  1. that video was very interesting, can you explain what you think happened in it... it looked to me like the master stopped his breathing or something. any idea what really happened there?
  2. Now that ive been skulking in the shadows for a month its time for me to introduce myself. My name is Eric, and im an aspiring martial artist from Hartford Ct. I currently study Tae Kwon Doe, and have recently began studying Kung Fu. My intrests are martial arts obviously, and Martial History. Im also in college studying to become a teacher! Well Hi to everybody here, this board is awesome!!!
  3. well first i would bring this question up with your instructor. Beyond that, Forms in kung fu arent exactly the most useful in a fight, unless you really understand each move, and what it is supposed to be used for. Most sparring uses the basics becuase they are easy to implement. Dont fear, both complex forms, and basic sparring techniques are good for you to learn... However if you really want to be able to use the complex kung fu form movements in combat(which is possible) then your going to have to really break them down and figure out what each move is used for.
  4. Ok, so your looking for a martial art. Id give you a quick answer and tell you to take whatever i take... but youve gotten plenty of that already from visiting schools, so here ill try to help make you more informed. If your interested in the philosophical aspect of martial arts then Aikido is great. But all martial arts will give you some sort of philosophical advancement. Other biggies would be Kung Fu or Quigong. On to the more butt kicking part: The most widespread forms of martial arts in the USA are Karate, Tae Kwon Doe, and more recently Kickboxing. I personally take Tae Kwon Doe, but all of these are a great arts to study. They will give you a well rounded disipline of forms(training patterns), sparring(real combat training), and self defense(all the throws and holds). These arts are great because they are easy to start, and have tons of potential. However you have to be careful because in the USA some schools have in my opinion become rather soft, and no longer teach a useful MARTIAL art. I would personally avoid schools that have anyone under the age of 13 with a blackbelt. The other martial art that i study is Kung Fu. Which is a great Martial art if your looking for more Form training and less sparring and self defense. Plus in Kung Fu you will be given the opportunity to study many of the weapons in the martial arts world(Staff, Sword, Chain). I hope this helps a bit, if you want more info on any particular Martial Art im sure someone can give you a very detailed explanation. Its great that your doing research before you join though!! And welcome to the KarateForums!!!!
  5. IM looking into purchasing a pair of Sais, and they come in many different lengths, and also in either octogonal or round. So how do i decide what length to get, and what do you think is better, round or octogonal??? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!!
  6. Thanks a bunch, where should i look to find my local laws on this?
  7. Hey all, Im pretty new here, but i didnt see this answered here. I wanted to know what laws there are concering the ownership/transportation of deadly martial arts weapons? Im gonna start taking Kung Fu soon, and will end up wanting to transport whatever weapons im learning to and from school. Any info or links would be great!
  8. Well Bruce Lee had the idea that every martial artist should have their own style, and not follow the strictures of any one style. If you have ever used something not from the style that you study, then technically it is your own. But personaly i have not published anything, and probably never will...but hey you never know...
  9. Jet Li is real, he was the chinese provincial champion for i think 2 years, though it ocould have been more.
