KSWDanMan replied to taiji fajin's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I know the rumor is true, Sims did leave. Although I'm not sure why. In my opinion it's sad though. He was awesome to watch demo, and from what I hear one of the best to train under. -
I'm still here, just been way busy at the homestead and the dojang.. Lets get the KSW posts rolling again!!
-
we do about the same, we work our techniques for about 30min. Lately it's been a lot of technique. Along with what KSN Doug stated, usually 1 night a week. But lately its been working into form(Hyung) nights towards the end of class

KSW BB testing this week
KSWDanMan replied to krzychicano's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Sorry krzy... But it only gets better. Aside from all those push ups, I left out all the low and slow Hyung we did, along with combo kicks etc... 2 hours of physical testing .. Wheeew ..But all in all, once you get through it, it really is like a big accompishment. Well, it is for me anyway.. I don't personally know Sa Bum Nym Mike, but I have meet him at BB testing, and I think he would be a great instructor. Plus the way he runs the tests, you can just tell, that he knows his stuff. I did forget to mention on our last test, he made all the Bblack Belts 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th... do the push ups with us.. That was a site to see. -
KSW BB testing this week
KSWDanMan replied to krzychicano's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
My last 2 tests have been lead by Sa Bum Nym Mike from meyerland.. I can't even remember how many push ups we did last test.. I seem to remember half way through we were already at 100..BUT... I do remember by that time, I had to go to my knees for them. -
we also do stance training all the time at our dojang, and horse stance is a primary one. The idea we are taught, is that if your horse stance is strong, and you train in low stances all the time, then when you ascend to your fighting stance, your legs will be even stronger. I doubt on the street, you will drop down into a horse stance to take on an attacker. So from our standpoint it is a training method.

Difference in Korea and The US
KSWDanMan replied to Carnage's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I've just always heard that, when they train, they don't really question the instructors, like people here in the States. But then again, this is only hear say, I have never been fortunate enough to go train in Korea.. Would love to though! -
lower back exercises
KSWDanMan replied to KwicKixJ1's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
agreed with JaseP, Slow the kicks down, even if you have to use something to balance with, until you gain that strength.. 1 excercise we do all the time, is what we call rolling back... So sit on your but straight up, pull feet in flat so knees are up, then arms out to your side fingers spread, roll back slowly, and pull your legs all the way over your head, and try and touch the toes to the ground.. great stretch. -

Kuk Sool Won Practice Schedule
KSWDanMan replied to taiji fajin's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Good question Tanjin, I guess when we talk about mediation, we don't really hit on the energy aspect, or at least I don't(probably should). We normally just talk about clearing your mind and foucs on the task you are about to start. I guess you could say we are using our internal energy to prepare our minds. I'll have to think about this one... -

Kuk Sool Won Practice Schedule
KSWDanMan replied to taiji fajin's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
we do the same for sparring. Sparring classes are usually 2 nights of the week, and we also don't practice the point method, until tournament time gets closer. We'll go 1-1.5 minute rounds, break and switch partners. Not so often do we do multiple opponents, but we probably should do more of that . -

Kuk Sool Won Practice Schedule
KSWDanMan replied to taiji fajin's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I really like the meditation aspect of it.. My problem is I'm not real flexible in certain ways, in in position 5(I think) where you sit cross legged(indian style).. Thats painful for me to hold that and sit upright. Sounds funny, I know.. but for the life of me I don't know why.. Anyway, I still give it my all. -
ATA VS. WTF VS. ITF
KSWDanMan replied to mcaselogic's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I'm not part of ATA, ITF, or WTF.. But, If you like movement, kicks, etc in your forms, then maybe you should try Kuk Sool. In the 1st form(Hyung) you have front kicks, back kick, inside kicks, and jump inside kicks.. Lots of circular motions, etc... It's still a Korean style martial art, and they do a ton of TKD type things. Kicks, punches etc... again I don't know about these styles or organizations, and I agree you shouldn't progress through the ranks in a year or so(thats crazy), but you should compete against yourself and push yourself to be your best, and not worry about the other individuals who get a belt just to say they have it. -

Kuk Sool Won Practice Schedule
KSWDanMan replied to taiji fajin's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Thats to funny KSN Doug... Actually last night we were working some technique, the bowing set... the name slips me right now.. it was #3 and I put my knee in the small of there back pulled back on there head, and then wrapped my legs around them for a scissor.. well Sa Bum Nym saw me, and I had crossed my ankles. So he said do you know why you shouldn't cross your ankles(legs).. of course I said no sir, can you show me. I then put the hold on him, SBN then crossed his legs around my ankles somehow and then leaned back on me. it felt like my ankle was literally being pulled from it's socket... Anyway, I understand where your coming from. KUK SOOL! -
Kuk Sool Won Practice Schedule
KSWDanMan replied to taiji fajin's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
we practice in School the "concentration" way. We move thorough the meditation positions, reviewing all of our techniques and forms. However, I do think the quieting method would be effictive.. Just to relax your mind, and clear it so you can be focused.. I would do this after warm up but before Hyung, soo ki or Cha ki. That way you could be extremely focused on your task at hand. -
Why I Quit Tae Kwon Do
KSWDanMan replied to Zorba's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
my 2 cents... A black Belt is a White belt that never quit... And I agree with VinniDaChin... "Once you reach Black belt you are now a true Martial Arts Student". Now the real training begins, you know all the basics, material up to this point, and there is so much more to learn. Stay focused, and true... -

Switching from Hapkido to something else
KSWDanMan replied to traz's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I'm not familiar with that area, but I do know there are some Kuk Sool Won schools in canada. Don't know if there close to where you will be, but since hapkido is a Korean art, you skills would transfer over quickly to KSW. I know some people who have made the switch, and it wasn't difficult for them. Anyway, best of luck.. not sure which one I would pick out of those.. probably if I ahd to choose, I would agree with you and move to the Shorinji Kan Jiu Jitsu.. here is our main web site https://www.kuksoolwon.com.. Best of luck. -
Wrist locks and joint locks:
KSWDanMan replied to The Bear's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
we've done some scenario training... I mean you know whats going to happen but you move a little quicker, and I would have to say, som of the 1stDahns executed some locks on myself, be it an armbar, typical lock, or like a chicken wing.. and there was nothing I wanted more than for them to let go.. I agre with everyone else, train, train, train, train... until it's a second nature. -
