Hello, it appears that some of you may give me some advice on how to arrange a training schedule to attain a better physical potential. At the moment I am doing Karate - Do twice a week, which -in my eyes- isn't really demanding. What would you recommend to do in order to improve strength, power, and endurance ? How would you combine weight training, running and Ma training ?

Which MA shall I choose

What does American Kenpo consist of ? What are the main elements of this MA ? What is the difference in between Kempo and American Kenpo ? -
Which MA shall I choose
Anando replied to Anando's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
In my area there is a whole lot of different clubs offering many different MAs. Judo, Jiu Jitsu, Kung fu, Karate, Jukate, TKD, JKD, Wing Chun. @karatekid1975 why should I choose a soft style ? What do you mean ? Does anyone of you know Jukate ? What is it like ? @delta1 Actually I have heard about an International American Kenpo school around the area. What is special about Kenpo if compared to other MAs ? -
Hello, actually this is one of these threads that exist at great number, but I would appreciate if you could give me some advice. I am interested in MA, but I have made some disappointing experiences. I once started Karate and Jiu Jitsu but both appeared to be too static and the movements were too rigid. I am looking for a MA that consists of fitness (to increas strength, endurance and body-control) combined with effectiveness. I am not averse to any traditional MA but I would prefer an art that concentrates on fitness and effectiveness. Furthermore I am not that interested in Kickboxing as my local club seems not to favour getting rich over a good class-atmosphere.

Hello, I would like to join in the conversation and ask some questions myself. I as well am looking for a martial art that demands great effort from your body while practising. I also would like to know which martial art contains basic moves that may be applied not just in the dojo but also in a real fight. I have been practising Karate and Jiu Jitsu and I gained an insightful impression of how realistic these moves are. Mostly it is getting too complicated to learn the moves in a way that it doesn't hamper their effectiveness. To get to an end, apart from the athletic aspect, I would like to know which martial art combines fitness (increase in strength, endurance,...) and effectiveness ?

Thanks for the insightful explanation. I guess I got the gist of it. I will try to convert the technique into a useful defence punch, just as you said. Thanks a lot.
-
@cross Well what do you mean by modified ? How do I need to modify the technique ?
-
Thanks, it does help to the extent that I know that I will need to learn a few more techniques. I guess that is the reason why I was so confused on the topic sparring.
-
How do I have to construe " I've been a defender of it in the past "? Do you practise another MA by now ? Which MA would you consider worthwhile studying with regard to self - defense ?
-
How do you actually spar when you are doing Karate - Do ? As far as I know there is only one technique which is called Choku Tsuki. In my opinion this technique is kinda rigid so I don't really know how to practise sparring ? Could anyone help me ?

Thank you, it appears that the book is quite informative. I probably should get the book to make up my own mind whether it works for me or not. Thanks for the information.

Could anyone explain to me what makes up the difference in between Shotokan Karate and Karate - Do ?

@dragonlord I am doing Karate-Do which is pretty much based on Shaolin MA. What is so special about it ? @cross Actually my trainer resent competition and therefore our club doesn't participate in any competitions. We are more focussed on the techniques. We do practise against partners but in my opinion training appears to be pretty static. Once in a while we just spar against a wall to invigorate our knuckles. We deliberately neglect the technique and try to focuss on how to perfectly hit the wall. By doing this I got the feeling that simple natural boxing seems to be more flexible and effective. Most techniques are performed in combination with a certain body position. What should I do if my enemie isn't standing right in front of me, but just a few inches further away, or further to the left ? So probably we do not get enough information on how to apply these techniques in reality. But how could I learn it ? After reading through this post, I get more and more the impression that Karate is a way to move your body atypical to the natural movements that are ingrained in our human mind. So when it comes down to a real fight it rpobably gives you the opportunity to appply a wider diversity of different movements to defend or attack your opponent. But it is questionable whether you are able to correctly apply the and perform certain techniques.

Hello, I am interested in kick-boxing or even Muay Thai. When I looked up some clubs around my area, I was quite disappointed at some brutal young students and at the trainers who didn't appear to teach kich-boxing as a MA but rather as a way to destroy your opponents vital body parts. So unfortunately the stereotypical behaviour of a boxer has been confirmed by my visit. Is there any way how I could determine whether a club consorts with competent trainers and serious students ?

Well actually I looked up a few books at google and amazon but mostly they had bad annotations. Often the peoples' opinions who have read the book diverge into two different directions. Some say the book is fantastic absolutely essential for Karate, some say that it wouldn't be worth buying it because the explanations are wrong or whatever. So I am quite confused, which one I should buy as a personal encyclopedia for Karate.
-
I guess it's called Shaolin Karate-Do. Since I didn't know that there were so many different styles of Karate my post wasn't clear enough. I am looking for a book that explains as 'Shorinryu Sensei' said the basic techniques of Karate. I do appreciate G95champ's recommedation and I will try to look for it.
-
Thanks for the info. So it is important to be patient and practise a lot until you may apply Karate. I guess it is just the same as with everything else. Thanks a lot.
-
yeah right, actually I am looking for a book that explains the techniques used in Karate - Do, but since Karate - Do is pretty much based on Karate I guess there is not much difference to it. Karate - Do adopts the basic techniques from Karate. I hope that this specification helps to answer my question.

Thanks for your confirmation and encouragement.

Hello, I am not quite sure whether the topic I am going to talk about fits in this subtitle but we will see. I wanted to ask whether someone is able to recomend me a book that lists and explains all techniques used in Karate ?

Hello, I am doing Karate for a few months and I am wondering whether someone is able to tell me if I could apply Karate as a self-defense in real life. To my regret one of my trainers told me that a good boxer may be able to esily defeat a 1grade Dan Karate fighter. What do you think about it and is Karate as a martial art effecitve and applicable in real life ?
