  1. Stick to th basics. Take them through the same stuff that your teacher takes them through. Do it confidently and your teacher should be happy.
  2. I think so, too. The teacher said in 25 years teaching he's never had an injury from it. I wonder???
  3. Move at your pace. If you think you can handle full contact, try it. If you don't like it, stop. Best of luck in your training.
  4. Some of the things that Miyagi says in that movie are so deep. It's a great movie, a lot of thought went into producing it. I have it on DVD
  5. A game/warm-up that I have seen a few times in karate dojo here in Japan. The old wheelbarrow race, but the 'barrow' must use knuckles instead of flat hands. Not good for kids, but I thought some of you might like to try it with adults.
  6. Hi everyone Been looking around the boards for a while, thought I'd introduce myself. Have studied Goju-ryu. Hakko-ryu in Japan (left because of disagreements about the $$$ wanted for advanced training). Chibi
  7. welcome to KF
  8. welcome Bob
  9. those translations are absolutely 100% correct. No doubt about it.
  10. In class time I always wear a gi, but if I'm training in the afternoon and not doing any sabaki and/or throwing or grappling, I often train in a T-shirt
  11. ramymensa, you are correct. Phonetic changes occur with a lot of words in the Japanese language. As you said 'keri' when preceeded by another word, such as 'mae' becomes 'geri',..thats how we get 'maegeri'. Not only in the MA but in everyday stuff aswell.
  12. Setku-do. Japanese mixed martial art.
  13. I pulled a groin a few weeks ago so I've been working on my punching and blocking every day for 2 weeks.
  14. I trained in Japan, and I agree that the fee to do Shihan training is too expensive. I quit because of this. I think it works out to be $5000 US for Shihan training. And then another 5 or $6000 to do the last training. There are still a lot of people here that do it though. I never saw any real striking or any grappling here in Japan.
  15. If it's Japanese, 'ju jutsu' is correct.
  16. Just for the record, 'nunchaku' was taken originally from the Okinawan language, and is now a part of the Japanese language. 'Jool Bong' is not Japanese.
  17. Too much
  18. I believe Michael Lomonica teaches something called 'Hakko Denshin Ryu' which is a westernized form of Hakko Ryu. It involves strikes and grappling, unlike the Japanese form that is purely defence oriented.

    Sparring

Forget to say 'talk to your partner', let him know that your getiing hurt

    Sparring

You should not be getting hurt by your training partner. Try getting in close. (harder for him to kick you) Work on your foot work every day, it'll help you get out of the way of those low kicks. Work on your shin blocks. (instead of just stopping his kicks with your shin, give him a bit of a shove to put him off balance, then counter)
