True History of Martial Arts
Sasori_Te replied to foreveryoung001's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I find it a bit disturbing that you don't seem to know the true history of you rown art. However, you are far from being alone in that respect. From the research that I have done I have found the following to be generally held true. 1) All Eastern martial arts have indigienous qualities. That is to say that they have unique qualities that stem from the various cultures that gave rise to them. 2) That being said, most Eastern martial arts seem to have been influenced greatly by trade with China. The Chinese arts came to the various countries along with trade goods, diplomatic envoys and religious figures (even though Bhuddists are supposed to be pacifists). 3)The Chinese arts were influenced by the Indian martial arts and Yogic practices during the spread of Bhuddism from India to China thousands of years ago. These are extremely general statements. The history of your own art is influenced by this description to some extent, but how much so I could not say. -
Whose contributions are greater--West or East?
Sasori_Te replied to Cross_Trainer's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
First of all, I believe that you are making some incorrect assumptions, but I'll get to that in a moment. I believe that the East still has the greatest influence on martial arts as we are discussing them here in this forum. Now to what I said earlier: 1) The Chinese were very clinical and as scientific as the technology allowed them to be in the development of the martial arts as early as 1000 years ago. The Chinese five element theory and the meridian and acupoint theories will back up my argument here. 2) The Okinawans as well as the Chinese realized that the better shape you were in the better chance you had of successfully defending yourself. They had devices that were used for weight training and endurance training hundreds of years ago. Look up hojo undo on the internet to see what I'm talking about. 3) Every culture has some form of boxing, wrestling and foot fighting in varying degrees. Do some research and you will see this to be true. -
Sorry. Double post.

Hello and welcome. Good luck. This is a great place for information.

Hello Tony. Welcome to the forums. There are a lot of knowledgeable folks around here to ask questions of and gain new insights.

I think you are correct in your thinking. Once upon a time in Arizona, I would work with my students once a week in normal "street" clothes. We would practice outside under lower light conditions in the parking lot. I don't think you could ever cover every scenario but you have to be able to function outside the dojo when you're not wearing a gi.

I found this website. I wanted to post it and see if anyone had ever seen or heard of this style or it's Grandmaster before. It looks like just another amalgamation to me. Take a look and tell me what you think. http://www.ironcrane.com/index.html

Murihei Ueshiba..and his art

As far as I can read, you didn't make any comparisons at all. You mades some chained together statements about one man. In order to make a comparison you have to have 2 or more things being compared. -
wich 1 is for me
Sasori_Te replied to benbarden's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
I was 20 when I started. I'm 34 now. It's never too late. I'm looking for a new art to practice as well since my old art is not in the area. However, the more I look I may just find a few interested folks and teach them the art I already know. I like it and don't really want to change.Anyway, I say go for it. If you decide you don't like the art that you decide to study for some reason when you're 30 then change it. You're never too old to start martial arts. I would suggest that if you are extremely out of shape that you go to your doctor to get a green light. Age is one thing a heart attack is another. Good luck. -
learning multiple forms at once

What do you mean by "they have no idea which one to complete?" When exactly do you complete a martial art? -
Sorry, looking back I think I misinterpreted Master Jules statement. You were referring directly to the original post. If this is the case case, then please disregard my last post. White Warlock you have received your belts by the most traditional method of all. You showed your skill and earned the respect of your instructors.

Being handed a belt does not neccessarily mean that you have been quick promoted. If you are a competent instructor you will know the level of the students you teach. I've handed out belts (albeit not black belts) to students in this manner before. I had several reasons for doing so. I personally believe that a test should only be a formality. The student should earn the rank long before the test.

WW is right. Spitting on someone can beconstrued as assault with a deadly weapon. If you are sick, say with hepatitis or HIV you can be charged with attempted murder. It's weird but true.
