They say it because they are ignorant. It is sometimes better to dodge an attack, sometimes it is not an option, for instance if you are backed into a corner. Blocks are useful if you dont have time or room to dodge. They are also helpful if you want to block and throw, block and counterattack. What people say and what people mean are often two very different things. What they say: Blocking is useless on the street What they mean: I'm much too slow to block even the simplest attack from an untrained fighter. COME ON Everyone knows street fighters 1. Get Mad 2. Throw the Wild Right Cross 3. Throw The left hook, right cross 4. If that doesn't work they go for the tackle If you know whats coming, then you should prepare to defend against it.

Multiple attackers
Ozaru replied to humblecanadiangojuguy's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Not that I know enough about other arts to speak gospel on this subject. But I do know that Tae Kwon Do is a good way to deal with multiple attackers. It's almost beautiful to watch a (good) Black belt fend off 3 or 4 attackers with lightning fast kicks and punches. This isnt to say stand there are try to fight 3 or 4 guys but maybe you could hold your own until they decide not to mess with you and run. Or you can take out one or two quickly and focus on the remaining attackers. I would also say Aikido would be the best for that situation -
Cross it was your choice to quote an ignorant publication.

Rap music is great, but you must understand like anything else it is much more than what you see on the surface. Yeah mainstream (MTV, radio) likes to play the music that appeals to the lowest common denominatior. That is why you have nursery school rhymes about I got money, I got this, I got a mansion. For me, a true fan of the ART it is an embarassment to see this become mainstream and also what the public regards as Rap music(as a whole) There are very positive rappers, intelligent rappers, and those that do good thing for the community. It hurts a little to hear ALL rap music is violent, or causes kids to ...whatever. I'll admit to some rap being influential to (Already) Criminal minded people. But for those that think rap and those who listen to it are morally irreprehensible, I urge you, no I dare you to listen to these artists and come back here with the same opinion. I've seen that chimp on TV, he has a good jump back spinning heel kick. But everything else is just basic mimicry, or tricks stimulated by command. Although the chimp is intelligent enough to "perform" these techs, giving him a Black Belt brings a touch of shame to the art. It basically says that this is simple enough for a "monkey" to do, and it is not. However the general public (IQ < 90) will take this as fact and further discredit our respective Arts(Styles).

Its an amazing feat that, nobody requires sano to wear a football helmet at all times.

A Definite Definition A teacher decides that she is going to teach her second grade class a new word today. She tells them that the word is "definitely" and its meaning is "absolute, positive, without a doubt." She asks the class if anyone can think of a sentence with the word in it. She calls on little Susan who is in the back raising her hand, quite sure of herself. Susan stands up and says, "The sky is definitely blue." The teacher replies to her, "Well, that's a good sentence but sometimes the sky is gray, and sometimes its cloudy, and sometimes its red and pink so the sky is not definitely blue. Anyone else?" Tom's hand flies up and she calls on him. Tom answers, "The water is definitely clear." "Well, Tom that's a good sentence but sometimes the water is muddy, and sometimes it's green, and sometimes it's full of seaweed so it's not definitely clear. Anyone else?" Finally, in the far corner, little Robert slowly raises his hand. "Yes, Robert?" asks the teacher. "Can I ask a question, teacher?" Robert replies. "Yes." "Do farts have lumps?" "No. Why do you ask." "Well, then I've definitely pooped in my pants."

Matrix Poll
Ozaru replied to stl_karateka's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
The one redeeming factor with revolutions was that the final fight resembled DBZ so much, that now I know they can make a live action DBZ (Trilogy). -
Matrix Revolutions
Ozaru replied to kchenault's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
I would have liked Revolutions to have taken place more inside the matrix.. some cloak and dagger going on & fighting agents. Maybe Seraph and Neo could have fought side by side against the twins? Maybe Morpheous could have taken out Smith or at least got in one good fight. To say I was disappointed is like saying a Great White plays too rough. -
Matrix Poll
Ozaru replied to stl_karateka's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
The plot wasn't as good for Reloaded as it was for the original. But the fight scenes in Reloaded were longer and more intense. Revolutions was more like Star Wars or something. And the Neo vs. Smith final fight was ehhh. -
Uh.... yes there are "secrets" to training. What good does it do to simply practice punching when you dont know if you are doing it correctly. You'd simply be reinforcing bad techniques. Also all Martial Arts can be "effective" if applied correctly.

The flexibility you gain from MA will help with everything. Also you learn to have a strong perserverence, which means you will keep going when others give in. It may not be on topic but I've found that the reverse is true also your other sports can help you with Martial Arts. Take a look at those people who begin MA with no athletic background and see how differently they move. They are very stiff and machine like, and run out of gas very quickly. I've found that my background in football has conditioned me to withstand hits(pain) a lot better than most. Also basketball has given me a jumping and overall coordination advantage over most. Stay active as much as possible and you should be successful in all these things.

My only problem is how are they gonna compare DX's forms (Wushu), with Karate style forms. It's almost apples and oranges. Actually 20 apples competing against one orange, I wonder why he stands out? Dont get me wrong, he's darn good, but why is he in the competition?

Is it any surprise? Even though he's only trained for six months in MT he is still a VERY experienced martial artists. He was better as a small child than some adults are now. -
Master and Grandmaster titles?
Ozaru replied to Sho-ju's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I feel sorry for anyone caught falsely claiming to be a master. -
Between matches pick another opponent and then stand in your fighting stance and dont move.
