90% of all fights end up on the ground?
muaythaifreak replied to Mart's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
"because if get on the ground im donefore." You most certainly are if that is truly what you believe. With an attitude like that there's no point in even trying because you've defeated yourself before the altercation even takes place. "What the mind can concieve, the body can achieve." Try not to be so negative. You never know who you'll end up on the ground with, maybe you could beat them. Maybe they know less than you do, maybe you're stronger. Just an observation -

Top 10 Self Defense Martial Arts
muaythaifreak replied to aznkarateboi's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
As I have said before, sport muay thai is not the everything that traditional muay thai consisted of. It is a "sport" version of a battle tested art which included weapons, (swords, spears, and a multitude of other weapons. It also included grappling, throws, clinching, everything you described for "kung fu" as a generic label for all the styles involved. It is also true that Muay Thai is a generic term for all the martial arts styles included in traditional muay thai. The punch, kick, elbow and knee are the tools used in the ring. It goes much deeper than that if you research it. And I would say in order to master every facet of muay thai would surely take as long as it would to master every facet of Kung fu. If it were even possible. I cannot say that it is or is not being that I've never known anyone who had mastered it all. Basic weapons and their application. Krabi Krabong. 1.Krabi. Is very similar to a sable. It is used to stab, is thin and sharp ,metallic and is a ground weapon;Normally used by high rank soldiers. 2.Krabong. Is a wooden bar, made normally from Bamboo, It is 6 feet long. It is very easy to make one and very effective because of it's long range. Is normally a ground weapon and the people that used it are farmers that became soldiers. 3.Daab(Sword). This is the more popular weapon in the history of Siam. Sometimes the warrior held two swords (One on each hand), this is call "Daab Song Muun" They can be used to stab or slash the opponent. Normally a ground weapon and is a little more curved and heavier than a "Krabi". 4.NGAO(Spear). This weapon is to be used on Elephant-back or horse-back. Normally the King would use this weapon. There is an extensive variety of different spears. When the King was going to Battle on the sides of the Elephant he had different kinds of spears. The end of some look like a knife, others looks like a fork, and some like a sword. Some are for slicing, some to trap the opponents weapon, and some for stabbing etc. The spears consist of a strong and long wood pole and with a sharp metal end. The form changes1 depending of what kind of spear you are talking about. 5.Mae Sun Sowks. Is a ground level weapon ,made of hard wood or bone. They come in pairs, each one you wear iton the out side part of your forearm. The weapon is used to attack as well asto block .Because it is a close range weapon you can use it very well in close combat. 6.LOH(Round Shield). This weapon normally is used to block but you can strike with the edges as well. It is big and round, and is made of metal or skin. 7.DUNG.(Long Shield) This weapon is a different kind of shield, it is long and thing. It covers from the shoulder until your knee and is made of skin or metal and is "HEAVY"!!! 8.Kaen.(Medium Shield). This shield is rectangular like DUNG, but is not very long. It adjust well on your forearm. Made from the same materials as the other shields. Note:When we say that one weapon is to be used on the ground or on the horse and that only certain people use certain weapon,I mean... normally!! but in fact any person can used any weapon in any place. It's not any rule that says that you can or cannot. In a matter of fact the warriors were all well trained in each weapon not just in one. -

Your knowledge of Muay Thai is lacking, therefore your opinion is biased. I however have sparred with MANY practitioners of several different KF disciplines, of varying experience. I have had "dim mak" demonstrated upon my person. I am not dead by the way, nor did it make me ill or damage my person. Not to say mind you that I can take from this that all "dim mak" practioners are bogus. I would however have to experience it firsthand to become a believer. From my experience with Kung Fu, I've never known it to work, nor have I ever seen it work. Unless of course it was KF vs. KF. I do however know that in the seventies several KF masters went to Thailand and challenged some Thai boxers to a contest. I don't recall exactly how long they lasted, but none went to the second round. -
Be careful showing up in force with backup. That will more than likely lead to an ego thing, probably escalating things. I'm all for confronting things and nipping them in the bud, but you have to do it with finesse. Kill 'em with kindness so to speak. If you do confront them, I'd do it passively. Until passivity is no longer an option.

What brand?
muaythaifreak replied to N.O. Muay Thai's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
Twins are definately one of the best. Ringside are also, and fairtex makes decent ones too. I've had my Twins for four years and have never had to have them repaired, they are showing some serious ware but I think they have at least another year or two in them. -
Lets Discuss the "Dim Mak" (Death Touch)
muaythaifreak replied to GoldDragon's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I thumped my sister on the nose, she's gonna die from it in like sixty years, maybe less. Who knows, it could take the form of cancer, heart attack, you just never can tell. Dim mak works in mysterious ways!! -

I believe, and correct me if I am wrong, that he is alluding to the fact that in MT the basic fundamental skills of fighting are taught at a much earlier point in the training than they are in other MA's. In that sense anyway I would agree that MT is "easier". However, I fail to see how this is a flaw rather than an advantage as you are a better fighter sooner. -

Don't discount aggression completely though. Aggression can be your friend but like anything else, it needs to be in moderation. An aggressive posture can in fact intimidate your opponent and cause them to doubt their own intentions and abilities. Aggression implies self confidence, self confidence, even false self confidence can intimidate if seen as real by your opponent. It is a fine line though. And intimidation is a large part of fighting. A scared opponent, as you know, can be less aggressive and therefore less dangerous.

I'm confused, are you talking about in like the thirties or something? I lived in Okinawa for over a year and don't recall any shoe shortages. Perhaps you're referring to the poor who cannot afford shoes?

I use leg kicks A LOT. They are very effective for many reasons, first of all, if they don't check, it hurts like crazy especially the fourth or fifth time to the same leg. It's also a great demoralizer and it makes them concentrate more on your leg kicks, opening them up for other things. After I've got em running from my leg kicks I like to raise my right knee, like I'm goning to kick again, and at the last moment shift my weight and throw an overhand right to the head. I catch a lot of people off guard like this. A lot of places and venues don't allow leg kicks and sweeps and therefore a lot of people really don't train for it all that well. When I'm working pads I have my partner throw leg kicks at me a lot, that way my leg checks are automatic and it's very hard to catch me with one as a result. Try kicking to the inner thigh of the lead leg too, some people don't expect this and if you land it, not only will it hurt, but with enough force it may even send them sprawling. Leg kicks are one of my favorite techniques.

No Problem, I try to be as non confrontational as I can, but apparently my choice of words is sometimes lacking a bit of finesse. But I mean no offense or disrespect to anyone. -
Good idea, this forum doesn't see the action the others do as MT practitioners seem to be the minority. As to your question, I have a heavy bag in my garage and although a lot of space has to be commited to it to benifit from having one, it's a big help. I also have a leg kick pad (2'x2' square by 5" deep.), Thai pads, and focus mits. Of course you'll need gloves, and wrist wraps. Never hit the heavy bag without wrapping your wrists and if you do, don't hit really hard. It's very hard on your wrists. I also make regular use of a jump rope, and I have an old truck tire that I use to strengthen my calves. If you can find a good feeder, all you really need are the thai pads. If you're working out alone, the bag is your best bet.

No, my point was not that MT and BJJ are superior to anything else. I was comparing the one against the other. No implication was made towards any other arts, they are just simply the first ones to enter my head. Therefore, the comparison was made between those two. My point was that MT has inherent advantages over BJJ and vice versa. Nothing more was said or meant by it. -
