Its finally doing better. I went to my doc and he confirmed it was a strain of the Sternocleidomastoid which is the muscle that attaches at the sternum and goes around to the ball just behind the ear. Its still slightly sore if I pull on the muscle to stretch it, but the constant pain is gone. The constant pain lasted almost exactly 4 weeks and then just stopped suddenly and became on and off pain for the last week and today hasn't hurt at all unless I do the pulling of the muscle which the doc reccomended to keep it stretched out slightly. Thanks for all the advice.

I hurt something in my neck about 2 weeks ago. The sore part is on the right side at about the first cervical bone. If I push in on the muscle there it hurts. My neck had been tight for about two days before the pain appeared. I went to the chiropractor and was told I'd knocked some of the cervical bones out of alignment and they caused me to further strain the muscle. The tightness is gone after my visit to the chiropractor (one week ago) but now i'm getting a sensation like a low level dull pain that starts at the tender spot and runs up to the top of my skull. Is this just a nerve thing brought on by swelling during healing? I'll admit this started after I started going back to BJJ after a week off due to the injury. Secondly, how long do strains take to heal and should I completely stop training or can I take it lightly? P.S. My neck doesn't hurt if I move it up and down only when I turn my head to the left.

Same, I prefer the front kick.

I like the Jab. I can do more things with it than any other punch.

Faster Knee Strikes?
SoonerJohn replied to BLOWN's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
Find a steep hill. Sprint up the hill. Run slowly backwards down the hill. Don't fall. Do this drill about 5-10 times each time you do them. -
Wrestling head gear
SoonerJohn replied to xnfx's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
I don't wear them either, but wish I would have while wrestling all those years. Its my most embarrissing feature. I liked the ones that rested against my ears though, they had a smaller profile. Although I do see the point Subgrappler is making. -
An MMA beating

I'd hope he would tap if you got him in a heel hook, I'd also hope you wouldn't use much cranking on it to do damage though either. -
I want to preface this by saying that everyones experiences and opinions are different, so here are mine: I probably wouldn't do many kicks if any in a real fight, but it would be on either side of the knee if I did. I've not been in a great amount of real fights, but the ones I've been in I've thrown one kick. I mainly threw punches and grappled. My background is heavy in boxing and wrestling though with Jiu Jitsu and kickboxing being what I do these days in a mixed martial arts class. I'm biased towards boxing and I've taking both boxing and kickboxing separetly and learned much more by concentrating on boxing. Of course we trained harder in boxing, so it probably had a lot to do with it and the coach was top notch and taught the ends and outs of the strategy very well. This I don't know. I think you know what I'll say by now. Boxing.

Yeah, if it doesn't hurt, its not a problem. Well, it may get people calling you "Old Man", but that shouldn't be a problem.

season over.
SoonerJohn replied to jnpnshr411's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
At my school, before I graduated, in the offseason several of us wanted to continue to practice wrestling and convinced the coach to let us do it and he continued to teach. It wasn't as hardcore as during the season, but it was very helpful. You may see if any others would want to do that and maybe get that organized and going. Of course you will have some that are doing Track or cross country, so you may not get enough interest. -

Well, I can agree with you on principal, but in reality I've seen the studies done on these circumstances. I'll use weightlifting as an example since you can better gauge growth. Having a trainer or partner to push you to succeed has consistently shown 30%-40% more muscle growth. I do agree that it takes internal willpower to want to succeed, but this is maximized by having others help.

Vomiting, especially violently, is very rough on your body. Probably a nerve problem or a strained muscle. Is it a sharp pain or a dull one? Is it constant or does it happen when you make certain movements or when you breathe? It could be an infection. Either way, may as well go see a doctor.

I'm a big fan of determination to succeed in whatever circumstance you are in, but it usually turns out that you suffer by not having anyone that pushes you to become the best you can.

Wrestling and BJJ
SoonerJohn replied to MFGQ's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
Ouch, in my young stupid days I once did a similar thing were I challenged a car full of guys. They all got out and I said, "Ok, who is first?" Their response was, "All of us." Then they started beating me! I got some solid hits in, but damn I took a beating. Luckily some people showed up and broke it up. I did feel like that if I could have gotten into a corner, I may have kept them at distance long enough for help to arrive. -
Tao of Jeet Kune Do
SoonerJohn replied to Jeet Kune Do's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
I have it and have read it about 5 times over the years. Not so much for learning JKD, but mainly because he really goes over tactical fighting very well. -
Who is your favourite famous Martial Artist?
SoonerJohn replied to Jeet Kune Do's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Mine is Rocky Marciano because he worked harder and had more determination than anyone. -
Big Guys
SoonerJohn replied to TheAnimal's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
I'm 6'1" tall and 200, so I'm not exactly small, but whenever I go against a big guy, it always seems chokes work best. -
Chuck Liddell's KO power
SoonerJohn replied to UseoForce's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
He vaguely reminds me of Rocky Marciano. He commits to the punch and doesn't worry about counters. If you can get them, watch some of Marcianos fights and compare them. -
Need plenty of help
SoonerJohn replied to UseoForce's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
I was hesitant about kettlebells, but then I met some professional arm wrestlers (yes, apparently their are professionals) and they invited me to do some kettlebell workouts with them. I'll say I was impressed with them. I was sore and now I lift with them once a week. -
Does anyone else have a goal in mind?
SoonerJohn replied to tkdan's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
My goal is to Crush my enemies, to see them driven before me, and to hear the lamentations of the women! Wait, that is Conans goals in life. My goal is to get enjoyment out of martial arts, which I think I've accomplished. -
hmmm....maybe the guy is 100 years old!
