White Eybrow Kung Fu
KwicKixJ1 replied to daeinwolf's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
man, sounds cool. there are so many kung fu styles out there. too bad there's not some kinda tournament where you can see really really awesome kung fu masters duke it out and show off what each style is known for. that would be so neat to see. cuz with my sifu... he'll do stuff... but not much. he walks around, gives each pair a drill to do... and sometimes demonstrates. but when he does... its like, all you see are sleeves... super stuff. it'd be awesome to see grand kung fu masters show their skills. and with forbidden arts... whats crazy is that, when you think about it, there's only so much a body can do. there's only certain movements your arms and legs will allow, and to make a style forbidden... must be some pretty awesome stuff. so hard to pick which style to study... i guess now-a-days your location and luck play the biggest role in what kung fu style you'll practice. i do Chi Xing Tong Long in the Wong Hun Fun tradition. its pretty great... and 45 minutes from where i live. -

i think people that are into "pro fighting" lost what martial arts are about. they were intended for defence, against soldiers etc. going around challenging people, and claiming you're the best is childish. but you guys can't forget... that cage fighters and full contact fighters aren't martial artists any more than NBA players or NHL players. they're there for entertainment value. to beat the crap out of eachother, not study energy, mind and body harmony, etc. my sifu once said "i'll bet you 100 dollars, that i can train ANYONE to be a decent street fighter in under a year... but you have to keep in mind that it still takes about five years to reach black belt" UFC fights and Pride fights are a bunch of nonsense. i think K1 is kinda cool, but when you have a sport where every fight looks the same and every participant trains for the same thing (ground fighting) you don't have a sport... you have a new form of dog fighting. -
chakra-ki-etc
KwicKixJ1 replied to Calcifer's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
hey, speaking of chakra. where's that term from? i was watching an anime with ninjas and they were talking about chakra a lot. but a friend said that "chakra" was a chinese thing... i'm aware of chakra concepts. did some reading in my spare time, but i couldn't figure out where the term came from. if anyone could write back that would be great. -

Seven Star Mantis Kung Fu
KwicKixJ1 replied to Icetuete's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
umm... with seven star praying mantis. (and i'm pretty sure its praying, and not preying) umm... not quite sure about the story (like names i don't know) but there were two brothers that were kung fu practitioners. back then they did a different style. one brother always beat the other. well one day, the brother that always one went on a trip, and while he was away, the other practiced his kung fu. during practice, he saw two insects fighting. a cicada, and a mantis. the mantis substantially smaller than the cicada, the kung fu guy thought "the smaller one will definitly lose". well... turns out that the mantis literally tore the cicada up by tearing away at its legs and antennae while defending. an offensive defense... so the kung fu dude separated the two, let the cicada go, and took the mantis into his care. he poked at it with a piece of straw and studied its movements, and incorporated them into his kung fu. well, the other brother came back... and they sparred, and the mantis brother easily dominated the fight. so the two studied mantis together, and decided that they want to spread their style to everyone who could see the seven star constillation. (hence seven star praying mantis) umm... i bet a lot of you skipped that story and decided not to read. but yeah, that's my input. mantis is fun. our sashes are handled differently tho. we go from dark to lighter (signifying purity). black first, then blue, then red, then yellow, then white i think... but red sash is about as far as you can go. takes a long time. kung fu really doesn't matter what sash you wear. its more of a family atmosphere. and you only wear your sash to test. anyways. take care. -
Grasshopper kung fu?
KwicKixJ1 replied to Breakdancer's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
dude... grasshopper kung fu? do you even know why the chinese got the names for the animal/insect styles? they trained, and saw an insect do something, and they found that it would work... now... before signing the contract, did you even bother thinking "what can a grasshopper really do..." i mean... mantis... with the claws... and the gripping... tiger, with the ferocityand the power... dragon with the wisdom and the strength... panther... with the whatever panthers do... you gotta be kidding me... grasshopper style? i seriously can't believe i made it through to page four of this thread. grasshopper kung fu... wow... its amazing what people will believe now-a-days... and i can't believe you agreed to spend 720 dollars on "grasshopper kung fu". grasshopper kung fu... i mean, listen to the name for crying out loud. friend. contract or no contract... stop taking lessons with this loser before you develop some seriously hard to break habits. like squating down on the ground exposing your groin while sparring... -
Most effective Kung Fu
KwicKixJ1 replied to sansoouser's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
i do mantis. its fun. sifu says that against someone who's well versed in wing chun, someone well versed in mantis would only lose if they were fighting in a phone booth. i did tae kwon do, and kenpo aswell. but i'm not into martial arts for self defense. i do it cuz its fun and its something i feel comfortable doing. kinda like my niche i guess. i think thinking about how effective a style of kung fu is kind've an obsolete question, cuz how often do you go out and get mugged? and how often (out of those few that occur) does the attacker come at you like in the chop socky flicks and says "hey! gimmi your money!" as he puts his hand on your shoulder and you two get into a kung fu battle of styles. i think whatever works for the individual is what works best. just like japanese styles. if you're tall and slender, you'll have fun with tae kwon do kicking. if you're short, strong and stocky... maybe a hard style like karate would suit you. actually... i dont really know what i'm talking about. ignore me. but i do do mantis. and it is fun. -

Most effective Kung Fu
KwicKixJ1 replied to sansoouser's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
i thing wing chun is good. cuz no matter what... eventually you're going to end up in close in combat. there's only so much you can do in kicking distance. most of the fight can happen within punching distance. -
if you're in the dallas/fort worth area. write me a message... always fun talking to locals.

Article on Bruce Lee's strength and fitness
KwicKixJ1 replied to Sorynn's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
bruce lee had one leg that was shorter than the other. people seem to forget about that a lot. he had handicaps. he worked with what he had. i don't really think he was THE GREATEST. but i do think he had the biggest influence in making martial arts more popular. that guy was a maniac tho. i wish i could be that dedicated to my training. stinks tho that i have school and money to worry about. i need me a rich girl... so i can be in awesome shape. -
a lot of people can kick three times in the air. have you seen the korean tigers? i saw one of them perform a triple scissor kick followed by a side kick. all in the air, adding up to SEVEN boards broken, that's SEVEN kicks. dude was awesome.

LOL i haven't stopped laughing this whole post. you guys are great. lol... so fast it didn't cast a shadow. ahahahahaha. sorry. go watch iron monkey. part one. great movie. and picturing that one guy's discription of what would happen... with like an entire room catching fire cuz of the insane speed. lol. that's almost as funny as pulling out a guitar, a fair lady, a crane, etc. for a tai chi lesson. i'm glad you people on this message board have a good sense of humor.

Measuring kicking power
KwicKixJ1 replied to exkarategirl's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
lol. that's funny. i think century has an attachment to one of those shield pads (y'know, those rectangles you hold on your side... kinda looks like a rectangle squishy shield?) there's an attachment for the hole on top to measure how much air gets pushed out of it and you can calculate a poundage offa that. -

lol. that's so sad. i heard a rumor back in 1999 that dux was coming to my martial arts academy in redondo beach california, but he never showed up. it was supposed to be like a seminar type thing and a bunch of kids showed up. and i filled in and had a movie night at the academy instead. ...blood sport was not viewed.
