  1. kenpo training is going well , ikca does seem like a short version ( less forms ) when i do research but thats ok just leave more room to improvise heh , now even tho im not a black belt yet i am thinking of a complimentary art to take but im running into the same problem no instructors around . im searching for some kenjutsu and iaido videos i can learn from for later swords just interest me . but as for an unarmed combat complimentary i was checking out that steven k hayes website he offers some pretty pricey videos and of course claims they are fool proof yada yada im also interested in aikido but i dont know if a video can translate what is needed to grasp that art . anyway lemme know if ya got any suggestions . thanks .

    kenpo~

takeing kenpo and lovin it , i realize that most of the movements translate into knife , and there is a quater staff video offered by chuck sullivan, other than that if i wanted to learn other weapons should i seek a specific art or are there any decent videos ( altho id rather an instructor ) or should i just get a video to learn the basics and tranlate it to kenpo since it seems to be alot of "freestyle" the weapons btw id like to learn are nunchuka and katana , and i think i saw a nunchuka form under one of the black belt qualifications for kenpo i dont think it was ikca tho .
  3. wear ear muffs when sparring , then blindfolds , or fight enough till you start to "feel " it just like when you start something new its awkward and then you finally get it down and can do it after a while you can do it without thinking about it . practice practice practice

  5. grandmasterchen~ can you go more indepth into it or point me in the right direction (reading matierial videos trainers ect.)
  6. The purpose of Kiai as i understand it (and you can say it anyway you like , grunts , uh- sounds , rolling growls ) is to 1)expell air from your lungs faster and in turn give you more power 2) using sound to distract and throw off your opponent (i.e. shock value ) and in shotokan at least kiai is inserted in kata at supposedly powerful points or at the climax and the end of a kata . personally I like yelling kiai (not hi-ya ) while delivering a powerful blow, i think most arts have a similarity like you say so grunt or growl , bruce lee and his WAaaaaa nosies all basically release air ( less air in yor body the more solid it is , if you have to take a hit ) and to distract , ever go over a dip or bump in your car that sounds bad and say ouch or cringe just a little , same principle , yell KIAI! as you knife hand someone on the base of the neck and not only will it hurt thier body will usually automatically "say ouch " just my 2 cents.
  7. I would have to say i like most types of music, not much country at all tho but its all realative to my mood if im training hard and fast i like metal , like iron maiden if im learning technique slowly (by myself for the most part ) some classical tunes do the trick hell ive even listened to some irish folk lore type stuff (the instrumental stuff and when i say instrumental i mean bag pipes and flutes irish) it really just depends i think all music has its place even if some is in the trash can ever listen to a Danzig album called Black Aria , not bad , but once again gotta be the right time.
  8. Long Island Ice Tea Best.drink.ever.
  9. I picked up a copy of Tao of Jeet Kune Do , and started reading it since i made this post originally , not only do i look at it different now , but furthermore withdraw the original post , JKD i think is more of a mind set and physical conditioning , in short not to limit ones self . Well im off to find my own JKD and suggest everyone else do the same .
  10. strikeing a bucket full of sand with knife hands is good conditioning , or start with gardening soil then sand work up to pebbles whatever , i started doing that recently , hehe make sure your nails are cut and you dont care about your cuticles or whatever they are called cuz it will tear your hands up .
  11. right on im not disaggreeing with the chambering punch theory being a bit less feective in combat , real combat that is , kinda like kicking someone in the face , takes less time and energy to move your fist from your waist (or around there , guard position) then to bring your foot from the floor to someones head. ive been reading Tao of Jeet Kune Do so im becomeing alot more open minded about mixing styles together even tho i plan to master kenpo, as it were . i dont think i would mind cross training of a different type later . i gotta admit kenpo certainly has a flow to it , altho "chambering" comes a bit more natural atm i beleive ill get over it soon , even when i sparred in shotokan id get griped at for not returning to ready position . i just need to "feel" how to generate power while "flowing" i suppose any tips on taht delta ? hehe besides just practice till it happens . =D
  12. I have found them ( shotokan and kenpo ) to be very similar and very different , im going to a school btw , for example the fist they hold is different , and when I say they you understand i mean the school i attend which is ICKA . and they dont have as many pull back motions like with the reverse punch instead of bringing the none punching had back and "re-cocking" every punch its thrown more like a boxing punch . personally I like the kiai for forceful movements and shock value but , i havent seen anything i dont like in this class so far so maybe ill just give a shout out in the name of shotokan next time we sparr and check the look on my opponents face hehe should be interesting . we just got a guy from tkd also. so we can get all crazy.heh ill let ya know how it turns out , i just wish i could operate my digital camera while sparring.
  13. Ooooh im a yellow belt now ( on website) go go gadget 25 posts.
  14. here is a question for you seasoned kenpoists (ive had 3 classes to date heh) I havent really practiced any kata or anything , sorta started working the orange belt the first night ( beheading the dragon and such) and other night was all work out and last sparring. in any point in kenpo is there a KIAI! in the kata ? or would they not appriciate me bringing my magic shotokan word into thier style , lol cuz i almost shouted it in class last night . my last instructor made us shout on every 10th count no matter what we were doing punches , kicks , sit ups all that. just curious .
