  1. Work on your timing. Learn to feint and draw.
  2. They are equal, physics explains this concept very easily. But, speed is easier to improve IMHO.
  3. Give his arm a quick tug. He will step forward. You then shoot.
  4. I think it would be very difficult to learn wrestling takedowns easily. The advantage I like about wrestling as compared to my knowledge of Judo and BJJ is the fluidity of wrestling takedowns. I think this had more to do with my coach than anything but he had us trained to fluidly move to another chain of moves from any position if one didn't work. Of course I have over two times as much experience in wrestling than the other two combined and I'm a former state champion wrestler, so I'm a bit biased. I just wish there were adult wrestling classes, but I do like intergrating the above three. I just really need to get more BJJ experience first.
  5. Over under, crossface, or even just trap both arms and throw if he is smaller than you. But work on your sprawling first. Since all he is doing is bearhugging you it implies he is a novice at takedowns, it should be easy to counter with a little knowledge.
  6. Oops, my mistake. I apologize. I always get defensive about Oklahoma. I love this part of the country and the people here.
  7. Does your foot get numb at all?
  8. Are you talking about in martial arts or in general. Both answers show a lack of knowledge on your part.
  9. There is no reliable way to defend against an opponent with a gun at that distance. This is when you need to be able to read your opponent intent. Usually your instincts will be correct. A hard looking character coming up to you with anger in his eyes would be a worse case scenario. Your probably screwed in this case and your best bet is too act weak and docile hoping he will not kill you. A nervous person gives a few more options, but your more likely to survive if you run for it. Trust your instincts and try to not get yourself in a situation such as this. P.S. If you do eventually get the chance to strike, don't stop attacking until the guy is down and out. If you hit him and try to run for it, you may very well only get a few feet away.
  10. Chemical weapon eh? It sounds right. It does indeed escalate the force used. I had a guy do it while sparring one time in order to break an armlock I had on him. He distracted me and broke my hold, but I really worked him over right after that. Luckily I came back to my senses before it got out of hand.
  11. Good read. I learned the following bit of information the hard way: Catch your thumb once while punching and you to will learn to keep them curled in.
  12. I've read where vitamin C and E can help reduce the longevity of the soreness, but I've never experienced it. I always take a couple of advil and leave it at that. After a week or two you won't get as sore anymore anyway.
  13. During the first job I ever had I worked with a guy named Ben that was very annoying. I eventually left that job and Ben became my roommate, very very annoying guy. Later, Ben became my brother in law and was as annoying as ever. You may not have picked this up, but Ben isn't the same person in all of these examples. Ben is the example of any annoying person I've come across. It wasn't until I figured out how to deal with Ben that he eventually wasn't in my life anymore. The problem was partially on my part because I wasn't patient at all. Your stated your sensei is very good. Trust in him to handle the situation properly and concentrate on your training.
  14. I'd rather fight a big fat guy than a skinny guy. From my experiences, the fat guy will tire very quickly and is easy to knock off his feet. Once this happens you can just punch and kick away while he is breathing hard on the ground. Now the skinny guy substitutes the force that a fat guy has with speed. Plus they always seem to have more conditioning whether that is natural or obtained from exercise. Just get him off his feet. Try fighting him in gravelely area to help loosen his traction. If you both fall, you will get up much quicker. If you can do this, you will win. Now if he is just a big guy and not fat, you will have a to abandon this strategy.
  15. What are some feints that you like and what does it open up? Same question with Counter-attacks.
  16. I've taken quite a bit of combat handgun courses and have practiced as much as my wallet will let me. I just wish there were a more economical way of training. The club I belong too charges less than any others I've seen for classes, but it is still expensive. Then you have to add the cost of bullets to that. I will say I feel confident that I can use my weapon efficiently now, but I hope I never have too. I carry a Kimber Ultra CDP which is chambered in the .45, I wanted to go with a Colt commander, but decided I wanted the shorter barrel. The reason for this isn't because its easier to conceal, because it really isn't, its because I wanted a slower muzzle velocity to help prevent the bullet from penetrating walls. Kind of a safety mechanism. The 1911 feels more natural to me personally. Thats why I don't mention the glock. It is a fine weapon also, but just not for me. I have a hard time getting used to the trigger. The Kimber trigger is what makes the weapon. It is very good.
  17. I remember in college a guy would go to every sorority and talk about rape statistics and such. He would then offer to teach a day long self defense course for 150 bucks and would sell them a 5 dollar can of Pepper spray for 30 bucks. Maybe he was doing a public service
  18. How much does it cost to buy a set of 370 pound clothes? I thought I paid too much for my gi, but I imagine it was only pennies compared to such an outfit. You could by a suit of armor. At least it would look cool.
  19. I'll just relate a few times I got my butt kicked. When I was younger (18), some guys started flipping me and my two buddies off as we were driving. Getting a little upset I flew it back and told them to pull over. I pull over and tell my two friends, "Lets go get em!" They looked back and said, "We don't want to fight them." Since I was already out of the car and they were coming upon me, I knew it was time for some negotiations. (3 of them) I looked at them and said, "OK, who is first?" They replied, "All of us,(curse words)" It sucks my attempt to seperate them didn't work. At this point I went after the closest guy and started punching. It didn't take long before I was hit hard in the side of my head. This dazed me and I somehow managed to keep my feet, but I was gone at this point. Then my friends got out and started to help. One of the guys noticed this and went up to one of my buddies and asked him if he wanted any. He said no. When the guy turned back to help his friends, my buddy cold punched him hard knocking him down and out. Then my other buddy threw off the other two. I got in the car and left with my buddies. I was beaten fairly good, but nothing too bad. Another time, I was at a bar and some guy starts yelling at me. I was sitting down at the time and just gave him a "What are you talking about?" emulation. At this point he punched me hard. I was knocked out for a short time. He only hit me that one time before the bouncers showed up. It took me a long time to learn anything from both of these experiences. One lesson reflected on is too not escalate situations just because of your pride. Another lesson is to be prepared too defend yourself if you can't de-escalate a situation.
  20. I had a kidney stone when I was 17, absolutely a debilitating pain. I've broken a rib and it wasn't even close to the amount of pain I had with the kidney stone.
  21. My cousin is an amateur arm wrestler. I've never watched him compete, but it has a lot to do with technique. He told me that your forearm strenght really helps. So I'd say do any exercise to strengthen your forearm. Besides, it will also help prevent tennis elbow.
  22. Mean little goat. My grandmother had a goat. I jumped in my truck and took off one day without realizing it was under the tire. I got out and it gave me a sad little goat noise and it hobbled off. I just assumed it died, but about 3 weeks later it showed up without any apparent injuries. It always gave me an evil look after that like it was going to get even. So I made sure not to lay under any tires when the goat was around.
