Shaolin Kung Fu
ahultqui replied to plainwhitets's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
Yup Likewise for us, in our school, we have 2 sifu's (both brothers) and one sigun(not sure on the spelling), the Sigun and one sifu went to a Shaolin temple to train but like the previous post, they don't talk about it. And well I can't just expect him to As was also said I don't think many forgien people go to train there, either that or they are not welcome I guess ? -
Wing chun
ahultqui replied to overkill's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
Ok, well I am no expert in the subject, but I have now for three months been doing Wing Chun, and I have to point out a few things I have noticed: 1. When sparing with a fellow student, the fighting itself was very close, no "OH LET ME RUN AND DO A COOL FLYING KICK". all close combat wing chun punchs, inner and outer circular kicks, and I also noticed myself using one or two moved from our first form. 2. When sparing against a student from another school who does JKD, while I was all for the motto of "Get stuck in, and don't run away, he was very hesitant to engage in "close" combat, I.E if I wanted to do a zig zag step so as to get around and punch him (softly ) in the ribs, he would back away very very quickly. In general I am not completly sure, I have seen a few forms being performed, but I must say , Wing Chun is really great, its taught me alot, and also taught me alot of respect for my instructors, because I can see how hard they have worked to get where they are, I am NOT saying any one other form is worse than wing chun, I am just saying this from my personal opinion vault ! Anyway, I need to catch up on the forums, been away for awhile and well I don't know whats happening..... *sheepish grin* -
Report Back

Yup, sorry about being so vague in my answer, thing is being new I am not sure about alot just yet, I am sure of one thing though, the workouts and stretching I do is fun OK I LIE, I dont like being stiff after the class, but thats only because I am new to the whole scene. But anyway, its late, and I really should be asleep -

HMMMMMMMMMMM Basically we started learning some nice stretching excersises. Ok I havent been involved in much excersice for awhile now owing to my job, but this was nice, ok granted I felt as stiff as hell after the first lesson but its to be expected, after the second lesson I wasn't as stiff. We also started learning our fisrt form(If thats the correct way to describe it) Stuff like 1. Basic Kicks 2. Basic Punches 3. First Form. When I say kicks and punches, we were taught how to stand, how you should be standing when punching, and some theory behind it all. Sorry if this is a big vague, but man its busy @ work today ! Got to run ! -
Well I must say, I started MA at the beginning of this week(Started so late because of previous commitments) and well here is my little report back. 1. Its fun, I dont care what anybody says or does, I find it to be fun, and at the same time enjoyable, those people who say "Wait until later", well you are wrong, I dont believe in things like that, and well generally yes ! 2. Very Strict: I have noticed that the respect found between class mates, to your instructor and to other such people to ve very strict and rigid, I actually dont mind, just that one of the things I noticed, I actually think its good to be like this, I find that even after a week, my class mates and I have developed a mutual respect for one another, nobody looks down on anyone, and its actually a friendly place to go ! 3. Fitness: Well Well Well, I mean yes I have been into swimming and general gym workouts for the past 4 years, but nothing compares to the workouts we do at MA, I dont mind one bit though, its nice and fun, and its good to break a sweat ! 5. Friendly enviroment, while at the same time as being rigid and strict about respect and certain aspects of MA and the class, I have come to find the people in the class, instructors and just about everyone to be damb friendly ! The Head SiFu(Frank) is also a really nice and friendly guy, but yes when things need to be done they get done, and well I think this is actually good. Its almost well actually its like having a friendship with certain respect and boundries. Anyway, I will write more when I have learnt more, on it seems the style they teach is wing chun, or so it seems ?

Um maybe this is just my new commer type view of MA in general, but I dont see the fighting aspect of it being taught solely for the real world, sure LOTS of people go to MA classes to learn self defence, but I dont think in essence, that this is the real driving force behind teaching MA and why MA has become so popular around the world. I also dont believe that the training has to be based in reality, the training itself can be used for a number of reasons, Self Defence as I mentioned above, fitness, mental and religious well being ?

I never said that I dont excercise. 1. I dont eat Junk food 2. I run every day. 3. I swim every evening. Its not that I am being lazy, about the only time I have to sit in a chair is when I am work :\ Which actually sucks, I would love to quit my job if I could and do something more exciting ! But at the end of the day I need a job that can pay the bills, and if I have to sit infront of a pc during the day todo it, well then I will do what I have todo :\

6 second abs? Ab king pro? sit-ups? Spot reduction?
ahultqui replied to koreantiger81's topic in Health and Fitness
I think what I find funny in these videos, is they show the people with these AMAZING bodys, and they say "IF YOU WANT A BODY LIKE THIS", what they have done in South Africa, the main company who markets these products, the neglected to mention the fact that the product would only work in conjunction with a specific and specilized diet, as well as excersise ! They were forced to take their add's off the tv, and only allowed to put them back on with the respective changes! What is the real kick in the jaw, is the products cost, and I mean they product will also only work if you keep it up, alot of people I know dont bother after a week, because it just becomes to much hassle :\ GOOD OLD fashioned swimming, running and eating healthy have worked fine for me for the past while ! So its what I will stick to ! -
krunchyfrogg: Do you know where I could read up about the "South Beach Diet" ? I am not to fond of diet programs but the one you specified does not sound to bad, Basically before I started to consider martial arts, I was a regular at the gym, and I basically followed a Rapid fat loss + Muscle building diet, which if anyone is interested, can be found at https://www.usn.co.za ! It worked bloody well, I lost 7kg's in 2 weeks, but in my honest opinion, thats abit unhealthy. But as it stands I am willing to try anything, purely because I dont know where to start. Obviously with my Martial Arts, I will start and as is planned I go to 2 lessons a week, and on every other day I will go to the gym and swim, but I am basically looking for a diet program to suit my schedule and MA trainging Will let you all know what I find !

Yup. I have been noticing in my reading and research alot of things about muai thai, anyway, I will go to my first class, and see what happens, basically the instructor,(when I spoke to him on the phone) said they teach a wide variety of styles, and therefore I would be able to select what I am interested, that is of course assuming the following. 1. I actually get into MA properly. 2. Well yes Anyway time to go get something to eat !
-
Yup Well I am starting my first lesson at the beginning of june, signed up for a month just to see what its like and well we shall have to take it from there, the guy who will be teaching me seems nice enough ! Will let you all know how it goes. BTW: just for sheer bordems sake, heres a link the the place/guy who I will be learning from. http://www.shaolin.co.za/randburg.html

Just curious as to a reccomended diet plan and eating plan ? Generally speaking I have a idea of what I should be doing, just curious as to what other people have to say ? and also what other people in MA do ?
-
I was just wondering what everybodys feelings on Muai Thay ? I have been speaking to a friend about it, and in terms of self defence it sounds like the ultimate option, this may just be my thinking, but its mainly because I am as I said in my last topic, completly new to the scene, and therefore I dont quite know everything :\ Any opinions ?
