In a previous posting regarding World Oyama Karate vs Kyokushin, I mentioned that we had one of Sensei Fred Buck's students join our dojo in San Francisco, when the Sacramento Kyokushin school closed down. I stated that the student thought WOK in San Francisco was more technical than the Kyokushin training he had received in Sacramento and that this student preferred it. This could be misconstrued as me (or the student) "dissing" Fred Buck's school. This is NOT the case. This student has nothing but the very highest regard for Fred Buck and the school. I would like to take this opportunity to set the record straight and to publicly apologise to Fred Buck and any of his students who may have thought I was knocking their school or their teaching methods. I hope we have the opportunity to train or compete against each other in the future. Osu! ET

Kevin, Mas Oyama was Korean. He was adopted by Soshu's family so Soshu and Saiko Shihan are essentially his half brothers. He took the name Oyama from their family. Get a copy of the 1970s "Hardest Karate" Vol 2. This shows the then Saiko Shihan of Kyokushin (Soshu) and Saiko Shihan training Shihan Miura. Get yerself to San Francisco June 12th for our first tournament Osu! ET

Dijita, There will be semi-knockdown too, so come on over, you'll be fine. Besides, San Francisco is a much nicer place than LA OSU! ET

Dijita, We are hosting the first San Francisco open knockdown championships in June. All styles are welcome but we are fighting Kyokushin rules. Fighters are coming from Japan, and all over the US. You are more than welcome. Osu! ET

Paul, World Oyama Karate, San Francisco is hosting it's first tournament in late February/March 2005. We will be having semi-knockdown (kids and adults) and knockdown(adults only). So far several dojos have been invited including Karate Juku from San Diego, World Oyama Karate Atlanta and Alabama, Kyokushin LA and Enshin SF. You would be more than welcome Osu! ET

Whenever I mention other styles or dojos to my sensei, his reaction is always the same: "Oh really? - how do they fight" I guess you can see what's important to us Osu! ET

In our style (and kyokushin) we are taught that all punching power comes from the legs and all kicking power comes from the upper body. So it doesn't matter what punch you throw. If it doesn't start in your ankles and come up through your knees and your hips you will not have enough power. Gyakuzuki espescially Osu! ET

Are you pivoting the supporting foot when delivering a high roundhouse? You supporting heel should end up pointing towards the target if you are doing it right Osu! ET

I was joking Angela, 'cause I knew I'd get a rise out of you or bird Osu! ET

Kumite is traditional Sport karate is based upon pads, head gear, pulling punches and point system tournaments. You'll have to ask the shotokan guys about it - I don't do it Osu! ET

You need to spar with someone of high enough grade that can exercise precise control on their fighting with you and "allow" you to hit them without hurting you back. Once you realise that the other guy isn't going to harm you, you will be more relaxed and think less about getting hit and more on your own technique. This is my experience and the way I spar with lower belts now. Osu! ET

I did Shotokan and TKD in my youth and started a hard Kyokushin style (WOK) at 37. I just turned 40 and graded for (and passed) my brown belt two days before my 40th birthday. I train hard and religously (well it's become my religion now ) and wouldn't give it up for anything. We have lots of people around my age. A lot train with their kids too. We have a few brown belt kids with white belt mum and dads that have come to train after watching everyone enjoy themselves So, in answer, no you're never too old! My sensei says "karate begins at 40!" Osu! ET

Osu! I thought Kyokushin rules were: 1. Knockdown: No hand guards, no shin guards and only a groin cup and mouth guard allowed. 2. Semi-knockdown: Shin guards, hand guards, head guards, groin cup and mouth guard. If this is your first knockdown and they are allowing you a choice, I'd defineltey use shin guards just on the off-chance one of your opponents is and you get smashed up bad by him. Osu and good luck! ET

Like everything else in Karate, the more you practice the more you realise it's a personal thing and there is no room for judging others, only judge yourself. You need to destroy the ego through hard training. Obviously some people don't train hard enough Osu! ET

Osu Kevin, We have a few fighters coming to the Alabama tournament in December. I think all are fighting full-knockdown, not semi-knockdown though. I train karate 3 days a week and sometimes 4. I do weight training for strength (pyramid style) twice a week for around 1.5 hours a session. At home I practice tonfa and do heavy bag workouts on my roof (at least until the rains come next week). Osu! ET

I'm continually doing it, but with much worse results I've broken two toes on my right foot and cracked a bone in my left ankle. I did it again last weekend sparring and think I've fractured a bone where my big toe joins on to my foot. I'm not going to get it x-rayed because there's not a lot they can do anyway. I can walk on it and that's all that matters. Just got to learn to kick more accurately I guess Osu! ET

You should check out Kyokushin as well. They do sai, nunchaku, bo and tonfa training. There is a dojo in your town too: http://www.dolphinkarate.com/Jurupa/Jurupa.htm Osu! ET

Yeah I got it!!!!! Feels SOOOOOO good it's not even funny Three broken ribs, two broken toes, one fractured bone in my ankle, two cracked ribs and numerous scrapes and bangs, but two years of hard work and a lot of sweat paid off. Osu! ET

We know up to brown belt. From there on up, only Soshu, Sailo Shihan and Shihan's can grade brown belt to black. Only Soshu and Saiko Shihan can grade black belts. This way they maintain the quality of the style I guess. Anything BUT a McDojo Osu! ET

Thanks for the kind words guys. Last night, I sat the written test, now sensei says if I pass the test he has to talk to Saiko Shihan and see if he gives me my brown belt. I should know by Monday next week. Osu! ET
