i started because i've just always wanted to taken MA lessons and become a MAist, mostly i guess because i want to know how to defend myself or fight others... but now that i've actually gotten into it, i stay in it because its a way of life for me. plus it gets me into GREAT shape

imo, most karate tae kwon do dojos are mcdojos, the majority of them

i have nothing to spend money on, so i think i may try this "system" to see how * crazed it really is

they try to humble themselves by saying they aren't high level, so they will have a reason to try to better perfect their way of life

o, oops, sorry, i didn't realize that.. i shall refrain from posting this way anymore... quick question... does anyone here know how effective wing chun is? and how long on average does it take to get to a level where you know enough to defend yourself?

because there aren't any shorin-ryu dojos in portland. what i'd like to do is find a foundation art and get at least black belt/sash (the ones i was thinking of which i have found in or around portland are wing chun, enshin karate, and budo taijutsu) and then crosstrain in MT and BJJ so i can know how they work and so i can find ways to defend myself against a boxer and ground fighter/grappler. IMO the best way to defeat a grappler or boxer is to learn how to grapple and box so that i can find weaknesses. i've found a school in oregon that teaches muay thai and jiu jitsu.

well you see, regarding the posting in every major section.... i wanted to make sure that if the person who had info about where the schools in oregon are and what types there are only visits certain topics on the MB that he would eventually see this message... also does anyone know what enshin karate is?

Hello all, just wondering...does anyone know if there are any truly effective karate dojos in the portland area of oregon? i found one style i've never heard of, enshin karate? anyone ever heard of it? and if so how effective is it? cause the dojo its at looks very very effective. thanks!

Hi all, I'd like to know if anyone here knows of a school in the Portland/Tigard/Mcminnville area of Oregon that teaches an authentic effective self defense chinese martial art? Any knowledge anyone has will be greatly appreciated.

Hey all. As I said in the subject line, I'm moving to Oregon and I want to start a new style since I'm moving. I've been looking online at dojos around to see what type of arts there are and I've found a few schools that look really good. I've found two Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu schools, and one school that teaches quite a few arts. The first taijutsu school is taught by a man named Peter Kramer, there's no website and he sent me an e-mail that had a few photos in it and it seems like he teaches his classes in his garage. The next taijutsu school is named White Lion Tenchijin Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu, and it's taught by Jef Burgus (sandan) who trained under Bill Atkins (shihan) who was a personal student of Grandmaster Masaaki Hatsumi. The last dojo I found which I found interesting is called: Oregon Martial Arts Club Inc. And it's teachers are; Steve Ward, Scott McQuary, and Robin Lewallen. This dojo teaches severl arts, which are; Enshin Karate (can someone tell me how good this art is? if it is at all) Muay Thai, a hybrid Jiu Jitsu, Judo, Pankration and Chanbara. i like the belt system, it works well for how i learn. why do you think there are grades in school? why not just all learn together? it just doesn't work well that way. though i would cut back on how many kyu's i have. in my dojo we have: white, yellow, yellow w/ stripe, orange, orange w/ stripe, blue, blue w/ stripe, green, green w/ stripe, green w/ two stripes, brown, brown w/ stripe, brown w/ two stripes, black. imo, i would have it: white, blue,green,brown,black.

we don't meditate. our dojo is christian run and the spirituality of the stuff is taken out, we bow after going into attention stance and such and right before/after class and to the sensei after we talk to him, but we don't meditate. no offense to you guys but we think it seems kind of ridiculous and not worth the time. geeze, you'd think with all the "we"'s you'd think i were schizophrenic...am i? naw, course not. ok, good

if you're supposed to see how good your technique is, why don't you substitute the boards/bricks for your sensei? he/she can judge how well you kick or punch and if you utterly sucked he can just kick you back

i wouldn't take a thing out of my style, i'd like to add more grappling and throws, but i don't know what they teach the black belts and above in my style

ooo, that last one (kicks) is a goodie, i may try that one when i get older! lol

whatever drunken.... the reason i was asking was because i was planning on moving to oregon when i once i get my associates degree. and i said to myself, i might as well learn a new art when i move. but my dads applying for a promotion and it looks like i might be moving to oregon by the end of the year, or the beginning of next year. and since i was going to have to join a new dojo, i wanted to know what would be the best combative art for me? i don't care if i stay with karate. i want an art thats been proven effective for self defense, incorperates at least one realistic weapon, and is a complete art. and if its not too much to ask, could you guys look and see if there are any really good dojos in the portland/tigard/mcminville area? thanks
