prodigy. But for them to all turn up at the same school at the same tournament? There can't be that many 'Dojo Howsers' out there.

I was watching a martial arts competition on espn and was astounded by the fact that there were several black belts under the age of 10. How do people feel about that? Can a child really have the mental clarity, and understanding to achieve the level discipline that normally is associated with ascending to black belt? Are we now just accepting 'going through the motions' as a way to earn your rank? Or am I just old fashioned?

Thank you for the welcome! Sorry to be such a stick in the mud. I just pause with concern when I hear of young martial artists kicking there smaller siblings, and casting blame to their training. Study of the Arts should harness, not unleash.

Interesting? You said that you kicked your little brother after he threw his wallet at you. By throwing his wallet at you, I assume he wasn't 'right' behind you. What you did was react out of anger. You struck out at something that had harmed you. There was , I am sure, no sense of danger in your own home. So you were not reacting out of fear, or being threatened. One must learn to control their temper, if they are to continue the pursuit of enlightenment. The more knowledge you gain, the more you should be able to control it. Hopefully, as you progress you will learn this. One last thing. Was your little brother throwing his wallet at you truly unprovoked?
