  1. which brand? which model? why? and no they're not all the same.
  2. NOBODY IS TOO OLD TO STUDY MARTIAL ARTS. there was a lady at my old school that got her black belt at 80 something. wouldn't have guessed her a day over 45.
  3. led zepplyn, grateful dead, old school rock man. that's where it's at.
  4. i have photos of the guys i face in competition. keep the guy in mind that always beats you. i don't let it discourage me, instead, i work harder knowing that next time i face him i'd have worked harder than he did.
  5. workout your lower abs and lower back. do slow leg raises to the side too.
  6. there are no drawbacks to martial arts. if there were outlined drawbacks to a style, no one would do it.
  7. the hammer fist hand, i keep my arm slightly bent. like you're coming down on someone's nose. you get into that ready stance (standing sideways and your feet are together? i hope that's what you're talking about) to demonstrate readiness to execute your sidekick. i think. it's a focus motion. like slow blocks.
  8. wall sits, wall sits, wall sits. slow kicks (go to load position, and extend and hold it... forever.) slow leg raises (do a side kick onto a counter. keep your leg there, then raise it slowly. you'll only be able to pick it up like... half and inch, but it'll hurt like hell and it'll do wonders for your kicks.) leg abductor and adductor machines. (2-3 times a week.) lotta situps, it'll speed up your kicks. and do the roman chair a lot.
  9. tkd is fun! that's a great reason to study martial arts!
  10. hi guys. haven't posted in forever. well... i'm glad to say that after dabbling in grappling, praying mantis kung fu, open style, and traditional taekwondo... i'm now officially back training strictly olympic style tkd. at first i cross trained so that i could answer stupid questions like "well... what are you gonna do if someone shoots for your legs? taekwondo won't help you then?" or "you don't know how to use your hands, you do taekwondo" got sick of it. so i trained other systems. but... i couldn't stay away anymore. regardless of what works and what doesn't on the street, i enjoy myself the most doing this style. i just hope i can still get back into the shape i was back in the day. thanks for listening. you guys rock.
  11. i wish they would put urquidez dvd's up for sale on the net.
  12. wha? who? where? why you jealous? what's the correct spelling of the guy?
  13. that's so weird, i was thinking of switching to muay thai myself.
  14. where do u find programs to spend a summer training in korea? i'm a university student. and i've always wanted to train in korea for a bit.
  15. xma shouldn't be associated with korean arts. or martial arts even
  16. hi guys, was wondering what you guys did to strengthen your lower backs. in taekwondo, multiple kicks with alternating legs is pretty common, and i was wondering what you guys did to strengthen your lower back to prevent injury during such kicking combinations. because the twisting during r, roundhouse l,roundhouse r,roundhouse l,roundhouse r,roundhouse is definitly a combination that requires a lot of lower back strength. and momentum of course. but i think lower back strength more. in my opinion. anyways, any pointers or tips would be greatly appreciated.
  17. thanks for being constructive. its rare in message boards these days. i didn't know itf had legal sweeps. like, boot checks? or real take down sweeps? Y so many kicks then if sweeps r legal?
  18. not those kinds of supplements. but thanks, i'll look into it. i meant supplemental training methods that helped along with developing strong legs capable of taking a lot of abuse.
  19. of course time, but what kinda supplemental training (do u think) will give u an edge
  20. wasn't talking about the rules. was talking about how they were fighting. almost as if they were scared to make any contact. and... machine gun kicks. dunno, looked too light and care free in my opinion. just like naska.
  21. y'know what, i'm so glad you posted this. i've lost motivation a long time ago. i tried other martial arts, i tried lifting weights, i tried taking a break, thought about competing... thought too long. now i feel old. i'm interested in getting back into martial arts hardcore and testing for more belts. i think what helped me keep my motivation (or gain it back) was to get together with people that had that fire going. it's REALLY contagious. make some new friends at school that you know are just starting out, befriend a white belt... coach them through the beginnings... i know i remembered how much i loved martial after hearing about how a friend recently tested for his first dan. so, that's where i'm at now. getting back into shape. hahaha
  22. not that naska fights are a bad thing. or sport karate fights for that matter. they're fun to watch, just not like traditional taekwondo. not aggressive and crazy enough.
  23. looked just like another sport karate match to me. i like wtf fighting better. that's my opinion. lots may disagree, but looked like a naska fight.
  24. in traditional TKD training it takes at least 5 years to get to black belt. i think the TUITION fees for some schools are ridiculously high... and... every school has those... wait... what was the main topic of discussion again? lost my train of thought. oh yeah... some people open schools just to be able to promote people to black belt in a year to make the money off of the belt certificate tests. i've seen TKD schools that promote to black belt in a year. i made sure to let the head instructor know how i felt (politely) that it was unfair to students to view themselves as equals to people who spend YEARS actually TRYING to achieve a black belt. nothing really happened, and i continued my search for a good place to train. but yeah... McDojangs are annoying. they train people to be sloppy and not caring as long as they reach the next belt. i think that's sad. if you're not good enough, you shouldn't qualify for yellow belt even.
