I'm looking for a diagram/video of both Bo kata Tenryu No Kon, and Gekkisai. If anyone has them or knows where I can go to get them I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks Mc. Steve, you rock.

What title does your instructor have?

All of this discussion on biased judging is very interesting. What do your dojos do when it comes to combatting this issue? At the last goodwill tournament I attended the judges were cycled each competition. If a student, son/daughter, or other relative, was competing in that particular event they would be swapped out for another judge. I'm sure that this allowed for a more objective judging experience since you were evaluated by a judge that didn't know you or was related. -

Is the Samurai Sword the same as a Katana, or is it a different sword? Thanks

While definitely considering that one's capability is a major factor, I was informed by a Master that the international stage is quite biased when it comes to the Japanese. Something regarding the dscipline needed in their training and them considering the North American training is subpar by their comparison. Now I'm acutely aware that one's own perceptions and biases influence their opinion, and I have not yet seen this for myself, but I will definitely look for this if I ever get the opportunity to check out an international event. Has anyone ever noticed something like this?

Ha ha ...lunge punch. Not lunch.
-
I'm almost 6' and I sparred with someone who was 7'2''--very tall but not heavy. He has amazing reach, and it was very challenging. I found strong press blocks were effective against him so I could jump/lunge into range and score. Another thing that helped was his stances. They were quite high, so it was easier to sweep his leg and take him off balance. This made him hesitate, thus allowing a lunch punch or kick. Hope that helps.

Definitely Sensei or Master while in the dojo and the first name outside of the dojo. Simply osu if we are passing by as a sign of respect. This is definitely an acknowledgement of the years of commitment and training Sensei has gone through to earn their position. It is also an agreement between us that they are the teacher and I the student. -
The nikkyo technique is whereby the aggressors energy is focused on their palm and turned back in the direction of their elbow, destroying their posture and thus throwing them off balance. This can be used very effectivey to break a forearm if I'm not mistaken, but I do know that the opponent and be taken down to the floor with this technique.

Ah, well to each his/her own.
-
I tend to agree that it isn't the hardest. But I think to simply state it has no effect on the ribs is erroneous. I am not sure how many styles use this technique, but if it was ineffective it would not be used. I have seen many karateka use this technique and cause great damage to their targets.

True, another point would be that common sense plays a large factor in a lot of bunkai and MA styles.
-
I have done this already with my Sensei, these are both effective techniques and we've used the latter technique in a demonstration a while back. Well, I've moved into Sanchin-dachi from this while performing a counter and been able to retain my balance and effectiveness. But in my previous post I didn't mean to "move away from" back stance, sorry for the confusion.

Yes in a way, you can be grabbing their forward arm and brining them closer, so that your strike will land. You are in backstance still because it is a very stable stance for the hikite in this sense, and the counterattack is also strong.

Here is an excerpt from a site I found, http://www.martialway.com/celebrities/white/white.htm "Michael Jai White holds six black belts of varying degrees in six different Martial Arts forms. Beginning his Martial Arts training at the age of eight and achieving his first black belt at the age of twelve, he now has over twenty years of experience. Originally a student of the legendary Shigeru Oyama, world renowned head of the U.S. Kyokushin Karate Association, White went on to achieve black belt in five other MA styles; Shotokan, Tae Kwon Do, Kobudo, Goju Ryu and Tang Soo Do. He has also had years of Wu-Shu/Kung Fu training under current American Wu-Shu team coach, Eric Chen."

Well my dojo doesn't have one, but I'd include the basics pertaining to dojo ettiquette as well as how to tie your belt and all of the little things like that.

Shuto is also effective as a strike ot the jaw. In fact when you do the bunkai fo Heian Shodan and Heian Nidan, etc. you notice that on the second shuto you're striking in the collar bone or neck region depending upon the height of the attacker.

Is this what you're referring to? http://www.kyokushin.ca/kyokushin/kawashi.html

What Do You Feel Is The Most Important Aspect In Karate?
cathal replied to Killer Miller's topic in Karate
Along with the natural instinct to not get yourself hurt or to hurt others, determination and commitment. -
That is hilarious!

My dojo is pretty straightforward. If you show a genuine interest in the class and you don't just want to learn to fight, then you can join.

Anyone know this website? Is is a good place to order from? Thanks
