Anyone is able to excel in the MA, as long as you do not attend a "McDojo" lead by a "Ronald McSensei" The right dojo and teacher is very important, but you must have the spirit and drive to accompish what you want to accoplish and strive to be your best. It may take longer for some people to excel, but don't worry, I am sure you will be fine. Don't worry about looking like the more experienced students in your class, just worry about what you look like and concentrate on your goals. As you are in the classes longer you will develope and change gradually. Everyone is different and your focus, stability, snappyness, power and wisdom will come in time. The best thing you can do is be patient! I hope my advice comes in handy. Good Luck, Train Hard, Never Give Up, Focus, and Be Yourself
  4. Let me see here Shotokan Karate has changed me a lot, but I also believe STONGLY that it also has to do with the people who teach you. Shotokan Karate and my Sensei (Jerry Bomay) have changed my life by: 1. Giving me strength to conquer what I want 2. Giving me a diff. perspective on Life and the World 3. Giving me much more respect 4. Giving me self control 5. Helping my self-esteem 6. Gives me the extra push to achive greatness 7. Well, I could go on for hours, but I will spare you all Just Remeber the Dojo Kun! Seek Perfection of Character Be Faithful Endevor Respect Others Refrain From Violent Behavior
  5. Congrats on your new belt!!! I wish you all the best of luck in your future years. Although I have never experienced my yellow belt (I skipped, not bragging) I remember my very first test, I was very nevous! Well I hope you stay in it and remember, no matter what people say to get you down, you are always appreciated when you are in you MA class, even if it is not always expressed. Congrats again, and good luck!

  7. Well, I am the first person to be in MA, but my dad influenced it! (I owe my dad my life because of it). I started in a school program, I quickly advanced to Black Belt (of which I am not proud of) Then my dad brought me to the Dojo that I am at now (Bassai Karate Academy)! I think my dad regrets it though, b/c he cannot keep me away from there! My friends all think I am obsessed, but look at them now, half of them are in MA with me!
  8. The Best that I am able to do is this... When the person is attacking, they put thier right hand under thier opponents head, the attacker sits on their right side and puts thier right leg up to the opponents head grabbing the oppenents right hand (the hand that is closest to the attackers leg) the attacker pulls the opponents arm accross thier stomache. *the legs are positioned like so: the right leg is lying flat, but bent..the left leg is propped up* now, the arm that is accross the attackers body is pinned there by the attackers arm (between the bicep and the left quad musle). That is pretty much all i can say about it, sorry it wasn't better.
  9. Here it is. If you want to join a MA to defend yourslef, thats cool. On the other hand, if you want to defend and hurt, that is wrong, you shouldn't even be allowed to step foot in a dojo. MA is not about hurting someone. Granted you learn a lot of cool stuff and new moves, but when diefending yourself, you have to do just enough to walk away safe, not leave the attacker sitting there spewing blood from his mouth. But if you want to join an MA that you can learn to defend yourslef, then try Shotokan Karate or BJJ.
  10. Recently my Brazilian Jiu-Jistu class has been studying the Judo Finishing Hold. There is a way to get out of it, so I am told by my instructor. He cannot remember how to escape. He said he had notes on it from the Gracies, but he is unable to find them. Does anyone know a website or anything that I can look at pictures or read a discription on? Or can anyone tell me? I would really respect your guidence, even if it is only a little piece of info. Thanks!
  11. I am going to agree with you. You can't attain ki by just flicking your finger. Ki is something that run throughout your body and is formulated with your Haza i believe. I will check on the Haza part. Anyways, "Haza" is body centering and mind centering. This is the first steps. I think of Ki as a steps. That is my opinion
  12. I hate Hein Nidan (Pinan Shodan<-old way, Pinan Nidan <- New way) it took me the longest time to get this kata! My Sensei says it is the kata that students look at and say "I am never going to get this kata". I agree with him

    Bunkai

    oh my goodness! you have no clue how much we do Bunkai. We so much Bunkai that we actually thin about it when we do every Kihon (this is a good thing) and you know the kata bakcwards because of it
  14. well, do not join shotokan karate. I play the bass trombone, and i can't count how many times i have broken a thumb or locked a joint in place. BJJ is not that bad, but it is still dangerous

  16. Hello, My advice is to take both. It is a lot of fun to take both, I do it. It does not mess up anything in either art. If by "karate" you mean shotokan karate, Jiu-Jitsu plays a big role in it. Basically I found over my eleven years of experience, they both play a vital role with each other. They go hand in hand, but if you just want one art, try karate first. It will focus your quicker, more discipline, and it will overall benefit you more.
