  1. I work as an event security guard at all kinds of places. even things that aren't events like cinema's in Amsterdam etc. most of all i work at concerts and sports events.
  2. the thing with learning disabillities is that you don't always know. sometimes when a child has bad results in school it takes a lot of time to find out why,, it can take up to years. how can a martial arts instructot judge a child on this type of issues? It's even complicated for psychologists and that kind of people to find out.
  3. actually gimgamgommetje means nothing. Whehe I guess not Dutch speaking persons will get a throat ache trying to pronnouce this as it should be The reason I made this up was that my own name was taken at forums, chatboxes etc. where I went so I needed some name that no one else would think off. Well so far so good. the name is quite long and it's really funny to see how many people make it shorter, they call me gim, gimgam,, gommetje ,ggg, tripple g, etc.
  4. I agree with the fact that instructors should be concerned with the students even outside the dojo. However I have mixed feelings about making the marks in school a part of this. If for exampel the child has learning disabillities he might get bad marks because of that but it's really not his fault. Martial arts could be something he's good at and something that improves his selfconfidence. However if the martial arts instructor says to be ashamed of bad results etc. that will have a negative result. When it comes to results in school, often there is more to it than just doing your homework and pay attention in class. I personally think it is not up the martial arts instructor to judge on that. There are too many other factors that play a part. So where would you draw the line in this issue?
  5. I think 23 is an excellent age to start. you are old enough to make good choices about what and where to train. you are young enough to still have 70 years of training ahead of you ,,,,,,,,anyway have fun, men and women of all ages enroll in nearly any type of martial arts so i see absolutely no reason why not to.
  6. I find it a bit hard to find the right words in English, but I'll try to make clear what I would like to discuss. I've heard a lot of times about women and girls who quit a self defense class or martial arts class after 1 or 2 classes because they do not feel emotionally safe enough to join. The biggest reasonI've heard so far is that martial arts ans martial arts instructors tend to be very physical. For example an instructor will easily grab an arm to put it in the right position etc. For a lot of women it tends to be uncomfortablethat another man or woman touches them. This can be the result of sexual abuse in the past, but does not necessarily have to be. I think this is too bad because especially the most vulnerable women would benefit from martial arts or self defense training in my opnion. Does anyone have experience with this issue either as an instructor or a student. How can you create a training environment safe enough for them to join, but still train them effectively? Lex
  7. Hello , My name is Lex, 24 year old from the Netherlands. I've been lurking here for a little while and decided to sign up. My main interest is self defense issues and personal security. I've practised boxing for about 10 years. Jiu jitsu for about 4 or 5 years (2nd kuy) and MMA for lil over a year. I have signed up for a instructor course krav maga (ikmf) wich starts saturday. I hope to learn some new things there. Especially another way of training. I'd like to instruct self defense classes and be able to adjust them to the needs of the group I teach. Therefor besides martial arts I focuss on a lot of other aspects of self defense as well. I guess you'll find out about that in my postings. I hope to learn a great deal from you guys. I've noticed there are a lot of experienced people on here. And in some cases I'm more interested in opnions from less experienced people, so i need you all Ofcourse I'll try to bring in my two cents when I feel I have something to add bye, Lex
