YIKES!!! Wish us luck! From NOLA.COM: New Orleans in Katrina's Cross-hairs The latest forecast track for Hurricane Katrina - issued at 4 a.m. CDT - has the strengthening storm crossing lower Plaquemines, then north on a line directly across the New Orleans metro area. The storm has intensified and is now a Category 3, with sustained winds of 115 mph and higher gusts. Some major models have it strengthening to a Category 4, or even Category 5 by landfall Monday evening. It is moving to the west near 7 mph and is approximately 430 miles southeast on the mouth of the Mississippi River. A gradual turn to the west-northwest is expected during the next 24 hours. Gov. Kathleen Blanco declared a state of emergency late Friday, making it easier to implement emergency procedures, including evacuations, if necessary. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin said he will make a decision about evacuations and other emergency procedures today about noon. http://www.goes.noaa.gov/GIFS/HUIR.JPG

When training for a tournament I have no problem getting through the workout, I just sometimes need motivation to get to training. So I think to myself "What is my competition doing right now? I'll bet they're training to kick my butt". That gets me out the door in a heart beat!!!

Well, we haven't heard from aefibird and I think I know why. She was at the 2005 World University Games. Here's a photo of Flyweight bronze medalist Elisha Voren with an aefibird: http://www.ustu.org/ElishaWithMedal.JPG and here's Charles Arnell Smith and Elizabeth Shakhnovich showing off their bronze medals and aefibird: http://www.ustu.org/arnelllizamedals2.jpg photos found on USAT website at http://www.ustu.org/90_1219.htm

I once did Basai as a demo in fromt of an entire grammer school and I forgot to do the side kick (Argggggh), which was my favorite part because I could get that kick just over head high. Do y'all do the side kick high or low? Here is a video of someone doing Basai and he does the kick at knee level: http://www.natkd.com/movies/NATKD_Forms/Bassai.wmv

I think Patrick is a civilian. Is that right Patrick?

Good luck, and just have fun. Don't make the tournament seem like all that big a deal. Make it seem more like a social event. Meet people and share expierences. Relax and enjoy. Also, if you are soaking your legs now then I'd suggest you rest them. Don't do any more practice. There's nothing you can fix between now and Saturday that will be engrained in your form. Warm up gradually before you have to compete. Don't pull anything before competition! Even if you are nervous, eat a good breakfast in the morning and drink a suitable amout of water before competition. Will you also be sparring?
-
younwhagrl, best of luck to you. Show them your best, and have fun. As far as sparring, just remember to breath and you'll do fine.

aefibird, A while back you posted that you were trying your hand (and feet) at Taekwondo. So how is it going? Can you give us an update? Last I heard you did very well at your first belt test.

Stress Management ... A lecturer, when explaining stress management to an audience, raised a glass of water and asked "How heavy is this glass of water?" The answers called out ranged from 6oz to 24oz. The lecturer replied, "The absolute weight doesn't matter. It depends on how long you try to hold it. If I hold it for a minute, that's not a problem. If I hold it for an hour I'll have an ache in my right arm. If I hold it for a day you'll have to call an ambulance. In each case, it's the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes. " He continued, "And that's the way it is with stress management. If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, as the burden becomes increasingly heavy, we won't be able to carry on. " "As with the glass of water, you have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again. When we're refreshed, we can carry on with the burden." "So, before you return home tonight, put the burden of work down. Don't carry it home. You can pick it up tomorrow. Whatever burdens you're carrying now, let them down for a moment if you can." "Relax; pick them up later after you've rested. Life is short, nnjoy it!" He then he shared some ways of dealing with the burdens of life: * Accept that some days you're the pigeon, and some days you're the statue. * Always keep your words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat them. * Always read stuff that will make you look good if you die in the middle of it. * Drive carefully. It's not only cars that can be recalled by their maker. * If you can't be kind, at least have the decency to be vague. * If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it. * It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others. * Never buy a car you can't push. * Never put both feet in your mouth at the same time, because then you won't have a leg to stand on. * Nobody cares if you can't dance well. Just get up and dance. * Since it's the early worm that gets eaten by the bird, sleep late. * The second mouse gets the cheese. * When everything's coming your way, you're in the wrong lane. * Birthdays are good for you. The more you have, the longer you live. * You may be only one person in the world, but you may also be the world to one person. * Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once. * We could learn a lot from crayons. Some are sharp, some are pretty and some are dull. Some have weird names, and all are different colors, but they all have to live in the same box. " A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour. Have an wonderful day and know that someone has thought about you today! (that would be me)

So, where is this church? I'm sure someone here is nearby and would like to volunteer to 'help out' at Sunday school too. YES!!! If he knows its going on and doesn't stop it he could be held liable under tort (injury) law. I wonder if he realizes this? Also, read my post on Stress Management in this forum.

For further reading, check out my article "Martial Arts for the Over 40 Crowd" at http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=14510 I consider glucosamine chondroitin the miracle drug. My kness were once in a condition that I was in constant pain. It hurt to drive my car, I suffered just putting my socks on in the morning, and forget about doing any training. I was told about glucosamine chondroitin by a cancer survivor and I started taking it. Within a few days I could put my socks on without pain, I could drive and walk comfortably. In about a week I was doing light focus pad drills. After 10 days I was back sparring again. I guess the moral to this story is, everybody's body is different and reacts differently to various stimulus, whether it be physical, mental, or even spiritual.

Twinkies? No, I think he has to stop stuffing his luggage with hotel towels, bibles, and ash trays. Then his luggage wouldn't be so heavy as to hurt his back.

scottnshelly I've never really tried. I kind of don't like doing forms. I'd rather spar. The most I've ever done back to back was 34 forms when I was preparing to test for 4th dan. I wanted to be ready in case they asked me to preform something that wasn't on the requirements list. See http://www.livaudaisnet.com/mafit/test/mafit4dan.htm

isshinryu5toforever, The lower level forms are pretty easy, what you do to the left you repeat to the right. If you look at the Korean flag you'll see 4 symbols in each corner; the forms follow those patterns. I've been doing TKD almost 13 years now. Our dojang has an eight week 'semester'. Each semester we change what family of forms we are doing, so I repeat each family every four months. Being an instructor I am obligated to be proficient at the lower level forms ( 1 - 8 ) in each family. As far as the higher level forms, I may need to review some a few times before I can do it completely on my own. My son (17 yo) has a much better knack for remembering forms. He also has learned as many as me and is an instructor too. I think our dojang does a total of 64 forms. Yes, I like that form, even though it gave me the most trouble at my 3rd dan testing. Last year both my son and I won our divisions at the AAU Regional Championships doing Yoo-Shin.

I included higher forms like Koryo, Keumgang, Taebaek, Pyongwon, Sip Jin, Jitae. Yes. Chon-Ji, Dan-Gun, Do-San, etc......and higher level: Kwang-Gae, Po-Eun, Gae-Baek, Eui-Am, Choong-Jang, Ko-Dang, Sam Il, Yoo-Sin, Choi Yong, Yon Gae, UL-JI, Moon-Moo, So-San.

I play guitar. I taught myself, my first songs were 'Take me Home Country Roads' and 'Heart of Gold'. One year I spent my whole summer learning nothing but Led Zeppelin songs. In college I played in a 'reception' type band. We did everything from Country, to Disco, to Rock. My acoustic is a Seagull S6 ( http://www.crossroads-music.com/guitar.shop/SeaGull/seagullgtr.html )and my electric is a circa 1971 Les Paul Custom. I also have a knock-about acoustic that I take out doors. I'm currently teaching my daughter how to play. I'm teaching myself Canon in D, I like the Christmas Canon arrangment by Trans-Siberian Orchestra (check out the video "The Christmas Attic- Christmas Canon" at http://www.trans-siberian.com/multimedia/video.shtml

I take TKD and HKD, but that was the first time I saw a HKD tournament. Looks cool. I'd like to see more too. Thanks for posting that. -

Great news! You've shown "stick-to-itness'. -
Based on the fact that "She's like 13 and she's been doing TKD for a year in Korea" I have these observations: She started at age 12, but did she have any previous martial arts expierence? Many folks here would argur that someone that age would not be mature enough to understand the full applications of the techniques even though they might be able to preform them with some perfected skill. At the dojang I attend we've had black belts from other dojangs join us and they were actually below our red belt level in skill, knowledge, and perfection of technique. You'll have to see how she measures up to folks who put in the time to earn their belts. I believe that in Korea, anyone under 16 do not receive a black belt, they receive a poom belt which is half red and half black. It's a probational, or junior, black belt.
