  1. According to Yahoo, release date is today, 12/20, in the US.
  2. If anyone is interested... According to the guide on my cable system, the Capoeira episode of The Deadly Arts is airing tonight (2/16) on FitTV. Its on at 7pm and 10pm here in CA, but of coure check your own guide if you are interested.
  3. FitTV has a series called "The Deadly Arts" that airs on Thursday nights. Its one hour long and each show is about a different art. About a month ago, they did the show on Capoeira. It certainly appears that it can be used effectively for self-defense, though they also train in other aspects that do not directly correlate to self defense. I suppose as is usually the case, how effective it is depends on the student and their teacher.
  4. Ah, ok. Like I said, just curious. Thanks...
  5. KSN Doug, my instructor, KJN Saidi just came back from some training in Texas. I haven't had a chance to ask him about it yet, but just curious if you happened to be involved in the same training, or perhaps met him?
  6. Yup, good luck and hang in there. I'm sure you'll be glad you did.
  7. Let's see... other than MA's/working out: Spending time with my family. Golf, bowling, and softball. Watching movies, football and baseball. Eating. I'm a big Disney fan (moreso of their past work than the current). I try to read books with some regularity.
  8. Not as old as I feel sometimes the morning after a killer workout, but yeah.
  9. I've only got my 1st black stripe and only know as far as Dae Geup Hyung. But what you are saying makes sense.
  10. Honestly, I picked Denver and Seattle, but I was pulling for Pittsburgh and Carolina. If Foster and Peppers had been healthy, I probably would have said Carolina. For the Super Bowl? I've got to go with Pittsburgh. The only thing that really concerns me is Cowher's conservative play-calling at times. I think he goes into a shell too early, and against a team like Seattle, that could burn him. That said, I still think the Steelers take it.
  11. Hmmm.... Jet Li stars in Shaolin Muppets. Jet Li in Snow Dogs 2: Poop Patrol. Jet Li in ET 2: ET's Revenge. I don't know....
  12. Age is a factor... the older you are, the longer it takes for the skin to "bounce back". My understanding is that with a loss like you are describing, it should bounce back, but I'm not sure about the time.
  13. Those are the ones I usually get. But then again, usually, the only people who find out I study MAs are already friends/acquaintances/coworkers. If I don't know somebody reasonably well, or at least don't trust that they aren't looking for trouble, I don't even think about mentioning it.
  14. Again, its your choice. 99.99% of the time at least. If you really do find yourself in places where people are attacking you without provocation, you should be asking yourself why you can't find something else to do with your time. One thing that sometimes happens is we lose perspective. We hang around people that are quick to fight, for example, or like to go to places where trouble lurks. Since we see it all of the time, we think its "normal". The reality is, most people don't fight, or even come close to getting in fights. You can do the same, but again, if and only if you make the choice.
  15. We occasionally practice picking up a staff while doing forward rolls. I'm trying to picture doing it with a cartwheel, and it seems like the length of the staff would make it problematic. Maybe if you pick it up at the "far" end? Something shorter might work well also.
  16. I'm not a "wood expert". It might not be balsa wood. I just know its signifigantly less dense than the pine boards. And yes, if the child hits the board with any kind of power, it breaks. If they miss, or just "push" on it, it doesn't. (They only use kicks and palm strikes until BB)
  17. I'll just say that I hope you've altered your training style. Losing one eye limits your peripheral vision and depth perception. Lose the other one and your vision will be much more "limited".
  18. Yeah, I just saw Enter the Dragon on cable Saturday night, and I thought, "Wow, he was really young!".
  19. Washing it can make it look pretty worn as well. I've seen a few who did this (not BB) just because they didn't know any better.
  20. I agree with the others who say your Sensei was not dishonored in the first place. The guy dishonored himself by either lying, or bragging.
  21. I agree, its not realistic to expect to wipe out every negative urge. But it is very realistic for any individual to control those urges. The key is personal responsibility. The reason some fight unnecessarily is not that they have an ego, or whatever. Everybody has that and not everybody find it necessary to fight over it. No, the reason some fight unnecessarily is because they choose not to control their ego, or whatever inner urge they have that is encouraging them to fight. So in a way, I agree with you. Its not realistic to expect that everyone will make the right choices. There's just too many people out there for that to happen. But, for any given individual, the choice is their's. Until they realize and accept that, they will continue to make the wrong choices and blame others, or simply say its uncontrollable.
  22. Makes sense, thanks. Good luck in "finding your mood"!
  23. If I understood you right, you're thinking of starting your own school/academy, then franchising it later. That makes sense, unless you already have a ton of cash to invest, or a popular name that somebody will pay to be associated with. If you're in it for the passion, then I think you have a better chance of success than if you were primarily looking for money/fame. Now, I don't have any direct experience with starting a school, but its in the back of my mind to consider later, when I think I might be ready to do something like that. My thoughts are to start small and build a "following" of some kind. Rent a small storefront or perhaps some time at a local rec center and teach out of there. You could also try teaching through your local college's adult education programs. Once you've picked up a few students, then it might be time to look into a full-fledged studio, and build from there. Of course, if you have the cash to get through the early times, you could try opening up a full studio right away, but I'd think that's more risky, and you're going to have to be willing and able to lose some money for awhile. It would probably also help, if possible, to work with your current instructor. Assuming you aren't opening a studio right next to his of course. He might be able to help you get some students. People who might be interested but are closer to your location than his (and of course you would do the same for him...). Maybe he could do some demos and seminars at your studio, or in your area to help promote your school, giving you some credibility. It seems to me that word of mouth is very important for MA schools, so anything that will help in this area, like the support of your instructor, would help. I don't know, just some random thoughts. Good luck.
  24. Just wondering if anybody knows what's going on with the KSW California tournament this year. The World KSW website says its in September and in Sacramento. It gives no specific date and says the schedule is subject to change. My instructor says he is confident it will be in September, but believes it will be in San Francisco again. Its been in SF and in March the last couple of years, so I'm just curious about what might have brought about the change, and if there's any hint as to what the date will be (want to keep it open...). Thanks in advance.
  25. A little more info. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jailhouse_rock So the "art", or perhaps more accurately, fighting system, might be legit. But as elbows and knees said, who knows if this guy is legit. As always, I'd be wary of anybody who claims they can teach you a martial art with some tapes.
