I am directing this to instructors, parents, what not. What are some good ways to keep the kids motivated (especially the 11 yr old) to practice the things they need to learn. I know he likes it, all of them do, but getting them to practice it at home is a real quest. What can I do as a parent to assist them better? I am also a student, and I practice several hours a day. I try to get them to practice with me, but after 15 min, they are off doing something else. *edit, I have 3 children. An 11 yr old boy, 9 yr old girl, and a 6 yr old girl.

Describe your class...
torris replied to Topic's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
lets see, 50 jumping jacks, then various stretching exercises (about 15-20 min). Then kicking drills, block drills, and punching drills (about 15-20 min). Then we do one steps, and some sparing (about 30 min depending on day of the week). Then we do form. (again depending on day of the week) (10 min) Higher belts have individual instruction. We end with some more stretching. (5 min) Class lasts about 1 1/2 hour. (5:45 - 7:15) -
MMA Grading
torris replied to SoulAssassin's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
American Chung Do Kwon TKD, incorporates various different styles in addition to TKD high kicks. Our belt system is White, Gold, Orange, Green, Blue, Brown, 1st DAN, 2nd DAN, and Black, 1-10th DAN. We are to refer to higher ranking belts as Sir, or Ma'am at all times. 5th DAN and higher Black belt, we refer to them as Master . It is a sign of respect, which is a very important part of our Dojang. -
We have a rule similar to the original poster. "Outside of the Dojang conduct yourself like a representative of the martial arts. For example always show self control and try to avoid fighting and showing off." Master Shelton translated that to say, that when we pick fights, or show off, it brings dishonor to the martial arts, our school, and ourselves. We should honor our discipline, and our school by showing self control at all times.

I don't know a great deal about the style I am learning as I just started, but here is what I do know. The style is American Chung Do Kwon TKD. I know that board breaking is a requirment at the higher belt ranks. I know that in addition to traditional TKD, the style incorporates joint-locking, and throwing techniques from Okinawan arts, and at the Black belt level, you begin to learn Kobudo, and can learn weapons. Our school is a member of A-Kato and has very high standards. Our Master BB is a 9th DAN. That is all I know.

I am new in TKD and I was looking for information on the internet and something that I noticed was the belts are not consistent. For example, my Dojang has white, gold, orange, green, blue, brown, and black. Yet I have heard red, and what is "poom"? havent heard that before. Also, the minimum requirements for each seems to be inconsistent. Can someone explain how I can tell if I am being properly trained? Our school teaches American Chung Do Kwon -TKD I am really confused about it. Thanks.

What do you think about board breaking?
torris replied to Shorinryu Sensei's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
We had a board breaking Thursday and even though I didnt break any, I learned what I need to work on. I think board breaking is to focus as kata is to form. They are both important. As far as too easy. Tell it to my hand *ouch*! LOL! -
*humor* My first karate class!
torris replied to Shorinryu Sensei's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Being twice as tall as everyone in my class. Literally. I am this n00b in a room full of little Karate Kids. LOL! -
I don't have problems with the waist, but I do have issues with the pant leg. It always gets under foot. I just took them up alittle and fixed the issue. But, I was looking and I believe someone stated about Adidas. So I won't repeat.

I was a PC Junkie. Not much different. LOL! Man, the best thing about your position is the choice that you made. That you don't have to be. Any MA will do miracles on the flab (for sure) and you are going to learn some great self defense, and gain mental and physical confidence. Just find the style that fits you. For me, it was TKD.

Beginning Adults: Do you feel silly?
torris replied to asynk's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Hahaha! I don't feel so bad. I am 33 and just started. The only good thing about it (other than the obvious) is that there is another guy older than me in our school. It really is amazing though. We have one brown belt about 14, 2 blue belts, one couldnt be older than 8, and 2 green belts, not much older than 13 or 14. But, by far, most of us are white to orange. -
I go to class 4 times a week, but what I am interested to know is what do the more experienced people do to stay limber. Do you have a set routine, or what? I am still very new (week old) and I have been really impressed with how much my flexibility has improved, but what do I need to do the 3 days I dont have class. Should I just relax, rest, or what?

motivation for starting martial arts
torris replied to kle1n's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I am 33, and was in terrible health. My children decided that they wanted to join, so we ablidged, and after watching them, I decided that this was one dream I wasn't going to pass up. And WOW!, I feel great. -
Me too. My 3 kids started, and I was so interested I couldn't stand it anymore. Oh, and BTW, I have been in for just over a week, and I feel GREAT!. I haven't felt this good in yrs.

Kinda kewl to find the site, considering I am very new at MA. I am currently studying Tai Kwan Do, very new white belt. I have always wanted to do this, just never had the extra income. Well, now that I am getting older, I wanted to do this before I got too old (if that is even possible). I am from the D/FW area, in Texas, and have 3 children also studying.
