  1. So wear the adidas TKD shoes. Problem solved.
  2. Err, first off, Drunken Monkey, I don't know your styles, but you sound like a Wing Chun practicioner. Wing Chun practicioners like to make everything Wing Chun. Yes, Wing Chun and Classical Gung Fu are similar, especially the southern styles. Wing Chun is "refined" and actually is popular due to its simplicity and lack of demands on a modern day practicioner. Its economy of movement is valued however I find most of the things Wing Chun has that make it unique are things other styles take different routes to but end at the same goal.
  3. MartialMan, please, elaborate on your own views, instead of junking up a forum with statements like that. Of course it is a matter of opinion, opinions are all you can get from talking to people.
  4. Kung Fu is, unfortunately, hard to master to make effective. This is true in my style at least, but since it is a "dragon" style, it is really a more technical kung fu. Not to say we can't punch, but we follow the principals of dragon kung fu, flowing with all atacks and "dissapearing" and striking in the least expected time and place. Not all of it is like that, but that is the general goal in a fight. What is good about kung fu is it is extremely effective to masters of the techniques, but that is a redundant statement. In any case, Kung Fu is deadly and effective, in any style.
  5. Well, I don't know how you'd train iron finger, but if you want strong fingers, fingerprint and fingertip pushups are great for that. If you know how to do that, then the rest of this post is useless, but for anyone who doesnt: Fingerprint you will place the front part of the tip of your finger (Like you're giving away fingerprints to the police ) Fingertip you practice on the very tips of your fingers, the same way you would press playing guitar/violin/etc; If you cant do the pushups, try doing them on your knees, if you can't do that, just hold the pushup postition for as long as you can. Start out using all 10 fingers, then drop to 8, then to 6, then to 4, then to 2, and you will have tough fingers!
  6. Yes, jitsu does USUALLY mean it's Japanese, although these days people are creating arts like Shaolin-Do and Hun Gar-Jitsu, so, not a big mistake on your part.
  7. Developed for the Japanese police? And it's called Hoju-Jutsu? Sounds pretty non-Chinese. Anyway, I doubt such a style would survive to this day, it sounds rather rare and way too specialized to have modern day applications that would let it survive. If you can find any videos, however, I would be interested in learning about it. EDIT: Well, seems like I'm wrong. Hojojutsu is mentioned in some er.... adult sites but here is a school that teaches Hojojutsu as well as Obijutsu (Belt tying) aside from their curriculum of Karate and Jiujutsu. http://www.taiho-ryu-tx.com/4436.html
  8. I train on a canvas bag bare-handed. In fact, my entire school does. While we are not looking to get in fights, we are prepared by knowing what it feels like to hit something other than a pillow. I personally don't have any problems with bare-knuckle bag training, but don't go hog wild, if you don't have proper form you may hurt yourself.
  9. Very cool! We have one at our kwoon even though we are not a Wing Chun school.
  10. I thought Kendo used Shinai?
  11. If your goal is getting cut, perhaps some Cyclical Ketosis Dieting and High Intensity Interval Training is what you need. Check out bodybuilding.com for lots of cool stuff.
  12. Well, thats assuming the boxer trains as hard as you for the same amount of time as you, and if thats the case, sure.
  13. It was advice, he's going to go into a test and has to do pushups, so my advice is to start doing more pushups. If he did 225 pushups every day then the test's pushups would be just another day, wouldn't it? I just wished him good luck because that test is going to be "fun"
  14. I did that, I'm not looking for information on webpages, I'm looking for personal opinions and comparisons.
  15. No, I wouldn't say you need to outgrapple a BJJ guy. But then again in my art we don't practice grappling. However we do punch, as do most other arts. So instead of saying "Oh, well, since I've got legwork to do as well, I can train less on punches so I'm not spending as much time training" you should be training twice as long, training your punches just as strong as a boxer and training your legs with equal intensity. That way you have TWICE the skill, power, and speed of the Boxer, so you're not equal to him and need to fool around with him long-range. Thats not to say that theres no strategy to fighting, and no, I don't have the common western notion that you should just pummel through everything. However for me, I can't know my punches are less effective then any other style punches, especially since they're the same punch.
  16. You want a great quick boost of energy? Royal Jelly. http://www.heritage.com.sg/prod21.htm There are plenty of places you can get it, and I suggest getting the little vials so you can look like you have an addiction when you chug one before class.
  17. Wow, 6 years to create a style? Even if I trained 12 hours a week I wouldn't get a higher level sash in our system in just 6 years. But we're more traditional so we don't grade every month. And to think, he calls it "Red Dragon"... That's so very close to my style of White Dragon.
  18. Hehe, "JKD"kid? So, the art of no art wants to have multiple arts. Here is some thing I found on the web - I cannot reccomend it either way. http://www.flatbushshotokankaratedojo.com/ <--- Shotokan Karate, not mixed, but still a great art.
  19. Hey, don't compare Hercules in New York to KIAI Golf. The picture on the website kills me! She's wearing a Hakama, a polo shirt, a golf visor, and has a katana and some irons with her! LOL!
  20. Start doing more pushups? Good luck with that
  21. Just fight him? I mean, really, why would a boxer out-fight you if you have a non-sport oriented fighting style? If he advances, jam him! I would fight him in a straight line and jam him without second thought. There seems to be a notion that because you're not a "punching" style that you're allowed to have slower, weaker punches. Wrong. You should be able to box with a boxer without failure. Otherwise your punches are useless to you.
  22. Look around your area for schools. Moo Duk Kwan is pretty effective. (My brother takes it and can still whip me) Krav Maga is good, just dont kill them. Wing Chun is nice to learn as well.
  23. You could try it for yourself, you'd know if you're overtraining, you'll be all sorts of sore and have headaches and other symptoms that will let you know to back off and get a week of rest.
  24. It depends on your punching style, and this may be completely wrong, but I would assume you'd need the following muscles (primarily) to punch: Lats, Delts, Triceps, and Flexors. And thats just using arm alone. A bench press (Not close grip, and with proper form) would work the chest, which is useless in a straight punch. A pushup might be a little better off since it's more compound than a bench press but still doesn't translate directly into punching power.
  25. I hope they're joking
